Stillness
Light calmly shines
Ice, frozen in time
sparkles, giving no reasons
Natural cycles
Out on the battlefield of man,
brutal bleeding,
shattering bones and dreams
loud and crazed,
reverberating in shattered brains

Once a molten planet
shot out of star stuff
creating plains and seas,
rocky terrain,
spinning so merrily
with no idea of sadness
set into motion
Spiraling cycles
In crystal stillness
frozen tears break and fall
slowly, silently, into time,
knowing not what we have wrought

Possibly I'm not remembering right, but it seems to me one big difference between the dotcom bubble and a potential current AI bubble is that AI has become securitized. Meaning it's existentially tied to national security, so that legal/social/econ/government norms likely don't apply.
in reply to Zach Weinersmith

Like, the early web was mostly a bunch of nerds doing nerd stuff. Plus, the US was the undisputed hegemon. A bunch of idiotic companies burning to the ground posed no existential risk. AI potentially does.

I'm feeling a little mean... the neighbours kids keep hitting / kicking balls into my garden and onto my roof

I like hearing the kids play outside but am sick of having to fetch the balls off the roof etc, only to have them reappear in my garden in a short space of time

I politely asked the kids to give it a rest for a bit.. but 1hr later, 6 balls now in the garden/roof

The kids now have a time-out for their balls. The balls will be fetched off the roof sometime in the next week (and the ones in the back garden are hidden in a pot)

*sigh* feeling very mean... but balls on the roof terrify G&T
(Also have damaged screen from a ball)

Tidal's discovery really is terrible! I can't stand most of what it says I'll like.

I can go months without encountering a new musician whose work I love. And then I have a day like yesterday where I discover Empara Mi, who has a huge voice like Florence Welch or Freya Ridings, and Sam Brookes —although so far all I've heard is the Black Feathers album, but it's superb.

Can finding people music that they like be so hard? Apparently. Maybe musical taste is inherently unpredictable.

in reply to Wen

What does "no pat no track" mean? It looks like a typo, but I can't guess what it might have originally been.

Tidal creates a daily playlist for me. Usually I skip most tracks after 30 seconds. Sometimes there's a good track, but it's the only decent thing the artist has gone. Yesterday was very unusual.

One time it created a playlist after an album ended, and all the song titles had a certain key word in them, taken from the last album song. That's not a good way to recommend music!

in reply to Bodhipaksa

I agree that does not sound like a good recommendation algorithm. The usual way to do it is to sort of group users based on liking a similar set of items (in this case songs). Then you suggest things they haven't been exposed to that similar users have liked. So a recommendation is basically "people similar to you (in terms of song preferences) like X". You can also do the inverse, so songs are similar if the sets of users who like them are heavily overlapping. That allows you to do "people who like X also like Y".

The charge of “felony murder” allows defendants to be charged with the death of an accomplice, even when the killing was committed by someone else. Between 2009 and 2017, 83 percent of people charged with felony murder in Alabama were Black.

I’ve only read the first book, but I get why it’s considered to be unadaptable. Makes me appreciate this version all the more: “By prioritizing intellectual and thematic ambition over strict fidelity, Foundation accomplishes what many adaptations fail to do. It feels authentically Isaac Asimov without being constrained by his limitations as a novelist, translating his legacy into a modern, compelling, and deeply thoughtful space opera.”
