Social media giant Meta is about to start reading users’ conversations, including direct messages (DMs) and chats with its AI, with no option to opt out other than not to use their platforms – which include Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, which provides no option to turn its AI off. This data access will start in most of the world from 16 December though in the EU and UK, which have stricter data protection laws, it will start later – apparently from 4 March next year.

Meta spying

Industry media analyses have tended so far to focus on the issue of AI chats but Facebook, in a privacy update titled “Your activity and information that you provide” includes DMs in the data it can access, gather and use:

Meta has been known to provide ‘near real-time’ data on its users to the authorities since at least 2021, though previously this has not usually – at least officially – included the content of DMs. A report in Israel’s 972 Magazine and analysis by Tech for Palestine last year revealed that Israel’s ‘Lavender’ AI targeting system was using WhatsApp data to target Palestinians for murder, often based on as little as a ‘target’ being in a WhatsApp group with someone else who had been targeted and killed. Far beyond overreach

Journalist Jamal Khashoggi was also murdered in a Saudi embassy after his family’s WhatsApp messages were hacked by Israel’s ‘Pegasus’ spyware, which has also been used to spy on human rights activists, journalists, political opponents and Western government ministers.

Meta denies that its products contain backdoors and that it is (currently) reading messages. However, the company is now being sued in the US by its former head of security, who alleges that it allows thousands of its engineers to access sensitive user data and has not adequately tackled issues allowing the hacking of over 100,000 accounts a day. Complainant Attaullah Baig claims that the company ignored his warnings and sacked him for raising concerns. Meta denies the allegations.

The Meta issue comes on top of wider concerns over online security after digital rights group SMEX revealed that all Samsung mid-range handsets in large parts of the world come pre-installed with ‘unremovable’ Israeli spyware.

The Crescent Park neighborhood of Palo Alto, California, has some of the best real estate in the country, with a charming hodgepodge of homes ranging in style from Tudor revival to modern farmhouse and contemporary Mediterranean. It also has a gigantic compound that is home to Mark Zuckerberg, his wife Priscilla Chan, and their daughters Maxima, August, and Aurelia. Their land has expanded to include 11 previously separate properties, five of which are connected by at least one property line.
The Zuckerberg compound’s expansion first became a concern for Crescent Park neighbors as early as 2016, due to fears that his purchases were driving up the market. Then, about five years later, neighbors noticed that a school appeared to be operating out of the Zuckerberg compound. This would be illegal under the area’s residential zoning code without a permit. They began a crusade to shut it down that did not end until summer 2025.

I'm running on vanilla Mastodon but I have authorized fetch (aka secure mode) switched on so that my defederations and blocks work properly.

It isn't on by default as a long time ago it caused compatibility problems, however I haven't noticed any compatibility issues in the years I've had it active.

I wonder if Piefed is having trouble with this?

GoToSocial: Yep personal server can get there, although its hard to find the curl/url that its using because of the client/server relationship. And I dont know enough about go 😀

The Trump administration asked an appeals court to block a judge's ruling that the federal government must pay November SNAP benefits in full by the end of the day.
Why it matters: While millions of households across the country face hunger, the Trump administration is again arguing it does not have to cover the safety net food benefits in full during the government shutdown despite multiple federal courts ordering them to do so.
Roughly 42 million Americans rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to help cover the cost of groceries and other necessities, like baby formula.
Driving the news: "This unprecedented injunction makes a mockery of the separation of powers. Courts hold neither the power to appropriate nor the power to spend," the administration's attorneys argued in the filing.

A mockery of the separation of powers may as well be Trump's slogan. Maybe he'll put that in gold leaf on his ballroom.

Religion as a projection of unmet need

I had this idea the other day about how the evolution of religion over time seems to correlate directly to the part of the hierarchy of needs that most members of the faith fail to achieve.

God as nature

The first deities belonged to groups of people that were entirely at the whims of their environment. Storms, droughts, floods meant death. This was the time of Animism, where our god's controlled the weather, the crops, the change of seasons. These ancient gods served the physiological needs, ensuring humans ate, had shelter, and survived the winter. These were polytheistic gods.

God as warrior

After this, deities belonged to nations. The Israelites believed Yahweh would lead them into the holy land and defeat their enemies. This was polytheistic in the sense that it was believed other nations gods existed, but were engaging in battle with one another. These gods served safety and security need. Keeping us safe from them.

After the ages of war and the movement into glo

While their deliberations are typically kept private, the court may announce whether it will take the case as early as Monday.
The case involves Kim Davis, a former Kentucky county clerk who, in 2015, became a cause celebre for religious opposition to same-sex marriage after the US supreme court legalized the practice in the Obergefell v Hodges case. Davis repeatedly refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and, at the height of her fame, was even briefly jailed for contempt of court.

Gunn's days in the industry really seem numbered...

He's too big and no one tells him "no" to his face, so he doesn't take any feedback.

It's the same reason Lucas and a bunch of others started out great than sucked.

We don't realize their early great works were when people were still shooting down 50% of their ideas. That doesn't mean 100% of their ideas are twice as good.

Gunn blames "big fans" for overthinking it

Like, he keeps shitting on the hardcore fans (which I'm not even one) and saying all that matters is mass appeal. But people were already getting tired of him with Marvel, and it might not last long with DC either. The franchise jump let his style stay fresh.

But I remember one of the Peacemaker podcasts where a director was the guest. Gunn had a lot of toxic qualities pop up. And it was explicitly clear anyone else directingis being told to be as much like Gunn as possible.

If everything DC is "Gunn style" the masses will get tired of it, and he's already pissing people off who care about continuity. So when he loses general appeal due to fatigue of all of DC being Gunn-style...

They're left with no fans and a complete mess of a universe and need to reboot again.

I'm not so deep into DC stuff anymore, so I don't really keep up with what Gunn says and doesn't, but I don't disagree with what he says bere. The comic books fans do tend to underestimate non-comic book fans. There's a bit of an elitist edge to saying casual audiences won't understand if there are two Batmans at once.

I really liked Season 1 of Peacmaker, and watched his podcast about it and kept watching thru season 2.

I doubt he’s going to direct and write all of them himself

He's not...

But like I said in those podcasts they had a director from an episode and him and Gunn both explicitly said the guidance for everyone at DC is "what would James Gunn do".

Gunn literally said the reason he was comfortable with that guy, is he made all the same choices Gunn would, and the guy replied back essentially "I'm not making decisions, I'm doing what i think you would do".

Gunn runs the DC, and he only hires people who say he's a genius and do what he would.

Everything is the same, and people tired of it at Marvel, it's not a stretch to assume it'll happen with DC. Casuals like continuity too

I read this article completely different. He isn't shitting on hardcore fans, he's just saying that not everything has to be explained.

For example when Quicksilver shows up in Age of Ultron and his background is that he has a sister (Wanda) and was the result of HYDRA experimentation, no one looks at the X-Men films and goes wait... Now he's the son of Magneto? Where is Wanda?

Neither film goes out of their way to explain what isn't there or that they are different universes/properties. No one really cares.

Similarly, and this is a bit on Gunn for being too involved with Twitter and similar online media, when Peacemaker season 2 was in development everyone was wondering how he'll explain The Justice League showing up at the end. The answer was... he just changed the ending with some new footage.

Then he made references in the show to Corto Maltese. So now all of The Suicide Squad is canon? Harley is canon? So Joker is canon? So Batman is canon? So the Justice League is canon? Wow! How is Gunn going to explain ALLLLLLL that?

I don't disagree with this. Comics do this all the time and it's not like comic readers are necessarily smarter than movie-goers.

The other option would be to have no Matt Reeves Batman (I don't think it'd fit in the DCU) or no DCU Batman. Both would be a shame imo.

I loved KOTOR! I hope they use this as an opportunity to improve the story. It's hard to imagine, I know. But, KOTOR was missing a fundamental element of what makes Star Wars so great: family. Star Wars had star destroyers, light sabers, blasters, the Force, and ships. That was all great because that was the sci-fi vehicle through which the familial story was told.

Take the origional trilogy. Luke was a humble farm boy who was raised by extended family. But, as the story progressed, it was about Luke's connection to his father, Darth Vader. This culmunates into Vader chosing his son over power right at the end. When Vader dies, he looks at Luke with his human face. Truly poetic.

In the 1–3 stuff, Anakin has a mother. She raises him without a father. Qui-Gon was supposed to be that father figure, but dies to Maul. Kenobi kinda fills that role, a little. But, it was more as an older brother. In Episode 3, Kenobi says that he saw Anakin as a brother. Anakin even builds a quasi-family with Padme and, in a certain lense, Asoka as their daughter, sort of. That was what made her walking away from the temple in the end so tragic. It goes to how all of Anakin's attempts at family fail until Luke, which makes that scene of Vader turning on the emperor extra.

In the sequels, we kinda get the opportunity to compare the janky family stuff with Palpatine and his grand daughter. But, its heavily glossed over. It is of note how Ben kills his father Hans. So, it was there, but distant.

Star Wars Rebels was very much the story of family. Kanan and Hera were the parents, Sabine and Ezra were kinda like the kids, and Zeb would have been a weird uncle/older brother. But, family was what made Rebels so great. Kanan even gets his sight back while protecting his family to look at Hera one last time. That was Star Wars at its height of story telling. I haven't really seen a comparative level anywhere else to that.

Bad Batch, though a little distant and needing some squinting, was a story of family too. The bad batch were all brothers who collectively parented Omega, the adopted daughter. Even Dead Shot rejoins and "raises" Omega in the end after he chooses family over the Empire. The story finishes with Omega going off to fight with the Rebels at Yavin (sorta like a daughter going off to college).

The Mandalorian was sort of familial in that the Mandalorian kinda adopted Grogu, but Disney kinda glosses over the family stuff again.

I really hope they bring the family story forth in the KOTOR remake. Disney seems to not quiet get it and, while their games are fun and can develop a pinning of family in the stories, Disney missed the ball in Outlaws. It's sorta there in Survivor, but its not really touched on heavily like the shows and movies. The storys might progress more in that field. I hope its brought forth more in KOTOR.

Depression, head hurts a lot, healthcare is expensive, I'm a dependent, the only way I can afford treatment is if I get parents to pay for it... don't feel like asking, what should I do?

They don't even wanna "waste money" on depression, and I feel very emotionally vulnerable and have low self esteen when I ask about these things, especially for their financial support.

But I'm honestly just... idk, I'm too broken to even work, I don't have the willpower to do basic survival stuff.

The idea of suicide just keeps coming up.

My parents could afford it, but I'm just gonna keep feeling like a burden if I ask them for help.

But its their fault I even have depression in the first place.

But like... idk...

Don't wanna do this. Its so hard to keep going.

I am absolutely not calling a fucking hotline, don't wanna get locked up, under this [USA] political climate.

I'm honestly just stuck with parents, because the moment I end up homeless, is the moment I'll end up in prison, since... homelessness is de facto outlawed.

Don't even wanna go outside right now tbh.

I just cry all the time, because wtf is this existence. I wasn't even supposed to be born. What the hell.

I have since stopped going to doctors after thr doctor I had think I'm drugseeking and just cut me off, gave sone referrals, then referrals told me they can't help me, I don't know where to look anymore. So many low star rating reviews for these things.

Too much anxiety being alone, probably a remnant of that day in my childhood. I think I have separation anxiety, which is ironic since these are also the same emotionally abusive parents.

So... idk... what to do?

Life is just over.

I'll end up in prison, or a concentration camp, or shot dead on the street.

Idk how to live. I don't have much life skills.

Family is hostile.

Society is hostile.

Government is hostile.

The economy is hostile.

My brain is fighting me.

My physical health is deteriorating. Pre-diabetic, probably diabetic by now, idk, haven't seen a doctor for a while.

My hands just shake if I go like 4 hours without food.

So I'm pretty much dead if I try being independent, wouldn't survive long.

Idk what to do...
