Our Best Look Yet at a Solar Flare

Scientists have unveiled the sharpest images ever captured of a solar flare. Taken by the Inouye Solar Telescope, the image includes coronal loop strands as small as 48 kilometers wide and 21 kilometers thick–the smallest ones ever imaged. The width of the overall image is about 4 Earth diameters. The captured flare belongs to the most powerful class of flares, the X class. Catching such a strong flare under the perfect observation conditions is a wonderful stroke of luck.

Although astronomers had theorized that coronal loops included this fine-scale structure, the Inouye Solar Telescope is the first instrument with the resolution to directly observe structures of this size. Confirming their existence is a big step forward for those working to understand the details of our Sun. (Video and image credit: NSF/NSO/AURA; research credit: C. Tamburri et al.; via Gizmodo)

Most major US airports are among 40 targeted by shutdown-related flight cuts

Airports in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago along with hubs across the U.S. are among the 40 that will see flights cut starting Friday due to the government shutdown, according to a list distributed to the airlines and obtained by The Associated Press.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday that it will reduce air traffic by 10% across 40 “high-volume” markets to maintain travel safety as air traffic controllers exhibit signs of strain during the ongoing government shutdown.

The airports impacted cover the busiest across the U.S. — including Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, Orlando, Miami, and San Francisco. In some of the biggest cities — such as New York, Houston and Chicago — multiple airports will be affected.

How's everyone doing with their fitness goals?

We don't have a ton of activity in this community, so it seemed like a good time to ask everyone how they're doing with their fitness goals.

  • What are your current fitness goals?
  • When did you set these goals?
  • How has progress been towards those goals?
  • What has been helpful in making progress?
  • What kinds of setbacks have you seen?

Ah, the South - where facts, evidence, and impartial truth take a back seat to being a hypocritically condescending judgemental prick - exactly as Jesus would do.

how do you actually use ctrl/alt?

supposedly the programmer layouts have ctrl and alt like old messagease had but i can't find them? all i can find is dessalines saying it should be in the thumbkey developer layouts in here: github.com/dessalines/thumb-ke…
in reply to juche fan

I can't seem to find it in any of the layouts, it'd have to be added. But also since thumb-key really doesn't have tap and hold, what are you trying to do?

termux and terminal emulators usually have a bar for these rare press and hold actions.

in reply to Dessalines

this is something I miss from messagease, too. there were special gestures for ctrl and esc. (up and back from the space bar iirc.)

China solves 'century-old problem' with new analog chip that is 1,000 times faster than high-end Nvidia GPUs

"The new device is built from arrays of resistive random-access memory (RRAM) cells.... The team was able to combine the speed of analog computation with the accuracy normally associated with digital processing. Crucially, the chip was manufactured using a commercial production process, meaning it could potentially be mass-produced."

Pozole Verde

1 (28oz) can of tomatillos
2 (14oz) cans of chicken broth
1 medium onion, chopped
1 cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro
2 garlic cloves
2 Tsp salt
1 Tsp black pepper
1 Tsp oregano
1 Tsp cumin
4 cups shredded chicken
2 (15oz) cans of hominy, rinsed
Garnish with avocado, radishes, and lime wedges

Combine the tomatillos, 1 cup of the broth, the onion, the cilantro, and the spices and blend until smooth.
(I used an immersion blender, less to clean)

Combine the tomatillo mixture, the remaining chicken broth, the shredded chicken, and the hominy in a slow cooker on low for 4 hours.

Ladle into bowls, garnish with the avocado, lime and radishes and more cilantro if desired.

Pretty quick and easy canned slow cooker meal for the weekend!

Why Tesla matters so much

This is why some of us are still out there, week after week, protesting at Tesla dealerships:
Mark Chadbourn on Bluesky posting: "Interesting piece: if Tesla collapses Musk's entire empire could come crashing down because of the way he's structured the companies' finances." with a big Tesla logo on probably? the trunk of one of their cars, with rain.
Here’s the story. It’s old, but it’s still pretty much true. Driving the stake through the heart of Tesla is how to take down the rest.

That’s why those of us who understand that this is a marathon are still getting out there, week in, week out. Not every protest, but over and over again, we’re there.

We’re not there yet. But sales keep falling. The more they’re reminded about who he is, the more sales go down.

We are that reminder.

Join us.

I'm 75 and I've been to most of the 36 weekly protests in Columbus OH. I even got injured when I fell backwards while seated in my rollator. It's getting colder and our numbers are thinning. Where are you?

So... anybody know what the drivers were fearing, exactly..?
in reply to JohnnyEnzyme

@scrubbles He's going to confiscate all cars and throw them into the river. Some dude on Facebook told me, so it must be true.

Lemmy Development Update October 2025

In your opinion, what MCU projects had the most wasted potential?

  • My first pick is "What If...?". In a multiverse of infinite possibilities, we ended up getting the same old same old. We could have gotten a nice, episodic, self-contained anthology series that had nothing to do with the rest of the MCU (as it was originally marketed as) but then they had to go and add a huge, connecting storyline. Not to mention the animation style could have been a bit better.
  • And then there's Secret Invasion, which by all accounts was a complete mess. A lot of people say that this should have been the main story arc of Phases 4 to 6 instead of the multiverse. They could have slowly teased the presence of Skrulls invading Earth (perhaps by revealing that some of the Avengers were Skrulls all along?) and maybe used the plot of Secret Invasion as a feature film instead of a series.
in reply to TheImpressiveX

We could have had taskmaster as a reoccurring villain. Imagine someone turning up that is steadily getting more powerful, starts bodying the heros, it could have been really compelling.
in reply to TheImpressiveX

While I think the movies are good, I think they should have had an older Spiderman. Not only has teen Spiderman been done so many times, but it would have made him a more obvious successor to IronMan and helped with the post endgame transition.

How to make sauces less potent so you can douse your food in them?

I love food that is doused in sauce. Especially Mexican food (like tacos or burritos) and Asian food (like stir fries) where everything is drenched.

The problem is, that a lot of the base ingredients in sauces are pretty potent. Like soy sauce or most hot sauces, if you "drenched" your food in it, it'd be too strong.

So what's the secret? Do you basically just add a bunch of water to it?

in reply to TheImpressiveX

Makes sense. Anytime you have to play the role of a character with mental issues, it's an opportunity to show your range.

In a historic vote, Mecklenburg transit and transportation sales tax wins approval

Mecklenburg County voters on Tuesday voted yes on an increase in the sales tax to fund a nearly $20 billion transportation plan that area leaders have spent more than five years working to win approval for.

With nearly all precincts reporting, the vote was 52.28% for and 47.72% against.

The sales tax on most items, except for food, medicine and some other categories, will rise 1 percentage point in Mecklenburg, to 8.25%

The vote caps off a push that began more than five years ago, and represents the biggest single source of new infrastructure funding in the region’s history. But question marks remain — such as whether the federal government will pick up any of the tab for the rail buildout — and the full plan will take decades to realize.

The funds will be spread between different transportation and transit modes: 40% of the new tax revenue will be dedicated to roads, bike lanes and sidewalks; 40% will be spent on rail transit, and 20% will be set aside for buses and new microtransit.
