The Department of Homeland Security asked Naval Station Great Lakes for “limited support in the form of facilities, infrastructure, and other logistical needs to support DHS operations,”

Much as it pains me to say it, this is an on-the-books legal order so long as no active duty member of the military directly interacts with any arrested persons. Sharing of facilities and equipment is generally allowed and the only persons who can make rules to change this are the Secretary of Defense directly or Congress indirectly, and probably the President as well, perhaps by executive order nowadays.

in reply to coyotino [he/him]

Hopefully there are some real patriots who are willing to ignore illegal orders.

In short; more knowledge gives you more food and tools to work with. The more diverse knowledge, the more diverse ideas.

Is Mesa 25.2.x and newer broken for DXVK for anyone else or is it just me?

So, I recently started having a problem in Mesa 25.2.x where if I try to start a DXVK game, it just crashes instantly. 25.1.7 is the last version in the repos which works normally, so I downgraded back to that as it's in my package cache still.

Is anyone else having this problem or is it just me?

I tested with my Vega 56 to rule out hardware issues, and I tried a random DXVK game with the latest stable Mesa drivers and it exhibited the same behavior both on the Vega 56 and the RX 6600 I normally use, so it isn't a hardware problem.

Also, this happens regardless of if I'm running an affected game in Steam or Lutris.

I have Mesa and the related packages set on the ignore list in pacman.conf for the time being so it can stay on 25.1.7 until I know what's going on, and Vulkan and VKD3D both still work, it's DXVK that's affected specifically.

'Let the Public See Where Democrats Really Stand': Full DNC Floor Vote Demanded on Gaza

Those hoping that Democratic Party leaders have finally learned some lessons in the political thrashing they received in last year's elections are not yet done fighting for a resolution they argue would put the party back on the right side of moral history and also improve its prospects going forward against an increasingly authoritarian Republican Party led by President Donald Trump.

A day following a failed vote in the resolutions committee, members of the Democratic National Committee and grassroots groups demanding the DNC to take a stronger stand against US complicity with Israel's genocide in Gaza are not giving up—pushing now for a full floor vote to take place Wednesday on a resolution which calls for an immediate ceasefire, an arms embargo, and suspension of military aid to Israel.

Immigration advocates alarmed over detention of Daca recipient: ‘No legal basis’

Catalina “Xochitl” Santiago had already made it past the security line at the El Paso airport when two border patrol agents called her in for questioning and whisked her away to an immigration detention center.

Nearly a month after her arrest, she and her family still aren’t clear why she is detained. Santiago is a beneficiary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) program – which has allowed her to legally live and work in the US.

“>They have no legal basis for why they detained her or why they’re holding her or why they’re trying to deport her,” said her spouse, Desiree Miller. And immigration officials have yet to provide her or her family any clear answers, she added.

No such thing as "too old" to do something. The only limitations are your imagination and joint health.

[testing] we made it to lemmy 0.19.12 but federation feels off

the good news: we're now on the newest stable lemmy!

the bad news: federation feels a little off to me? sometimes this is a federation queue thing that resolves itself, sometimes it's an indication of a problem.

things to test if you want to help out:
- see if you can see your posts on other lemmy and mastodon instances
- post here from other instances
- see if you can load communities, threads, and comments in non-local communities (this is a big one)
- see if you can load our communities from other instances and see up-to-date threads and comments
- make sure your own profile settings are as they should be
- if you aren't getting email notifications and should be, let me know

I'll push all my changes and post a full changelog once we know 0.19.12's running stable!

Once again shilling another great Ben Recht post. This time calling out the fucking insane irresponsibility of "responsible" AI providers to do the bare minimum to prevent people from having psychological beaks from reality.

"I’ve been stuck on this tragic story in the New York Times about Adam Raine, a 16-year-old who took his life after months of getting advice on suicide from ChatGPT. Our relationship with technological tools is complex. That people draw emotional connections to chatbots isn’t new (I see you, Joseph Weizenbaum). Why young people commit suicide is multifactorial. We’ll see whether a court will find OpenAI liable for wrongful death.

But I’m not a court of law. And OpenAI is not only responsible, but everyone who works there should be ashamed of themselves."

Ask Claude any basic question about biology and it will abort.

it might be that, or it may have been intended to shut off any output of medical-sounding advice. if it's the former, then it's rare rationalist W for wrong reasons

I think they’ve really overrated how much it can help with a bioweapons attack compared to radicalizing and recruiting a few good PhD students and cracking open the textbooks.

look up the story of vil mirzayanov. break out these bayfucker style salaries in eastern europe or india or number of other places and you'll find a long queue of phds willing to cook man made horrors beyond your comprehension. it might even not take six figures (in dollars or euros) after tax

LLMs aren’t actually smart enough to make delicate judgements

Trump says he has fired Fed governor Lisa Cook, escalating his battle against the central bank

While the firing may be challenged in courts, even going up to the Supreme Court, Trump’s firing of Cook puts the central bank of the world’s largest economy in uncharted waters.

For example, it’s unknown whether Cook would have to leave the Fed’s board immediately, and if so, will Trump have the opportunity to nominate someone else to fill her seat.

Per Rachael Maddow, the President does not have the legal authority to fire Cook, but of course we'll have to see who does what.

in reply to memfree

Huh...

This might just be an exceedingly rare instance in which those corrupt and compromised conservative fuckheads on the Supreme Court won't just rubber-stamp whatever Trump wants, since pissing off the Fed, and the entire banking/investing industry whose interests it represents, could be even worse for them than pissing off the Toddler-in-chief.

in reply to memfree

Well, there goes the independence of the Fed, and our financial well-being with it.

Next stop, serfdom.

‘Malicious Abuse of Power': Trump Slammed for New Arrest of Ábrego García and Deportation Threat

A crowd of community members who had gathered outside an immigration office in Baltimore on Monday chanted, "Shame!" as a lawyer for US resident Kilmar Ábrego García announced that he had been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents once again—days after he was finally released from prison after a monthslong ordeal.

Ábrego García's lawyers are arguing in the Federal District Court of Maryland that ICE re-arrested him without allowing him to express "fears of persecution and torture in Uganda”

The team is asking the court to ensure that Ábrego García "is not put on any flight to any country whatsoever, whether it's Uganda, South Sudan, what have you, unless and until he has had a full and fair trial in an immigration court as well as his full appeal rights," said attorney Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg.

Secrecy and enforced disappearances: WA human rights group sounds alarm about ICE

The University of Washington’s Center for Human Rights is warning that federal immigration action has crossed a new boundary and is now breaking international humanitarian law.

The report zeroes in on 16 cases where people have been arrested by government agents and held for extended periods of time without access to a lawyer, or to the outside world. The legal term for such detentions is “enforced disappearance.”

”What I'm talking about is cases where days or even weeks go by that families still don't know where their loved one is,” said Center for Human Rights Director Angelina Godoy.

Mastodon är i motsats tilll Bluesky ett socialt medium som kontrolleras av användarna. Det är decentraliserat och federerat vilket betyder att det finns många servrar (som kallas instanser) som kör programvaran Mastodon.

Support for Phone Bans in Schools Is Growing, but Is It Enough to Help Kids?

in reply to alyaza [they/she]

Kids are being harmed, but so is everyone else.

We need to stop acting as if there is some bandaid fixes or regulations that can adress these issues.

Phones in general need to be refocused on their utility, and social media specifically needs to be rebuilt as a public services, and the notion of it as a for profit enterprise needs to be buried six feet under.

X-Men '97 Showrunner Ridicules Marvel's New X-Men Movie Plans: 'It's Sad'

Is anyone else sick of reading the childish nonsense coming from the bitter pervert Marvel shit-canned for being a perv? Fucking guy got himself fired and now all he's got is being a spiteful little bitch.
in reply to David_Eight

So he was fired and had his season 2 credit stripped for "Egregious Behavior", to which he countered that he was fired for being out and proud and posting shirtless photos of himself...

Then this happened:

comicbookmovie.com/x_men/x_men…

"It's claimed that DeMayo sent nude photos of himself in sexually suggestive "hero" poses to several young male staffers working on X-Men '97. His excuse was that they could be used as "inspiration" for the animated series (DeMayo also runs a non-explicit OnlyFans account which is previously said to have upset Disney).

The Head Writer was told to stop sending these photos but allegedly continued.

Sneider also claims that DeMayo groped an assistant on multiple occasions and was considered emotionally and physically abusive towards staffers."

There is no daily limit. Please just use common sense. Making multiple posts to a community in a short period of time isn't nice.

I just like reading a lot of news. People on Reddit told me there isn’t an enough content on the threadverse. So I wanted to help change that.

I now see what you mean by the warning from the other moderator, however it’s harder to check the modlogs on Piefed and it’s likely to go unnoticed through that method as it was specifically designed to avoid giving potential trolls a heads up. There was no intention on my part to ignore the first request.

Also Reddthat has a 5 article limit for each community.
