What is the current state of Discourse to threadiverse federation?

I found this article from earlier this year: blog.discourse.org/2025/04/dis…

However, I haven't come across that much content from Discourse platforms over here on Lemmy/Piefed. Is there more work to do with the plugins, or should we work with organizations running Discourse to help them connect with us?

For example, the threadiverse communities for OpenStreetMaps is relatively small, and being able to see / contribute to community.openstreetmap.org would be amazing.

Re: What is the current state of Discourse to threadiverse federation?

The Discourse ActivityPub plugin is developed by a sole developer but I believe it is ready for use. I also believe he is still working on the plugin so that's positive news.

Federation with Discourse forums is tricky, it's been difficult getting NodeBB to work reliably with Discourse.

Are you able to load Discourse categories in Lemmy?

I mean if you're going to criticize a billionaire, there are plenty who aren't doing anything productive with their money...

Scott’s gift to Howard builds on other recent DEI-focused donations. She donated $42 million to 10,000 Degrees, a Bay Area nonprofit focused on expanding college access for low-income and largely non-white students, alongside other eight-figure commitments to Native student scholars and HBCU endowments through the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).

In September, she made a $70 million UNCF donation as part of a campaign to bolster pooled endowments across 37 HBCUs, a strategy designed to increase revenue streams and narrow historical wealth and funding gaps.

in reply to tornavish

This escalated quickly. There are many I wouldn't mourn, but to say someone needs to die right after they donate a crazy amount to a good cause doesn't give the kind of impression I think you're hoping for.
in reply to TehPers

It did not escalate quickly. It escalated very slowly with people simping for billionaires.

A crazy amount of good is only relative to the money that you have. What she has donated is lint in her pocket

in reply to tornavish

Just how much do you think she has? She's given away over a third of her net worth so far - way more than "pocket lint."
in reply to SanctimoniousApe

Show me the numbers, including the interest and additional income from other ventures. Or shut up because you don’t have any of this data.
in reply to tornavish

in reply to tornavish

Do you even know who she is? She's Jeff Bezos' ex-wife. She's been donating billions of dollars since the divorce to hundreds of charities. She didn't become a billionaire by being a bitch like most of the others.

Educating people feeds them and their kids for generations. For fucks sake.
in reply to fakeplastic

Shilling for a billionaire? Hah. What percentage of her fortune do you think that is? What is she waiting for? Death?

Laughable that you, from a commie instance, is standing up for a fucking billionaire. I always knew you guys were fake. What a joke.

in reply to tornavish

Even for the internet, this is stupid.
in reply to tornavish

She's donated something like $20 billion so far. I don't think billionaires should exist, but frankly there are way more deserving targets (such as her former husband) who provide basically no value to society.
This entry was edited (1 week ago)
in reply to arcterus

ALL OF THEM ARE TARGETS ALL OF THE TIME.

The moment you let one off the hook is the moment you let all of them off the hook. Taylor Swift should be strung up next to them too, Regardless.

in reply to tornavish

I like how you went from some snide comment about her not feeding people (which she has donated a bunch of money for, btw) to killing her and now Taylor Swift in particular for whatever reason. Very normal thought process.

Guess she should just hoard her wealth or buy 20 yachts like most other wealthy people since giving away billions is worthless and she should instead wait in the forever stalled line to be hanged or have the govt institute a wealth tax (that was a joke, the US will never institute a wealth tax).

This entry was edited (1 week ago)
in reply to arcterus

Well, when people escalate a simple comment and defend billionaires, I lose patience.
in reply to tornavish

escalate a simple comment

Bruh, you're the one that jumped to murdering them.

I lose patience.

Uh huh. So, are you gonna do anything with your lost patience, or just randomly say we should murder billionaires while actually just sitting around on your computer and hoping someone else will take one for the team or whatever?

in reply to tornavish

Do you even know who she is? She's Jeff Bezos' ex-wife. She's been donating billions of dollars since the divorce to hundreds of charities. She didn't become a billionaire by being a bitch like most of the others.
in reply to SanctimoniousApe

I know who she is and this changes nothing. She still HAS the money, it’s not about how a person gets it. Stop simping for billionaires. I bet you looove Taylor swift.
in reply to tornavish

Stop being a mindless "all or nothing" moron. She didn't fleece people for her money, and she doesn't have to give it away, either. Yet she chose to commit to giving most of it away, and she's trying to make the most positive effect out of it she can by being extremely selective about where she puts it. WTF more would you have her do to satisfy you?

Grow up, and stop being such a hateful ass. It's just another form of blind bigotry, judging people by some singular facet about them rather than considering the whole of who they are.

And, no, I don't care for Swift's music. From what little I do know of her, she seems basically yet another somewhat decent person at heart that's been gradually corrupted by fame, fortune, and the changes to one's life that come with such, but I think she still is a bit off from what I'd consider "evil." I can understand being disappointed in her, but not the level of absolute vitriol you seem to have for her.

in reply to SanctimoniousApe

A person cannot amass a billion dollars and not be evil. And if they somehow come by it accidentally, they can keep what they need and toss the rest.

How much money would YOU need to live a very good life without ever working or worrying again?

I just did some math, and 20mil is my “zero worry” amount. Heck I could probably just live on the interest.

Stop defending evil people, you sound like a fed

in reply to tornavish

And you sound like a very broken individual. Seek help, really.
in reply to tornavish

I'm defending her actions because I would hope I'd be even half as smart as she is. She's grown her initial $36B from the divorce, so now she has that much more she can help others with. It's a matter of long-term thinking, which you unfortunately seem to lack.

Never mind it's not her responsibility to make up for the shittiness of other billionaires, as I just said in another comment to you elsewhere. Be thankful at least a few of them even try to be decent. You'll never convince anybody that were you in her shoes you would give it all away either - that $20M you calculated looks great now, but just a couple decades ago most would have said just a tenth of that. What will it be in another couple decades?

I'm just pointing this out, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who will....

We have machines to do the laundry and dishes for us already. We just have to set them up (put stuff in them) and they do the job for us.

When was the last time you saw someone get out the washing board?

in reply to MystikIncarnate

That still requires gathering the dirty items together, loading/unloading, keeping track of when it is full/time to run. People saying this mean they want a robot like Rosie from the Jetsons to take care of that sort of housekeeping, not for a machine that makes the task easier to do themself.

in reply to Eyck_of_denesle

If it was the same as with the Hulk it would be an issue of distribution rights, not liking or disliking the character.

She broke up with me, we decided to stay good friends

I had this girlfriend "K". K was always breaking up with me over something or just overall being distant. She, today, told me she's not good at showing affection and is not ready to have a boyfriend. She said she would like to be good friends with me, though. 😀

Not shakshuka

This is your standard Moroccan shakshuka base of red bell peppers, onion, garlic stewed tomatoes, a lot of spices and served with a side of fresh baked bread. Except instead of poaching eggs in it I use a pound of ground beef and double the spices. It's more like a Moroccan seasoned chili. So I gave it some avocado and sliced serrano.

Cost per person, $2.98
Partly because home made bread comes out to just 77¢ a pound, avocados are pretty cheap these days and the red bell peppers came from my garden.

I think he is stating that people don't have an invisible eternal Gender like a Christian thinks people have an invisible eternal Soul. I am a materialist so I don't think either exists. Shazeer goes on to complain about "sterilizing children" which is a red flag of transphobia (ie. people who post a lot about that tend to have a screw loose).

in reply to CinnasVerses

There is no need to give transphobes the benefit of the doubt really.

You don't believe in gender? I mean you're wrong IMO but we're cool. But if someone says the words "I don't believe have an attribute called gender" as part of a bunch of totally obvious anti-trans dog-whistles when butting into a discussion about transgender day of remembrance? Now it's a problem.

The True Story of U.S. Economic Sanctions Against Cuba

By Salim Lamrani
Nov 1, 2025

Unanimously condemned by the international community every year since 1992, this state of siege gravely affects the well-being of the entire Cuban population—particularly the most vulnerable—and remains the principal obstacle to the country’s development. From March 2024 to February 2025, U.S. economic sanctions cost Cuba $7.55 billion—a 50 percent increase compared to the previous year—representing more than $20 million per day and nearly $15,000 per minute.

That amount is equivalent to the electricity consumption of Cuba’s 10 million inhabitants for six years. With the same sum, Cuba could fill every household’s grocery basket for six years, cover the nation’s medical needs for 22 years, or guarantee public transportation for the next six decades.

Three killed in latest US strike on boat in Caribbean

Three men have been killed in a US strike on an alleged drug-smuggling boat in the Caribbean, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has said.

It is the latest in a series of attacks on vessels the Trump administration says are being used to smuggle drugs into the US.

Since they began in September, experts have questioned the legality of the strikes under international law, which have drawn strong criticism from Latin American leaders whose citizens have been targeted.

Tip #763

Copy web page titles from the Tab Bar.

Whether for sharing, document naming, issue reporting or something else. Sometimes it’s good to get the full web page title, especially if it’s not displayed on the page itself.

To copy the web page title in Vivaldi:

  1. Double-click on the tab or right-click on the tab and select “Rename” from the menu.
  2. While the title is selected, press CTRL / ⌘ + C on your keyboard.

Vivaldi browser window with one of the open tab's title texts highlighted while in renaming mode. A box with the text "CTRL / ⌘ + C" is above the browser window.

Google pulls the plug on first and second gen Nest Thermostats

Google announced the end of support for early Nest Thermostats in a support document earlier this year that largely flew under the radar. As of October 25, first and second generation units released in 2011 and 2012, respectively, will be unpaired and removed from the Google Nest or Google Home app.

Users will no longer be able to control their thermostats remotely via their smartphone, receive notifications, or change settings from a mobile device. End-of-support also disables third-party assistants and other cloud-based features including multi-device Eco mode and Nest Protect connectivity.

Thoughts on Drip Irrigation?

Hi All - I'm thinking about getting a drip irrigation system for my garden and was curious if anyone here has tried one. Anything that has worked well, or not so much? Brand recommendations? Rain Bird and Hunter have come up in my searches so far. Other considerations a beginner wouldn't think about? I'm in the US, so I also need it to be able to be shipped here.
in reply to dominotheory

Lots of excellent tutorials at dripdepot.com. They are a bit more expensive than others, but they stand behind what they sell. Twice they have replaced things I purchased that didn't meet expectations without asking me to return the defective items.

A drip system running off an existing hose bibb is simple to install and doesn't require expensive tools.

Mandatory minimum child pornography sentences unconstitutional, Supreme Court rules

I want to point out that the issue of Child Porn sentences aside, shout out to those who believe Danielle Smith will use the Notwithstanding Clause over and over again. Take a look at this quote:

In a 5-4 decision, the top court said although the sentences contribute to the objectives of denunciation and deterrence, they also remove judges’ discretion to impose sentences other than imprisonment when appropriate.

Conservative politicians swiftly denounced the ruling.

In a social media post, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the judgment “outrageous” and urged the federal government to overturn it using the Constitution’s notwithstanding clause.
