#WeevilWednesday

"Weevils, long-nosed beetles, are unsung heroes of pollination"

"A special kind of intertwined plant-pollinator relationship, thought to be rare, is present in hundreds of weevil species"

“We are highlighting a group of insects that most people want to see killed, and we're showing that they can actually be pretty important for maintaining ecosystems and products that we care about,”

It was on this day 36 years ago when @timbl submitted his proposal to CERN for an "information management system", precursor to the World Wide Web.

"In the proposal, Berners-Lee modestly spoke of wanting to use hypertext, a.k.a. links, to help CERN deal with information storage issues.

[...]

His boss’s response?

“Vague, but exciting.”"

My brother had been using wifi battery monitors on his, his girlfriend's, and my cars for the last few years since we don't drive every day. Apparently they were dependent on a cloud service that the company discontinued, bricking them all! 🧱
In looking up if anyone has found a way to use them without the cloud, I just found vendors still selling the now useless devices. The Deltran Battery Tender 081-0172. 🤦‍♂️

From TB to HIV/AIDS to cancer, disease tracking has always had a political dimension.

As federal datasets disappear from view, scholars explain why it is important to collect and maintain this information:

Occasionally I will get a spammy message from someone on here, and I always report the account and block them immediately. What's amazing is how quickly these accounts are reported already by others and taken out to the woodshed. Thanks to everyone involved in stopping abuse. It's fairly remarkable how ferocious this community is in showing spammers the door.

It's the "revenue model" and human moderators to users ratio that does it. I'm sure Meta's platforms get a similar response from users, and then four days later an algorithm makes the wrong decision and let's it continue because it bumps ad metrics.

#AbrahamLincoln had a puzzling relationship to #religion. For several years I had the privilege of researching the role of religion in his life for the Lincoln Home National Historic Site in #Springfield, #Illinois. In 2021, my research focused on religion in the early decades of Springfield’s history through the period of Lincoln’s residency there, which had a formative impact on Lincoln’s own religious faith.

So #KDE has this thing where if you violently shake the mouse cursor (to e.g. find it) it will grow in size to make it easier to locate. It'll grow 2-3 times before reaching a maximum size.

I propose KDE makes it so the cursor just... Keeps growing as long as you shake it, until it covers the whole screen. And then just keep growing. To whatever max size Wayland allows.

Huge win. Huge. Canadian Court upholds government restricting crypto bullshit use of electricity

"B.C. wins case for power use limits by cryptocurrency miners"

(Its not "mining" its wanking, nothing produced, nothing mined)

"The decision upheld an earlier court ruling against Conifex Timber Ltd., a forestry company located in Prince George .... The company was seeking unrestricted access to B.C. electricity."

I urge going further.

There is nothing produced in crypto, no farms selling eggs, making a small profit, no furniture makers making cool chairs for a choosy market.

There are no eggs in crypto, no chairs, no electric planes built, not a single candy, no fertilizer, just counterfeit money.

REQUIRE crypto build its own renewable green energy source for 120% of their wanking needs, ALWAYS more than they use.

And data centres too.

No crypto use of utility power.

A friend of mine posted this on another platform.

I couldn't agree more.

Thing is, we're still brothers and sisters 30 years later.

Tough decision for Dem Senators.

Vote down the budget bill and shut down the government OR fold and vote to allow the MAGAts to dismantle it anyway, which they are going to do regardless of any budget passed.

If you're got a lose/lose hand at least stand up and own the fight.

in reply to Warner Crocker

Try a different framing, even though I realize the legacy media will fail.

The Republicans will be shutting down the government. The Republicans are doing this. They are extremists using the budget to harm the American people and national security. Democrats should not collaborate. President Musk is shutting things down and disabling agencies while Trump is placing entirely corrupt individuals in charge of them. The framing needs to be on what the Republicans are doing, and not of Democrats who will not collaborate with causing damage.

I've heard the word Tariffs more times in the past 3 weeks than I have in 40yrs. And Canadian History is a mandatory credit in high school here.

I shouldn't be shocked, but I still am. We're living through this point in history right after surviving a global pandemic.

girl who wants to sleep but has to rip hairs out of her body first or else she cant feel pretty

There was a time, when I was an apprentice in the air force, that I could honestly name a hundred people who were friends.

Right now, I couldn't name ten.

Which makes me look at the 32, wait, 33 people, who subscribe to my writing newsletter, and feel like this is *cozy*

Then I wonder, at start point will I feel like my newsletter is a commodity, rather than friends?

@alan
ah .. but there is always that *maybe* that some really big influencer will notice your work, and suddenly there you are, with a 100k readers 😀

I mean, stranger things have happened, and some of those people with the million sales are neither good writers not nice people. So why not you, eh? 😀

in reply to Humphrey Archer

I submit that if [famous person] says "this is the bestest book ever", I'll get a bump in sales and a pile of followers over on Bluesky (where I plan to broadcast, not converse), but still the people who take the next step and come here or sign up for my newsletter are the ones who are looking for more of a connection.

Does anyone know a good supplier of ant farms might be? My kid is suddenly super interested in ants and I want to strike while the iron is hot.

(I would like to point out I have no idea what I’m doing.)

in reply to rk: could be an enum

If you are handy you can make your own with your kid, it’s really not that hard and there are lots of tutorials. It can be as cheap as you want and you’d spend time with your child creating everything.

On youtube there are channels like D colony or Texants that are very interesting for the #DIY route.

To get the queen you can check which species are in your area and catch some (I recommend more than one since sometimes they don’t make it or they are not fertilized) once the flights start. You can also ask local people for a starter colony since many times people have some from last year already with brood.

Good luck!

SXSW and CSUN are fully the same week this year, and I’ve been to neither. Which mostly means I have to pay for my own tacos and coffee, like an animal.
in reply to Ricky Enger

It’s very sad isn’t it? But the more people who didn’t go, the less FOMO I have.
in reply to Shelly Brisbin

Oh, I would be extremely bothered by this. The construction is happening in the hotel across the street from the main one, but nevertheless a lot of people stay there, and there are networking events and meetings there as well. i guess I'd have been missing the event this year anyway, given I got sick right before it would've been time to fly out.
