So either the shooter screwed up and hit detainees instead, or they're covering up the attack and painting it as a "anti-ice" attack instead? Extremely confusing

I don't understand why the shooter would target the prisoners if they were "anti ice". Unless they really were a terrible shot. It just doesn't make sense

my personal take on this is, its some rightwinger trying to get the troubles to pop off. we saw it with kirk, a rightwinger shot a rightwinger and the right was calling for the blood of everyone different than them.
a rightwinger shot at trump, whether a set up or not, the right was foaming at the mouth to attack the anyone different.
a rightwinger was found with a gun on his golf trip.... again calls for violence to the non rightwing.
something like 97% of political violence is rightwing. they want a war and we will keep seeing all these crimes getting. blamed on everyone else, until someone fights back or they feel they are losing power.

New statue on National Mall celebrates ‘long-lasting bond’ between Trump and Epstein

A shame - can they make a 3D model available so we can 3d print our own to endure?

Delivery driver foils Texas hostage situation after alerting police to alarming order details

The idea of needing a hatchet delivered to a hostage situation is somewhat mind-bending. Like, if you're in a situation where a hatchet might be necessary, pick one up ahead of time.

A driver for an delivery service recently helped police in west-central Texas foil a hostage situation after reporting that he had delivered zip ties, a hatchet and other suspicious items to a motel room as part of an order, according to authorities and media accounts.

In a news release published on social media, police from the city of Sweetwater said they had been called to a local motel on Monday morning by a delivery service worker who became suspicious over certain items that he delivered to a room there at the behest of a platform customer.

Police did not disclose exactly what the items in question were. But witnesses told Texas media outlets KTAB and KRBC that – among other things – the delivery included trash bags, zip ties, bleach and a hatchet.

Stay classy, fellow Texans.

New Jersey PBS shutting down in July - New Jersey Globe

cross-posted from: beehaw.org/post/22326498

New Jersey PBS is expected to cease operations in July 2026 following WNET’s decision not to renew its agreement, the New Jersey Globe has learned.

The decision comes after the federal government decided to cancel funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funded WNET, the parent company of THIRTEEN, the PBS New York affiliate.

Unless they can find a new non-profit funding source, New Jersey could be left without a public television station next year.

Perhaps, but WPSU also announced closure of their NPR and PBS station a few days ago

That's because you didn't. You were pointing out Trump's hypocrisy and ended up as a test case for overturning the 1st amendment.

Don't forget, Sinclair is still not carrying him because they want to merge with a company (and violate FCC rules about market percentage), and Disney can no longer be trusted to stand up to this administration - if they caved once they can cave again.

Khonshu Blade is an amazing idea, I'm so glad to see it.

Alexi finally got his fight against Captain America, even if it was only a zombie half cap.

I was skeptical on the quality but this has been a blast so far.

New statue on National Mall celebrates ‘long-lasting bond’ between Trump and Epstein

“We celebrate the long-lasting bond between President Donald J. Trump and his ‘closest friend,’ Jeffrey Epstein,” a plaque at the bottom of the spray-painted bronze installation reads. A permit from the National Park Service will allow the statue to stay on the National Mall grounds through 8pm on Sunday.

[…]

Lines from the alleged birthday letter are printed verbatim on the statue’s plaques – one beneath Trump’s feet, one beneath Epstein’s and another on the third honoring “Friendship Month,” that features two outstretched hands forming a heart

My humble philosophy-The Genesis of Justice and Evil: From Desire to Order

What Is Desire
Here, the definition of desire is slightly different from its usual meaning. I regard desire as behavior that goes beyond what the subject actually needs. The rest is only to respond to needs. What counts as “beyond need” is related to the average level of demand. The standard varies according to era and nation, and is also connected with effort.

In the time of primitive humans, desire might only have meant having more food than one could finish. By the industrial age, desire turned toward money and material enjoyment. As we progress, desire expands accordingly. The difference between nations lies in their level of progress. Basically, the degree of progress is proportional to desire.

Montréal’s bike infrastructure hardly takes up any space from cars on city roads

Proposals for new or expanded bike lanes are often met with fierce backlash, in a phenomenon dubbed “bikelash,” with car drivers reluctant to lose any street space.

Yet our study finds that the current imbalance of spatial allocation is so overwhelmingly in favour of cars that it’s possible to make substantial improvements to bike infrastructure without significantly decreasing the space allocated per driver.

After all, a key advantage of bicycles is their incredible space-efficiency. Even if all the bike infrastructure space in the city were to double, the proportion of roadway given to cars would not fall below 90 per cent in any borough.

This is good news, he's good actor, and considering his look I'm sure it's hard to find work. Not a lot of calls for albino actors. But if he's playing Tombstone hopefully that means he'll also get to do a scene with D'Onofrio and the two of them together should me amazing.

Even waymo’s “good” numbers, which probably have been massaged a bit, from cars driving in carefully selected conditions, is nearly 2.5 times the rate of accidents per mile driven of fatal and non-fatal accidents in the US.

The technology isn’t ready yet and shouldn’t be on the roads. If it takes it being on the roads to improve it, then maybe it shouldn’t improve, maybe it should be abandoned and the money being wasted on it should go to extant, proven solutions.

The fact that Amtrak and local public transit authorities are struggling to secure funding to maintain and expand operations while self driving car companies burn cash for decades on nothing burgers drives me crazy.

in reply to megopie

Zero percent chance of improved rail service under this administration.

And at least locally, people find public transit to be for the poor, just spreading the homeless around town. We're supposedly a liberal city, but several projects have been voted down.

I bet it’s even more of a trip in a car
right before an accident and there’s no driver controlling the vehicle.

A Braided River

The Yarlung Zangbo River winds through Tibet as the world’s highest-altitude major river. Parts of it cut through a canyon deeper than 6,000 meters (three times the depth of the Grand Canyon). And other parts, like this section, are braided, with waterways that shift rapidly from season to season. The swift changes in a braided river’s sandbars come from large amounts of sediment eroded from steep mountains upstream. As that sediment sweeps downstream, some will deposit, which narrows channels and can increase their scouring. The river’s shape quickly becomes a complicated battle between sediment, flow speed, and slope. (Image credit: M. Garrison; animation credit: R. Walter; via NASA Earth Observatory)

The knock-on effects are myriad. This is what societal collapse looks like.

Agreed 100%. Trying to not use the words "societal collapse" because we need hope to survive and I think it's enough to just say "things are very bad right now". Saying "society is collapsing" kinda just makes everyone feel bad in an unproductive way. I don't think you are incorrect, I just think this is a way we can use language to help keep our heads straight.

If society is truly collapsing, then there isn't much any of us can do about it except be there for each other. Keep your loved ones close and integrate in your community. We can survive this, and we can enjoy each other's company along the way. We just have to stick together.

in reply to coyotino [he/him]

I was very careful with my wording. X "looks like" != X "is happening." I agree we can't fall into nihilism, but it's no better to downplay the state of things.

Junta Taps Election-Rigging Experts as Monitors; Hunts for Global Photo Ops; and More

The choice of “international observers,” however, seems to lean heavily toward countries that either do not hold elections or have perfected the art of removing all suspense from the outcomes.

The regime has also generously allowed domestic observers to apply, but anyone who dares to declare the election unfree, unfair, or lacking transparency risks up to seven years in prison under the junta’s new election protection law.

Wonder how Erika Kirk feels about continuing her husband's legacy while Trump has co-opted his death to push for further political violence.
