One of the headlines circulating around is "Local TV giant Sinclair demands Jimmy Kimmel make ‘direct apology’ to Charlie Kirk’s family, donate to TPUSA"
For those that don't know, a lot of the local broadcast channels are owned by large corporations. Sinclair has been working on gobbling up a lot of local affiliate channels across the US. They do about 3.5 Billion dollars in revenue a year (according to their 2024 annual SEC filing).
While they're not an outright right wing propaganda network a lot of their networks tend to have a bit of "right washing" over stories where they conveniently leave out important tidbits or have things skew to what Sinclair wants.
It's not a surprise that they'd look for any excuse to cut Kimmel from their line ups.
Their revenue break down is as follows
Distribution revenue. Distribution revenue, which represents fees earned from Distributors for our broadcast signals, increased $52 million or 4% in 2024, when compared to the same period in 2023. Contractual rate increases favorably impacted period-over-period distribution revenue by high-teen percentages for the year ended December 31, 2024. The increase in distribution revenue as a result of increased contractual rates was offset by a decrease in subscribers by low double-digit percentages for 2024.
Core advertising revenue. Core advertising revenue decreased $40 million in 2024, when compared to the same period in 2023, with no particular product/services category dominating the variance and was primarily a result of the political crowd out effect.
Political advertising revenue. Political advertising revenue increased $361 million in 2024, when compared to the same period in 2023, primarily due to 2024 being a presidential political year, compared to 2023 which was an off-year election cycle, and therefore only had a small number of political races and correspondingly less political advertising spend.

For a lot of these people this is unironically the first time they saw themselves in the victim and therefore the victim as a person. The first time the "tragedy" was more than a prop in the gun debate or something happening to their political enemies.
They see people mocking Charlie Kirk and their reaction is "Wait, Charlie and I aren't that different... They'd treat me the exact same way if I was the victim instead," and they can't handle it. Y'know, that thing that basically every queer person and person of color already knew about the right.
Hours after it happened I had this hole in my stomach from how bad I wanted panicking conservatives to realize this level of alarm and fear is how regular people feel ALL the time. There are parents whose kids won't ever come home again and THEY'RE not unique, they don't matter, and the DOJ isn't acting as their goddamn lawyer. Right Wingers are reacting like this because this is the first time a shooting at a school campus hurt someome they registered as real and not a crisis actor. Again, being angry, freigtened, and heartbroken is how the rest of America feels about gun violence, and we're just told to get over it. Was reading some science fiction from the 90's and the AI/AGI said 'im an analog computer, just like you, im actually really bad at math.' And I wonder how much damage these one of these ideas (the other being there are computer types that can do more/different things. Not sure if analog turing machines provide any new capabilities that digital TMs do, but I leave that question for the smarter people in the subject of theorethical computer science) did.
The idea that a smart computer will be worse at math (which makes sense from a storytelling perspective as a writer, because smart AI who also can do math super well is gonna be hard to write), which now leads people who read enough science fiction to see the machine that can't count nor run doom and go 'this is what they predicted!'.
this is one of those things that's, in a narrative sense, a great way to tell a story, while being completely untethered from fact/reality. and that's fine! stories have no obligation to be based in fact!
to put a very mild armchair analysis about it forward: it's playing on the definition of the conceptual "smart" computer, as it relates to human experience. there's been a couple of other things in recent history that I can think of that hit similar or related notes (M3GAN, the whole "omg the AI tricked us (and then the different species with a different neurotype and capability noticed it!)" arc in ST:DIS, the last few Mission Impossible films, etc). it's one of those ways in which art and stories tend to express "grappling with $x to make sense of it"

personally speaking, one of the ways about it that I find most jarring is when the fantastical vastly outweighs anything else purely for narrative reasons - so much so that it's a 4th-wallbreak for me ito what the story means to convey. I reflect on this somewhat regularly, as it's a rather cursed rabbithole that instances repeatedly: "is it my knowledge of this domain that's spoiling my enjoyment of this thing, or is the story simply badly written?" is the question that comes up, and it's surprisingly varied and complicated in its answering
on the whole I think it's often good/best to keep in mind that scifi is often an exploration and a pressure valve, but that it's also worth keeping an eye on how much it's a pressure valve. too much of the latter, and something(tm) is up

@techtakes You misremembered: Gibson wrote his early stories and Neuromancer on a typewriter, he didn't own a computer until he bought one with the royalties (an Apple IIc, which then freaked him out by making graunching noises at first—he had no idea it needed a floopy disk inserting).

Being homeless means the opposite of "safety in numbers." I've only let one other vandweller know where I park. It's safe, well lit and has nearby businesses with washrooms, which is a pretty decent setup.

In 2000, Unilever struck a $326m deal to buy the business, a move that at the time reportedly did not please Greenfield, with stipulations including the creation of the brand’s own independent board to allow it to continue to take progressive stances on social and political issues and uphold its core values.
This is disappointing to hear. B&J's has always been very outspoken about social issues, and it's something I was glad to see that they were able to do. It seems unlikely to be a coincidence that now is when they feel unable to continue doing so.

The MCU's been putting out "meh" and "camp" movies for years. (Thor 2). I still go because I have a fairly low bar for date-night, and they're still not the worst movies I've sat through. But I don't know if I'd want to re-watch any of the ones I mentioned.
I absolutely loved Dr Strange 2. If anything, that should have been any example of how the MCU could break from the mold from time to time instead of being the same.
You know upon re watching Black Widow not that long ago I was surprised how much more I liked it the second time around. Not the ending of course that's all garbage that last like 30 minutes of the film or whatever it is was awful, but everything else? The stuff with the sister and the family? That all really worked for me.
You know, I rewatched Thor 2 after watching Loki Season 1 (and Ragnarok and Infinity War and Endgame) and it was a lot better. I think it helped that I knew what to expect so it wasn't as boring.
No that's his point. This is what broke the glass for them. What shattered it. This is when they realize oh wait I don't like everything I've been seeing for a number of years now. That's what he's saying.
Sure the origin is different, but that's ok. I wish he would have stuck around longer, but he's probably too silly to really fit in with the rest of the MCU as established.
Besides there are so many things to complain about with this movie, an Ant-Man film that drops all their fun side characters, Bill Murray is wasted, and of course the big bad of the whole era just so easily defeated, just to name a few.
But this movie had fun scenes with the ant army, the various goo people, and just Paul Rudd being Paul Rudd.
Ultimately this film fails because even though it was just "ok" when watching, it ultimately goes nowhere. We're just coming off Phase 4 (if phases matter) which is disjointed and didn't really have a purpose. Here is the start of KANG... and he sucks. Teased in the Loki series, then something mysterious at the end of Shang Chi, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange play wit

I was really hoping that they would stop trying to keep to a single canon after Endgame. There’s no more stakes to raise at that point. What’s your next move? Killing and saving 2/3 of the universe?
What I wanted to see was for them to embrace the multiverse and just let go of a single story arc. Let the hero’s just live in their own worlds and don’t limit yourself to a single actor.

The tiny amount of free will we posses lies within the "narrow limits" of being able to accept and live by, or deny any amount of rationality or logic, thus, right and therefore truth that we might find within any amount of knowledge (including the knowledge of the experience) that we all seemingly stumble upon throughout our lives; we're all a "creature with a conscience" (Tolstoy). Truths ranging from things we've long forgotten and haven't even noticed we accepted like needing to drape cloth upon our backs to whatever extent or going about this or that hygiene habit (we are what we've been surrounded with), or truths we're in the midst of either recognizing and therefore, allowing to govern our thoughts and subsequently our behaviors today and tomorrow, or denying and therefore, not doing so ("we are what we repeatedly [think, and therefore] do." - Plato). Like beginning to strive to become this or that within the way mankind has manipulated its environment and organized itself up until now; to get married, or to believe in an influence of the divine to whatever degree (objectively, our knowledge of morality—religion, no matter the source, and the idea of an unimaginable God(s) or creator(s) of some kind are two very different things).
The future, as anyone of any present can plainly see, assuming they're assimilated with the history of humans to some extent and capable of contrasting the humans that lived x amount of years prior to them with their contemporaries, consists of a great combining of all the "right" and therefore truths we only ever continue to stumble upon, gradually purify of falsehood, and allow to become any individuals of any present times circumstances. As we see within politics for example, there are truths and falsehoods to be found on both sides of the political spectrum, and through this excruciatingly slow mellieniums long transitioning of continuously gathering up, purifying, and combing all the logic or rationality, and therefore, rights and subsequently truths we ever come to find at any point of time throughout mankinds history within our knowledge of anything—through this inherent and inevitable process, we'll come to find that our recognition of the truth as a species will go "from a truth more alloyed with errors to a truth more purified from them." - Leo Tolstoy.
Just as an alcoholic is able to choose to continue to indulge in their knowingly bad habit and deny the truth of beginning to strive to rid themselves of it and live up to the images they can't help but conjure in their minds of a "better," "purer" self, so can we all choose to begin to strive to become the subjectively "best" possible version of ourslves based on the standards we set via whatever truths we're presently recognizing or denying, or have unknowingly recognized long ago via the influence of our peers and contemporaries, and of course by looking within to our own conscience.
We can all either choose to be dragged along living by the effects of those that have lived before us, shaping our lives around it—a "career," money, marriage, retirement—becoming a product of our contemporaries and choosing the easier path that only leads to destruction (Matt 7:13), building our house (our life) out on the sand with the fool in the process, as most people would be inherently drawn to do (Matt 7:24), or choose to break free of these shackles, and live by being the cause of the effects of what the world is yet to become—an Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jonah, Socrates, Jesus, Abraham Lincoln, Gandhi, MLK. This is the tiny amount of free will we as creatures with a conscience posses: to be a slave of effects and be dragged along with it, or to break free to reach the "true life" of striving to be the cause of effects, building our house on the rocks with the wise, taking the more difficult path that leads to "eternal life," that I equate as a kind of martyrdom—your name and what you lived for being resurrected after death via our unique and profound ability to retain and transfer knowledge, living on to inspire mankind even potentially eternally, as objectively, Jesus proved—becoming a "sign" (Luke 11:29) to people, as Jonah was to the people of his time.
