It would certainly shine a light on why people almost exclusively talk about meat when talking to vegans. If "meat" is being used to mean any and all dietary animal products, or even just including dairy and eggs, not just animal flesh, then it would explain a lot of behavior I've experienced.

I think vegans know, that all you hear from non-vegans is talk about meat. Trying to provoke us by saying they like/love meat, or meat is tasty, or that they're eating meat, or in cases of the internet, people (farmers, homesteaders) informing us that they'll be personally slaughtering animals in our name and attributing blame to us for that action. But even in less hostile cases, talking about how much they would struggle to give up meat, or debating the ethics, environmentalism, health & other factors purely related to meat production & consumption, defending their own consumption of meat or others', while seemingly ignoring what a vegan is and treating us as if we're vegetarians.

Ever since being vegan, it's been a weird notable experience for me that everyone talks to me about "meat". When I was vegetarian (by my understanding of the definition at that time, which just meant no consumption of animal flesh/bodies), no one ever talked about it. As soon as I'm vegan? "Oh, a vegan. Meat, meat, meat." It would make more sense to me if people said that when I was vegetarian, and then started talking about dairy, eggs or leather to me all the time when I went vegan. But I digress. I do have theories, like maybe the existence of people who don't use any animals with an ethical association triggers them more, and maybe that causes them to default to asserting their defiant attitude to continue consuming the "product" they're most attracted to, meat (though you also hear very frequently "I could never give up cheese").

Btw- "meat" isn't what I would rather say. I don't even like that word anymore, at least when used for animal flesh, because it feels like a euphemism & helps distance consumers from what "it" is. Plus, it denies the existence of plant-based meat or its meat status (nvm how meat just meant food originally, including plants). But I'll call it meat for these purposes or clarity and because we're discussing how language is used.

Im 21. back when i was 16 i got into a really abusive relationship with my ex who was the same age, it lasted 2 and a half years. Back then i had lots of close friends that I could talk to about anything. My ex ended up cheating on me and had a lot of mental issues she had undiagnosed, she tried to explain her abuse of me as caused by bpd. I loved her so much and i thought i cant leave and lose the love of my life. The relationship continued to break down, she would yell at me for hours and break up with me then ask me to get back together within the same week and say she never meant any of it and that its her bpd. I was so confused and i slowly isolated from people because she would say if i talked about the relationship people would hate her and i would tell her they wouldn't but I still felt the pressure to protect her. keep in mind bpd doesn't cause behaviours like hers at all necessarily and its very likely she had commorbidities like narcissistic personality disorder looking back especially since she denies having any issues now and refuses to see a psychiatrist or therapist, she eventually started projecting that I have bpd and i thought i may at that point because of how insane everything made me but ive seen professionals and talked about all of this stuff and they dont seem to think i do. and i research these things a lot and based on my own research i think its less than likely that i do.

Later on it eventually culminated in her hitting me one day much later on in the relationship nearer to the end. after i moved slightly further away a smear campaign was started. she started claiming I was abusive and that i was insane. I had proof otherwise since i always screenshotted abusive situations and confusing times because they made me feel so confused and heartbroken. But the people who harassed me for her openly said they dont care about anything i have because im not trustworthy and must just be making things up. The people who harassed me were already people that hated me mainly with a few of my old friends too. one of the people listened to me explain everything and even said its believable and makes sense before saying they dont care because they were only listening so they could say it doesn't matter and fuck with me anyway because that guy specifically hated me a lot for a long time because i called out his fucked up behaviours a long time ago. sorry i feel like im writing so much right now my mental is fucked right now.

i got stalked and harassed on new accounts for years, someone made an account named after an account only my ex knew about and then dm'd me on it saying they were me and that they know everything about me and just trying to fuck with my head. The guy my ex was into near breaking up with me also made a new account just to reference that she probably cheated on me and to dox me online. Ive still not recovered from everything i get night terrors most days and im scared to get close to people. i have friends but im always worried about being an annoyance or a burden or that they secretly hate me and it makes me scared to talk about things i need help with or just need someone to talk to about. i used to talk to friends about these things. now im so desperate that even though i dont even like ai or think its very good at it I'll talk to ai about these things just to at least talk about things because it drives me insane and i get to the point of self harm when I'm isolated in these thoughts. i cant call hotlines they never help and just make me feel even more fucked and alone.

I've talked to a lot of psychs and they think i have severe cptsd, something i had been suspecting before I talked to any professionals. Ive done a lot of work with reorganizing my thoughts and trying to think healthier but i also have severe adhd and autism which gets in the way of doing therapy work as much as id like because i dont have adhd medication yet despite my diagnosis. I've still tried though and i know things have gotten better but at the same time im still so isolated. I have a friend i care about a lot and i cant even tell them anything i feel or think because all my brain can go to is that I don't matter to them like they matter to me and that i should just isolate and cut everyone off.

a few months ago my pet rabbit died, he was all i had through this all, i had some mice too that passed away, and he was all i had left. He emotionally regulated me a lot and since his death I feel all over the place, i deactivated my discord in fear of not mattering and because my brain is telling me i just need to cut everyone off and die. I know it wont actually solve anything but at the same time everything feels so meaningless i matter so little and i feel so alone i just don't wanna be here anymore i can't take it. All i do is harm those around me by being mentally unwell and im not happy or loved im just better off gone. i haven't felt this in a long time but everything feels so stagnant and I just feel so hopeless it feels like itll never get better and that ill just watch as i get worse and worse.

I think part of it comes from attachment issues i have now. That friend i have matters a lot to me they're the closest ive been to someone in so long and everything about them can affect me. all i can ever think about is how ill never matter to them like they matter to me and it makes me feel so alone and hopeless. we were working on something for their school together until recently and after it finished they got very distant and stopped talking as much, it already affected me before when i felt like i didn't really matter but this has made me feel a lot more insane than ever. i know shes not ignoring me though and things are hard with her own issues. but i still get in my head, before it was about the fact that i feel like i ask about a lot and care a lot about how shes doing but that it feels like shes never all that interested back in how im doing or feeling. now it feels like I just don't matter at all even if i know i do. she never seems that interested in speaking to me and has ignored me for so long since the project ended it makes me feel so worthless and like that's all that i ever mattered for, especially since before when i did ask for reassurance that i mattered she framed my importance by saying that she doesn't know how she'd get through this year without me, which just felt like all i bring to the table is helping her get through the school year by helping with work.

i self harmed yesterday for the first time in i dont know how long and it felt really relieving. at the end of my abuse i smashed my head into things until it bled and i may have given myself concussions i dont know since i never got anything checked out after but I'm afraid of getting to that point I'm afraid to feel like this and I'm afraid because all my breakdowns do is ultimately push people further away reinforcing the cycle. the more im like this obviously she wouldn't want anything to do with me im just ruining everything and I'm gonna end up all alone and part of me thinks thats better because then i can kill myself but at the same time i know im so scared to and that if i dont ill just be completely alone while i rot.

I regard rationality as a tool for solving problems and fulfilling needs. In my view, genuine rationality possesses three essential features:

Honesty with oneself—recognizing one’s own needs.

Awareness of the probability of success for the chosen strategy.

A utilitarian orientation—there must be actual benefit.

If these three points are met, the action can be considered rational.

Explanation of the First Point When a subject faces a problem, they should seek a way to resolve it. I believe one must set aside external voices and listen to the innermost thoughts. Once an idea emerges, the root of the problem should be clarified, and then a strategy chosen according to the circumstances.

Explanation of the Second Point When a problem has a direction for resolution, one should understand the success rates of different strategies under that direction. If one merely guesses at random, without clarity about the outcome or feasibility, this cannot be considered rational.

Explanation of the Third Point The use of rationality should aim at obtaining benefit. Here, “benefit” includes psychological benefit, that is, a sense of gain, though material benefit outweighs psychological benefit. I define psychological benefit as an additional gain obtained through one’s own effort—achieving the desired result and, after subtracting costs, retaining surplus. If psychological benefit is given passively by others, whether it counts depends on whether it was part of one’s plan. If it was intentionally sought, it can be considered rational. This definition of psychological benefit applies only to judging whether an action is rational.

Is schadenfreude rational? It is not rational, because feeling joy at another’s misfortune involves no element of self-acquisition; it is bestowed, not additionally gained. Envy is similar to schadenfreude but more oriented toward planning. It is not rational, because constant fantasizing consumes great energy while yielding little. Moreover, both are regarded by others as malicious acts, which can damage one’s reputation and future life.

Is avoiding pain rational? If the gain equals the cost, it is rational, because inaction would mean loss. If the cost exceeds the benefit, it is irrational. This is often seen in yielding to others’ non-coercive threats. Coercive threats refer to matters involving life, property, and freedom.

Are rational actions under irrational goals themselves irrational? This can be divided into two cases: irrationality due to impossibility, and irrationality due to failing to meet the definition of rationality. Actions under impossible goals cannot achieve the ultimate purpose, and are therefore irrational. Goals that fail to meet the definition of rationality are naturally irrational, even if subordinate actions achieve their expected results.

So this is a black currant Irish soda bread I've made before, but I wanted to try out a new flour that's local to me and I didn't want Thanksgiving being the test subject. 😉

So here's the first loaf of "Trailblazer".

Ingredients

4 cups [480g+, see note!] flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup [150g] dried currants (see note)
1 3/4 Cup [14ounces / 415ml] buttermilk
1-2 pats of butter (optional)

Instructions

Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl.
Add dried currants and mix with a wooden spoon.
Add the buttermilk and mix with a wooden spoon until it forms a sticky dough. If the dough is overly sticky, add a little more flour.
Knead dough a few times in the mixing bowl or on a floured surface until it forms a round loaf. It will start out sticky and crumbly but after you knead it a few times, the dough will come together.
Shape dough into a round and place in a Dutch oven with a lid.
Cut two criss-cross slices into the top of the bread with a knife (see photo above). Brush the leftover buttermilk over the top of the bread.
Bake covered for 30 minutes at 425F/215C and then about 15 minutes uncovered. The bread is done when golden brown and the internal temp is 180F/82C.
Let bread cool on a wire rack. Place a couple pats of butter over the bread and let them melt as the bread cools.

Notes

If you weigh ingredients >> Start with 480g of flour and add more as needed. If you use buttermilk, you should be fine with 480g of flour and 415ml of buttermilk. A few more sprinkles of flour might be needed as you knead it. If you use milk + vinegar instead of buttermilk, start with half of the milk and add more as needed.

If you use a buttermilk alternative >> I've found that real buttermilk works the best in this recipe and with the amount of flour indicated. If you use a buttermilk alternative (e.g. milk + vinegar), you'll likely need less of it. Start with half of what's listed in the recipe and add more a little at a time. If you add too much milk and the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.

Buttermilk alternative >> mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or distilled white vinegar with 1 3/4 cup fresh 2% milk and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Or thin yogurt or sour cream with some milk until you have 1 3/4 cup.

In place of dried currants >> you can use raisins, dried cranberries, etc. Or make it plain.

Was looking into this because of that recent Paul McCartney article that was shared, and wanted to share what I found:

Emissions:

• Vegan:............. CO2: 2.16, CH4: 04.39, N2O: 0.71
• Vegetarian:........ CO2: 3.33, CH4: 20.21, N2O: 0.98
• medium meat-eaters: CO2: 5.34, CH4: 40.88, N20: 1.73
• high meat-eaters:.. CO2: 7.28, CH4: 65.40, N2O: 2.62

So vegans have 30% of the emissions as high-meat-eaters, and the differences between vegans and vegetarians are significant with regards to their emissions, particularly methane emissions due to the significantly higher consumption of cheese by vegetarians.

Vegetarians ate significantly more cheese (30 g / day) than even meat-eaters (19 g / day), despite eating less dairy overall otherwise.

Also should be noted that there is a big gap between biodiversity impact between vegans and vegetarians, with vegetarian diets causing nearly double the number of species extinctions per day than vegan diets.

I was surprised that water use was so similar between vegans and vegetarians considering how much cheese vegetarians eat.

I still would recommend a vegetarian diet to meat eaters, as it's still a massive improvement (and in my experience, it's easier to become vegan once vegetarian), just thought it was interesting to actually quantify differences between veganism and vegetarianism in terms of climate impact.

The real internet exists. Fedfree's mission is to teach you how to use it. Every part of it. To most people, it is hidden. Your ISP might put you behind a CGNAT for example, or outright ban you from opening ports; one of Fedfree's goals is to teach you how to set up various kinds of tunnel connections e.g. SSH port forwarding, PPP over L2TP, Wireguard/OpenVPN, etc.

The mentality behind Fedfree is that all the organisations out there, like SFC, GNU, EFF, FSF... April... all these organisations are good, but they can only do so much. We as libre software activists must organise, but how? First, we need infrastructure, our own infrastructure that we control, and we need a charter that defines our movement. By definition, the libre movement is loose and free, where people can do whatever they like, but most people today use centralised hosting services like Github, which means we have huge single points of failure.
