OpenAI has already threatened to leave Europe if it gets regulated too hard. Imagine GEMA being the ones to drive the chatbots out of Germany.

...I didn't think I'd ever end up cheering on GEMA.

There are plenty of weird blogs, just look up The Small Web. There are less weird blogs that make money, but I can't say that I'm overly sad about that.

The headline is a little misleading: This isn't really about small blogs, but more about how Private Equity harvests smaller companies, and leaves their husks to rot. That is a very legitimate problem that needs some serious solutions.

Kagi has a great little feed you can use to randomly explore smallweb blogs. I'd recommend it!

As an example, here's this site dedicated to cataloguing the different variations of Disney park trash cans!

Uses for a 2 GB internal USB flash module?

Got my hands on a Dell Latitude ON module. Turns out it's nothing more than a 2 GB flash module that fits in a mPCIe slot and is wired to the USB lanes. Shows up as /dev/sdb.

I do have a couple of old laptops that don't have a secondary SATA drive slot, but do have open mPCIe slots with USB lanes (no mSATA lanes). The Latitude ON module would allow for a dual drive system, albeit a rather crappy one. What would you put on a secondary internal drive if it were limited to 2 GB and USB protocol?

Something tells me he'll introduce some multiversal problem that assembles all the Avengers with him as a leader of sorts, only to double cross them at the climax.

Fried Nopales

Wife found some good looking cacti and brought it home for me. I picked it. It was a bit too slimy for my preference. But then it occurred to me that that slim would hold cornmeal for deep frying.

OMG is this tasty. The cost is basically cider vinegar, onions, corn meal and frying oil. We need to go back and get more to plant here.

Solder Party’s KeebDeck is a cheap, open source 69-key thumb keyboard

A few years ago Solder Party started selling tiny USB keyboards made by combining an actual BlackBerry keyboard (ripped from an old device) with a custom PCB and USB-C connector. But since BlackBerry is out of business, eventually it’s going to get harder to find devices to cannibalize for their keyboards.

So Solder Party has now introduced two brand new products. The KeebDeck Keyboard is a […]

Canadian here. We haven't used the penny in over a decade. You won't miss it.
in reply to Chris Remington

On the one hand, I think this is part of a push to digitize all currency eventually so that it can be tracked (and controlled). It also makes things just that little bit more expensive for people who are unable to secure banking, as businesses will now round-up for cash transactions.

On the other hand, US pennies have always been imo a badly designed coin. They're both too bulky for their value, but not so hefty that they feel good aesthetically.

No comment on the symbolism of this particular administration killing the currency denom with Lincoln on it. 🙃

gonna have to start cleaning up some of the posts from the more long-winded assholes with opinions that aren’t more complex than “well I trust them to not let the technology known for creating security vulnerabilities run wild on their codebase, because they made the exact same promises every other project makes when they go all-in on slop”

for a fucking password manager of all things

like god fucking damn what did keepassxc do that made all these little fuckers pledge allegiance to it? what about this mediocre blog post is convincing? did y’all miss the context that this post is accompanied by a bunch of posts on other official keepassxc accounts where they give incorrect and potentially dangerous information in defense of their use of LLMs?

Spaghetti with meat sauce, parmesan, and parsley

I really like the thick spaghetti from barilla and using the starchy pasta water to thicken the sauce.

This batch might be a little too thick but at least it’s clinging to the pasta.

Just what I want - to have to expend a bunch of time and expertise that I don't have to try to buy healthcare.

They’re actually gonna be able to go out and negotiate their own health insurance

Perfect, that's my specialty! I love reading tons of insurance policy details written in confusing legal jargon. The American people are going to thrive with this and for sure beat the big bad DEMORCAT RUN insurance companies.

Israeli crowd applauds soldiers accused of raping Palestinian prisoner

Two Israeli soldiers accused of raping a Palestinian detainee were met with cheers as they arrived at the Supreme Court in Jerusalem on Monday.

Supporters in the courtroom shouted “We are all Unit 100,” referring to the military unit to which the suspects belong, according to Israel’s Channel 14.

Footage shared on social media showed the two men, their faces concealed by hats, sunglasses and masks, embracing each other as some in the room applauded.

Three Kobolds in a Trenchcoat (Animated Music Video)

Steak and eggs

I'm having a rather shit day, so I decided to cook something nice for myself. T-bone steaks were on sale for $4.99/lb at a local grocer and I had some left over mashed potatoes. I threw a little flour and garlic powder into the potatoes to make a sort of latke, fried up a couple of eggs over easy, and made some toast.

Attempting to Lactoferment Peppers

This is my second attempt at lactofermentation pickling. I tried for the first time last year and it went horribly wrong, so I haven't tried again since.

I received some self-burping jars and glass weights as a gift and have decided to give it another try.

This is 1lb of serrano peppers that I hope to turn into hot sauce when it's all said and done. The jars were much more full initially; the glass weights have condensed the peppers considerably at this point.

Today is day 4 (of maybe a 14 day fermentation period). The brine has started to get cloudy and I can see bubbles forming beneath the surface, which seem to be good signs.

Fingers crossed. If the whole process goes well, I'd like to bring some home-made fermented hot sauce to Thanksgiving this year.

Pollo e Patate.

This Italian classic is chicken, potatoes, olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper, a few sprigs of fresh rosemary from the yard and some parmesan.

I grew up on a bigger version of this. Once it's almost done baking you add a can of peas and toss a pound of spaghetti in the rendered chicken fat. Serve it all together. Perfect for growing kids. Adds like $2 to the batch but gives you substantial more food. Between the pasta, potatoes an peas you aren't just fully loaded on carbs but you have a full amino acid profile too and are getting all your protein aminos even without any of the chicken.

But as an adult I like simple classic. It's also less work.

Cost per person: $1.84

Crushed Legs. Gunshot Wounds to the Head. Shackled: Israel Returns Mutilated Palestinian Bodies

Under the so-called “ceasefire agreement,” for every dead Israeli handed over to Israel, Israel would, in turn, return the remains of 15 Palestinians. To date, Israel has returned some 300 Palestinians, but without providing the names of the deceased. Due to Israel’s bombing of the forensic labs, all of the identification is being done by hand, a laborious job. Israel had, of course, failed to place the bodies in refrigerators, so the bodies arrived decomposed. And also mutilated. As Palestinian bodies are brought to Gaza, their family members wait to find out whether their loved ones are among the dead, trapped under the rubble, or still held hostage in Israel.

I obtained pictures of some of the Palestinian bodies that have been returned – pictures that I wish I had not seen and now cannot unsee.

Pentagon’s largest warship enters Latin American waters as US tensions with Venezuela rise

USS Gerald R Ford’s arrival marks the largest US military presence in the region since the invasion of Panama in 1989

The US navy has announced that the USS Gerald R Ford, regarded as the world’s newest and largest aircraft carrier, has entered the area of responsibility of the US Southern Command, which covers Latin America and the Caribbean.

The deployment of the ship and the strike group it leads – which includes dozens of aircraft and destroyer ships – had been announced nearly three weeks ago, and its arrival marks an escalation in the military buildup between the US and Venezuela.

The regime of the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, meanwhile, announced what it called a “massive deployment” of land, sea, air, river and missile forces, as well as civilian militia, to counter the US naval presence off its coast.

Massachusetts considers expanding effort to ban gas in new buildings

Massachusetts lawmakers may double the number of cities and towns allowed to ban fossil fuels in new construction. A bill under consideration would add up to 10 communities to an ongoing pilot program that proponents say is already reducing emissions, making homes healthier, and lowering energy bills — all without stifling the development of new housing.

Cities including Salem and Somerville are lining up to participate in an expanded program, and some local leaders in Worcester are eager to take part, too. Boston, the state’s largest city, has previously expressed interest in joining.
