A Fast Rewind to the Era of Tapesponding

hackaday.com/2025/03/12/a-fast…

Hey, folks? Social Security and Medicare are called "entitlements" BECAUSE you've paid into them your whole life. You're *entitled* to them. They belong to you. You hold *title* to them.

"Entitlement" ≠ "welfare." But over the last half-century, Republican propagandists have succeeded in changing the meaning of the word.

Setting up Nginx Proxy Manager was easier than I thought! A few hurdles at first (longer blog post in the works) but I got it all working without much issue.

I am seeing things timeout every now and then but it seems a common problem so hopefully I can get that fixed.

I also managed to get docker running Nginx Proxy Manager on a Raspberry Pi, which had a few challenged but I think I've cleared all the hurdles.

The main issue was no clear direction on getting Docker and the container to startup at boot. Lots of forum post reading on that topic.

And yes, I still plan to use Podman when I can but I'm still new at this and just trying to actually get things working! ;)

Does it make sense for Firefox to continue having its own browser engine, instead of wrapping WebKit or Blink?

Pressure works.

NEW: Judge Chutkan GRANTS a request for discovery in the case brought by state AGs alleging that the conduct of #Musk and DOGE violates the Appointments Clause.

The permitted discovery includes documents and interrogatories related to the scope of Musk/DOGE's authority.

Found a recipe on the Good Housekeeping website. Bought everything yesterday to make it. It’s blurred out today - I have to JOIN GH+ to see it. D’oh!

Not too long ago Brussels gave this company a load of subsidies. Now it files for bankruptcy.

My husband’s sister, who lives in British Columbia, Canada, was telling him that people at her local grocery store are casually turning all American products on the shelves upside down to help others recognize them and not buy them.

Speaking from here in the fediverse, I don’t think any of us particularly want commercial ads or data collection. Just saying in case they get any ideas

Rep Jamie Raskin is encouraging people to send in #FOIA requests to #DOGE to demand an enumeration of what the department knows about each requester. Since DOGE is an official government agency, they are obliged to respond to these requests per the Federal Privacy Act of 1974. US District Judge Casey Cooper has affirmed this as well in a recent ruling.

An explanation of the campaign, and a form letter ready for your customization is found here: jamieraskin.com/doge-privacy-a…

in reply to Dave Rahardja

isn't this likely to just make them annoyed at FOIA and stop processing them altogether? I'm leery of strategies based on the assumption that they have to follow "the rules".
in reply to Christopher Batty

@topher_batty
Agreed, but then every rule not followed is yet another attack surface in the courts. And they will of course try to weasel out of court orders or ignore them, but that too takes work. No single grain of sand in the gears is the one that brings the whole machine down.

I found this site that lets you draw icebergs and see how they would float (joshdata.me/iceberger.html?fbc…) - I was looking for visualizations of the iceberg metaphor for behavior, how we only see 10% of what someone is really going through. It’s a great resource for that and also now I’m distracted seeing how an iceberg shaped like a cat would float.

While I feel more natural typing over handwriting, I must admit moving my journaling to handwriting has been a positive.

Less stream of consciousness writing, requiring more deliberate and slow thinking.

Walz: #Trump doesn't know how anything works. Trump is this caricature that had a reality TV show that pretended like he knew how to run biz’s. The reality is, he doesn't..

& then he tells his supporters that only he can fix it. He's the guy who goes & starts the fire & then stands there & gives directions & acts like he knows how to put the fire out

3/ Walz: Just like Elon Musk talks about entitlement programs. Those aren't entitlement programs. Those are the things keeping my mom alive. She paid into social security for 80 years. She should get that money back. And that's not what they believe

4/ Walz: "The idea that the secretary of education would not know what IDEA is -- individuals with disability in education act -- that's like your mechanic not knowing how to put air in your tire. And she's in charge of this nation's education progress. It is catastrophic."
