Bari Weiss’ much-hyped CBS News town hall with Erika Kirk was a massive ratings flop

in reply to Powderhorn

I did watch it as kind of a train wreck thing. It was so obvious that she was given the questions ahead of time. Every question from the audience was a softball. There was no pushback or extra commentary from Weiss on any response from Kirk. Pointless fluff piece.
in reply to Powderhorn

I'm sure it was a success for the customers. The viewers are not the customers. The viewers are the product. For the customers, Bari Weiss airing some shit that no one wants to see in order to inject it non-consensually into the discourse is her delivering a perfect product. She's doing her job. I'm sure it was very popular with the customers.

Which Linux distribution do you recommend for beginners?

Hello! I'm new to Linux, and I'm thinking of switching from Windows to Linux because I don't want anything to do with Microsoft, Google, or any other evil corporation, and I don't want them spying on me. I'm thinking of using Linux Mint since it's the most recommended for beginners, but there's also Ubuntu. I don't really care if it looks a lot or a little like Windows, I just want it to have a nice design and be easy to use. Kubuntu is also recommended for those coming from Windows, and ElementaryOS for those coming from macOS. I don't know which one to choose; they all seem very good to me. Here are some of the features I would like the distribution to have:
1. Nice design and easy to use
2. Customizable
3. Focused on privacy and security
4. Easy to install
5. Best for Linux beginners
Which one do you recommend? Which one do you use?

What is your favorite way to cook beans?

Beans are a staple at my house. They're cheap, healthy, and my kids love them.

I think my favorite way to eat them is in chili. Soak small red or black beans (or ideally half a pound of each) for a few hours.

Trim 1.5 pounds stew beef, add black pepper and salt. Brown in pan. Add in onion and fresh peppers (bell, poblano, jalapeno, serrano) and cook until onions are clear.

Pour a beer in there, Modelo works great. Add the beans. Add a can of chipotles in adobo sauce. Don't bother chopping, they'll break down. Add a jar of salsa. Add water to cover the beans. Add chili powder, bay leaves, oregano, cumin, and more salt & pepper to taste.

Simmer until the beans are fully cooked, probably around a couple hours. Serve with tortilla chips or corn bread.

And before anyone says "beans don't belong in chili," they absolutely do.

I'm always on the lookout for more ways to cook beans. What's your favorite?

Thankfully Linux still yas Linus who seems to be a simple guy who doesn’t jump on hype trains. But there will come a day when he either no longer wants to deal with the responsibility, or he passes; in both cases, we will have to hope that whomever takes the reigns doesn’t pull a Tim Apple approach to management of the Linux ecosystem.

Always willing to lend a helping hand.

Looking online it seems the leak was potato quality, but is difficult to find at the moment. There are some AI recreations that I found on Twitter which look similar to the leaked footage, but are just AI versions.

::: spoiler What is in the leak?
Chris Evans is back as Captain America. Trailer is him pulling up on a motorcycle to his and presumably Peggy's house. Cap holds a baby.

in reply to MimicJar

It’s absolutely crazy to me how trailers/teasers are treated nowadays.

They are supposed to be what hypes people up for the movie. Not the thing you wait for! “The trailer will release on X date”.

I’m not hyped for these movies anymore, but when I was, I never cared about the trailer/teaser. I wanted to know when the actual movie was getting released.

Now we get them hyping us up for the trailer/teaser and copyright striking people freely advertising for them.

in reply to NutinButNet

They're all ads, and different kinds of ads for different people.

For example exclusive ads appear during the Super Bowl. It's one of the most watched events in TV every year. I don't give a flying fuck about football. It used to be if I wanted to see that trailer, I had to watch the game. But nowadays I can jump onto YouTube and usually see it the day before.

But do they still play it during the Super Bowl? If course, because that's the trailer for that audience.

Several months ago the Marvel YouTube channel hosted a Livestream of chairs that slowly revealed actors in the film. I watched that video, it was for me.

These trailer leaks are for specific people. Are they leaks or "leaks"? The takedown creates hype. I want to see the trailer. I can't see it. When it is posted online properly in a week I'll be excited to see it.

What I do find crazy is the trailer before the trailer. Some trailers do a quick 5 seconds of trailer just before the trailer. But I know that's just another way of building hype. It those 5 seconds reveal something, people might keep watching.

in reply to NutinButNet

Nah. You don't remember the hype for infinitely war and endgame trailer? It was amazing. This is not the case for most movies, only marvel excels at trailers.

Lawfare Daily: Ukraine’s Asymmetric Blueprint in the Black Sea

At the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia held clear naval superiority in the Black Sea. Over the course of the war, Ukraine has developed an asymmetric maritime strategy using unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), achieving strategic effects against a superior naval force.

Ukraine has largely shifted from importing complete drone systems to assembling them domestically using foreign components, with China remaining a key supplier of many critical parts. What is more, Ukraine is now preparing to export its drones internationally.

In this episode, Katsiaryna Shmatsina, Eurasia Fellow at Lawfare, sits down with Cat Buchatskiy, the Director of Analytics at the Snake Island Institute, to discuss Ukraine’s maritime operations in the Black Sea, the use of drones, and the supply chains behind them. Cat leads a team of analysts producing frontline-validated research on modern warfare, defense innovation, and U.S.-Ukraine security cooperation.

Smoked herring on toast

I didn't have to cook for someone else. I like to think I am a normal person. That with no one looking over my shoulder I will eat like any other fully grown toddler left to themselves and grab some fast food or microwave some chicken nuggets.

But I had a small loaf of bread I baked earlier with no clear use. I started looking through the cabinets and found an emergency tin of smoked herring and an open bottle of port wine.

Okay, fine. I'll eat like a fully grown toddler from the 18th century.

This is sooo tasty.

Cost per person: $4

"Superman" has been voted IGN's Best Superhero Movie of 2025

in reply to TheImpressiveX

Does kpop demon hunters count as super hero movie? I think it was at least more entertaining than Superman or fantastic 4 (didn't watch the thunderbolts)
in reply to criticon

After watching more random anime, I think like half of anime is superhero genre, okay I'm sure there's an adult category that has more percentage. Though I assume this article's category had a limited acceptance like live action and Marvel or DC.

To be fair I didn't read on their requirements was more of a guess and since I realized now much anime was superhero (random people given powers or has random powers) related, I figured animated didn't count let alone anime.

I do enjoy animated marvel and DC, wait actually usually better than live action....go figure. Like it's almost meant for that medium.

@yoasif Mozilla has been taken over by a group of rich idiot executives whose only goal is to squeeze a profit out of the company for one fiscal quarter at a time, and will abandon ship like rats when the well runs dry.

They don't care that they're destroying their product or company. It's all about money and leverage to jump to the next company.

A useful tool when searching long-winded recipes, Justtherecipe.com

Copy the link of the recipe page you want and it'll remove all the useless SEO blather and give you, well, just the damn recipe.

No, I don't care if it's your grama's recipe from the 1800s and how it's changed your life and the life of your children and their children and your uncle and his uncle and your dog's groomers third cousin.

No, I don't care that you live in southern wherever and it's "that time of the year" for you to make something I make all the time and oh you need to show me pictures of your newly renovated kitchen while you're at it too?...

Apples as a hummus delivery system.

I had half a pound of ground lamb and more dough left so I just did a repeat of the lamb pitas with hummus. But for the hummus I went with apples and pita rejects that I made too thin.

I made an error. My wife loved the combination of pita, hummus and apples. She says she wants to eat that all the time now. I might have to start making hummus and pitas in bulk.

Rob Reiner's son Nick arrested and booked on suspicion of murder in parents' deaths

in reply to Chris Remington

Yikes. Very disturbing. I wonder what circumstances would lead someone to do that.
in reply to snowsuit2654

You'll have to wait for the book release / movie deal for more details.
in reply to snowsuit2654

Nick Reiner, 32, has a long history with drug addiction, which began in his teens. He told People in an interview in 2016 that he spent weeks sleeping rough on the streets and was in and out of rehab for addiction treatment that started when he was 15.
in reply to along_the_road

Or the pigs heard their son had a drug problem and arrested him with no further questions asked. We'll see what makes it to trial.
in reply to Chris Remington

This is a strange news story slash movie promotion article.

But damn, i didn't know Rob Reiner and his wife were murdered. That's crazy.

Google AI summaries are ruining the livelihoods of recipe writers: ‘It’s an extinction event’

in reply to Powderhorn

...

Please do not use recipes from AI summaries without clicking through to the correct amounts.

I mean, hell, I won't use a recipe I find on a recipe site without cross-referencing at least a couple other recipes from other sites, because some of those are janky as hell. But the best-guess of a summarization LLM on what all those numbers and ratios are meant to be? Yeah, no. Not by itself at all, unless you're just trying to jog your memory on something you already know and can recognize the correct values if you see them.

in reply to MudMan

A couple of decades back, I was editing a column with a recipe that lacked the unit for salt. This was on deadline, so I deduced from where it was compared with other ingredients that it was 1/4 cup.

Now, no reasonable person is going to use 1/4 cup of salt in anything on a household scale. But I wasn't really having my cooking hat on, and the proofer didn't catch it.

The number of complaints we got was somewhat comical. "Too salty; inedible," usw.

It of course called for 1/4 tsp.
