Supporters of Colorado Propositions MM and LL [free meals for all public school students] declare victory
Preliminary returns show Colorado’s Proposition LL with a commanding lead, while Proposition MM is also ahead, but by a smaller margin. The two ballot measures would fund free meals for all public school students, give raises or stipends to cafeteria workers and provide grants to schools to purchase fresh ingredients from local farmers.
If there’s money left over from the taxes the two measures bring in, the funding could help shore up the SNAP program, also known as food stamps, for low-income families in the face of federal cuts.
As of 8:15 p.m., Proposition LL was ahead by 27 points, while Proposition MM had a smaller, 14-point lead.

Jeffrey Epstein had accounts with Goldman Sachs and HSBC, documents show
Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced late financier and sex offender, had accounts at Goldman Sachs (GS.N, HSBC (HSBA.L), and other banks, new court filings show.
The revelations came in previously sealed documents made public by JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N), once Epstein's main bank, in a now-settled lawsuit brought by the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Epstein had a private island residence.
Released to the public on Friday, the report did not provide dollar amounts or details about Epstein's relationships with other banks, but alerted authorities to money transfers he made.
A U.S. judge ordered the documents unsealed in response to requests from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Bloomberg earlier reported the banks' names.
In an emailed statement, Goldman said: "We terminated our client relationship with Mr. Epstein, and his assets were transferred out of the firm in 2010."
HSBC declined to comment.

Lemmy's removal of audience in posts?
Hi Nutomic, thanks for joining the forum.
While I have you, I wanted to ask you about the removal of audience from Lemmy. I believe the rationale for it was that it was not used outside of Lemmy, but both Piefed (rimu@piefed.social) and NodeBB use it.
I still think the explicit use of the audience property is more helpful than not.
I discovered another use case for it, although it is a bit of an edge case. Last night a user from lemmy.ca posted to activitypub@community.nodebb.org. Here, there are no followers to that group actor, so it did not federate here. However, one of the relays this site subscribes to did Announce the topic, and when it arrived here, NodeBB could not accurately determine whether the topic/post _actually belonged to activitypub@community.nodebb.org.
Specifically, it is because sometimes users (on Mastodon or other sites) mention group actors but don't intend for the post to be made there. It is not a strong enough signal.
But audience being explicitly set does provide that strong signal. I've updated NodeBB's code to trust the group actor if located in audience.
Fitik likes this.
Going to respond from here, the other account was mainly because that post didnt federate to Lemmy.
You are right I removed audience because it wasnt really being used at the time. But it looks like that changed, and its part of the standard that I wrote after all. So I will have to add it back then.
Re: Lemmy's removal of audience in posts?
I feel like that being explicit is more advantageous. There are some subtle edge cases that it helps work around.
Thanks nutomic@lemmy.ml for your attention 😀

@context field. After adding that it parses just fine. What you serve from / is irrelevant, that one is completely optional.
Re: My hypothesis on why Lemmy is rejecting valid activities
Re: My hypothesis on why Lemmy is rejecting valid activities
Actually I was wrong, there is a context so thats fine. The problem is that audience should be a simple string but you are sending an error, thats why it fails. Anyway that field is optional, so you can leave it out and put the community in to or cc instead.
julian No but still the field is mandatory (mainly because no one complained about it).

In U.S. first, New Mexico launches free child care for all
New Mexico on Saturday became the first U.S. state to offer free child care to all residents in a bid to boost its economy and lift education and child welfare levels ranked the worst in the country.Under the program, families, regardless of income, can receive state vouchers to cover public and private child care fees. It culminates efforts New Mexico has made to expand access to free child care since the governor and state legislature created the Early Childhood Education and Care Department in 2019.
To achieve a fully universal system, New Mexico must create nearly 14,000 more child care slots and recruit 5,000 educators, according to its Democratic-run government. The state is establishing a $12.7 million low-interest loan fund to construct and expand child care facilities. It is also increasing reimbursement rates to providers that pay entry-level staff a minimum of $18 per hour, above the state's $12 hourly minimum wage, and offer full-time care.

Murena Fairphone 5 availability - Murena - deGoogled phones and services
Are you looking to purchase the new Fairphone 5 in the USA? Fairphone have just announced the new Fairphone 5.Murena - deGoogled phones and services
I'm not in the US, but #Librem5 works with carrier T-Mobile and Purism's Awesim according to their wiki and forums.
I'm daily driving Librem 5 with #postmarketOS (stable - phosh) and everything critical for my use case works: VoLTE calls and SMS (although I avoid both now since #SaltTyphoon), 4G data, Wi-Fi, basic camera, GPS navigation using #PureMaps, latest apps from #Flathub, web browsing using Firefox-ESR, e2ee messaging and calling using Signal Desktop, DeltaChat, Matrix, XMPP, etc. and of course my most used feature, the headphone jack!
What does not work is recording sound in videos, although recording sound itself using Sound Recorder works, just not in videos.
Correctin: Recording sound in videos does work on L5 both on pmOS and PureOS.

What is the current state of Discourse to threadiverse federation?
I found this article from earlier this year: blog.discourse.org/2025/04/dis…
However, I haven't come across that much content from Discourse platforms over here on Lemmy/Piefed. Is there more work to do with the plugins, or should we work with organizations running Discourse to help them connect with us?
For example, the threadiverse communities for OpenStreetMaps is relatively small, and being able to see / contribute to community.openstreetmap.org would be amazing.
Discourse and the Fediverse!
Two years ago, we started working on a plugin that brings Discourse and the Fediverse closer together. Discourse communities are online spaces that facilitate open collaboration and communication.Penar Musaraj (Discourse)
Re: What is the current state of Discourse to threadiverse federation?
The Discourse ActivityPub plugin is developed by a sole developer but I believe it is ready for use. I also believe he is still working on the plugin so that's positive news.
Federation with Discourse forums is tricky, it's been difficult getting NodeBB to work reliably with Discourse.
Are you able to load Discourse categories in Lemmy?

I mean if you're going to criticize a billionaire, there are plenty who aren't doing anything productive with their money...
Scott’s gift to Howard builds on other recent DEI-focused donations. She donated $42 million to 10,000 Degrees, a Bay Area nonprofit focused on expanding college access for low-income and largely non-white students, alongside other eight-figure commitments to Native student scholars and HBCU endowments through the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).In September, she made a $70 million UNCF donation as part of a campaign to bolster pooled endowments across 37 HBCUs, a strategy designed to increase revenue streams and narrow historical wealth and funding gaps.
It did not escalate quickly. It escalated very slowly with people simping for billionaires.
A crazy amount of good is only relative to the money that you have. What she has donated is lint in her pocket
Shilling for a billionaire? Hah. What percentage of her fortune do you think that is? What is she waiting for? Death?
Laughable that you, from a commie instance, is standing up for a fucking billionaire. I always knew you guys were fake. What a joke.
ALL OF THEM ARE TARGETS ALL OF THE TIME.
The moment you let one off the hook is the moment you let all of them off the hook. Taylor Swift should be strung up next to them too, Regardless.
I like how you went from some snide comment about her not feeding people (which she has donated a bunch of money for, btw) to killing her and now Taylor Swift in particular for whatever reason. Very normal thought process.
Guess she should just hoard her wealth or buy 20 yachts like most other wealthy people since giving away billions is worthless and she should instead wait in the forever stalled line to be hanged or have the govt institute a wealth tax (that was a joke, the US will never institute a wealth tax).
escalate a simple comment
Bruh, you're the one that jumped to murdering them.
I lose patience.
Uh huh. So, are you gonna do anything with your lost patience, or just randomly say we should murder billionaires while actually just sitting around on your computer and hoping someone else will take one for the team or whatever?
Stop being a mindless "all or nothing" moron. She didn't fleece people for her money, and she doesn't have to give it away, either. Yet she chose to commit to giving most of it away, and she's trying to make the most positive effect out of it she can by being extremely selective about where she puts it. WTF more would you have her do to satisfy you?
Grow up, and stop being such a hateful ass. It's just another form of blind bigotry, judging people by some singular facet about them rather than considering the whole of who they are.
And, no, I don't care for Swift's music. From what little I do know of her, she seems basically yet another somewhat decent person at heart that's been gradually corrupted by fame, fortune, and the changes to one's life that come with such, but I think she still is a bit off from what I'd consider "evil." I can understand being disappointed in her, but not the level of absolute vitriol you seem to have for her.
A person cannot amass a billion dollars and not be evil. And if they somehow come by it accidentally, they can keep what they need and toss the rest.
How much money would YOU need to live a very good life without ever working or worrying again?
I just did some math, and 20mil is my “zero worry” amount. Heck I could probably just live on the interest.
Stop defending evil people, you sound like a fed
I'm defending her actions because I would hope I'd be even half as smart as she is. She's grown her initial $36B from the divorce, so now she has that much more she can help others with. It's a matter of long-term thinking, which you unfortunately seem to lack.
Never mind it's not her responsibility to make up for the shittiness of other billionaires, as I just said in another comment to you elsewhere. Be thankful at least a few of them even try to be decent. You'll never convince anybody that were you in her shoes you would give it all away either - that $20M you calculated looks great now, but just a couple decades ago most would have said just a tenth of that. What will it be in another couple decades?
Art & writing
Yeah.
I'm just pointing this out, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who will....

Not shakshuka
This is your standard Moroccan shakshuka base of red bell peppers, onion, garlic stewed tomatoes, a lot of spices and served with a side of fresh baked bread. Except instead of poaching eggs in it I use a pound of ground beef and double the spices. It's more like a Moroccan seasoned chili. So I gave it some avocado and sliced serrano.
Cost per person, $2.98
Partly because home made bread comes out to just 77¢ a pound, avocados are pretty cheap these days and the red bell peppers came from my garden.

in reply to Megaman_EXE • • •I hated having to take flights already, due to the Airports having smoking rooms which kept the doors opened and then air from the Aircraft ventilation system having tobacco stuff in it due to hours of intaking the stuff exhaled by people who have been smoking just a few minutes before boarding.
Now on top of that, this seems to be giving me a socially acceptable reason to just say "no" to using aeroplanes.
It would be good to find out if someone was specifically collecting incidents on crashes caused by particularly inexcusable problems. Problems like the one shown in the picture of this one.
