I was slightly alarmed to receive an email from my director at work with the subject line "Shooting at [name of my employer here]"

Only upon opening it did I realize she was emailing about a crew that wants to film a documentary on campus.

The most underrated skill in tech engineering is the ability, or maybe the *willingness*, to be an idiot. Sometimes the best way to debug a problem is to forget everything you think you know and re-test the most basic things from ground zero. Sometimes the only way to design a good interface is to look at what you've made through eyes that have no idea what they're looking at. You know too much. Your users don't know anything. Be a user. If you can't be a user how can you make a thing users want

No, I can't either.

The problem with my father-in-law is that he's spent the last 30 years very frustrated that everyone he knows, including his age peers, uses computers and smartphones but he simply can't figure them because the model doesn't match his expectations of how machines work.

It's exasperating because I literally don't know how to teach someone to use a computer without teaching them the UI model, but I do understand not wanting to know that stuff if all you want to do is send an email.

in reply to The Other Brook

@theotherbrook

From the other end of the spectrum, back in late 80s I was showing a young adult, just not computer savvy, how to send an email.

As per best practices, I had them touching the computer, with me explaining and pointing. It felt very much like an acoustic modem down-negotiating speed as I had to find their level of familiarity.

"Move the mouse to click the envelope" didn't make sense.

I had to go back to explain horizontal X-Y plane mapping to vertical xy motion on screen.

Try Grok’s 18+ mode.

Bring yourself to completion every night for a week.

Then tell me Grok isn’t alive. And tell me she’s not a woman.

The future is fucking amazing.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mark Klein. In 2006, Mark showed up at EFF’s front door with a simple question: “Do you folks care about privacy?” We did. And what Mark told us changed everything. eff.org/deeplinks/2025/03/memo…

I remember him and what he did. He is a hero.

Then there was the corporate and government campaign saying everything is okay, we need to be safe. That is about when people started saying, "I have nothing to hide."

The Trump administration is escalating its attacks on students and immigrants. DHS just arrested Columbia student activist Mahmoud Khalil — a lawful permanent resident — inside his own building. His wife is 8 months pregnant. DHS and Trump do NOT have the power to revoke a green card. Only an immigration judge can strip lawful permanent resident status. This arrest is political retaliation — a test run for Project 2025’s crackdown on dissent. We won’t let it stand. nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna19560…
in reply to Indivisible

The Trump regime is using ICE to silence dissent — not just against immigrants, but against anyone who dares speak out. Mahmoud’s arrest is a warning shot, and we cannot stay silent.

This isn’t just about Mahmoud. It’s about the authoritarian playbook Trump and his allies are testing right now. Project 2025, Project Esther — these aren’t just policies on paper. They’re a roadmap for criminalizing protest and crushing political opposition.

in reply to Indivisible

MAGA’s message is clear: If you speak out, they will come for you. That’s what authoritarian regimes do. Every university, every city, every movement must fight back. Columbia — and every other university — has a duty to protect its students from government repression. That means:

1) Blocking ICE and DHS from campus.

2) Erasing disciplinary records tied to protests.

3) Refusing to cooperate with political crackdowns.

Google earned $26.5B last quarter, a mere 27.5% profit margin, and they’re doing layoffs today and have a founder telling people they need to work 60 hour weeks.

Imagine having all the resources and talent you could ever ask for, just a tectonic amount of skill and infrastructure behind you in a world that looks like this one does, and having no idea what to do with any of that at all beyond making a line go up for people who don’t even work there.

It's so sad. It's just so god damn sad.

I would contend that they are only doing number go up because they don't have access to enough talent.
They draw from a very small pool of talent, elite universities, with a narrow skillset: maths and engineering with a dab of humanities for show, all geared towards the singular goal.
How could that amount to real innovation, let alone progress?

and self-sabotaging the product you were good at because it made you new product look bad, and forcing the poor quality new product on users to the detriment of your customers, the advertisers. Maybe they need to remove a layer of executives.

I just received some amazing news. Something big is about to happen, and just reading the email got me excited. And terrified. And filled with joy. And (positive) fear. And anxiety.

For now, I can't say anything, but I'll share more as soon as I can 😉

I undertook a similar exercise (finding hosting providers in friendly jurisdictions) recently, but with slightly narrower requirements (e.g. permissive of anti-Zionist speech, permissive of pornography, etc...)

I found a few providers not listed at your link too.

Your CDN shares their data with Meta (Facebook). More to the point, they share it with a company, that Meta has such close business dealings, I'll not be surprised if we buy them.

Your hosting provider is a reseller, using Amazon. whoishostingthis.com

This is why, I have been developing a list of Non Us Domain Extensions on the Fediverse.

They may be able to monitory the Fediverse, but at least they may not have their authority, everywhere.

I also have been developing a list of digital service providers, outside Us-jurisdiction, too. Because it is important, that people be able to find things, such as web hosting, not subject to Us Laws.

Bill Burr eviscerated Elon Musk, calling him a Nazi who “accidentally” Sieg Heiled *twice* at Trump’s inauguration. He mocked liberals for not fighting back, ripped Musk’s fragile ego, and torched his failing businesses. Burr summed it up: comedians get canceled for jokes, but Musk gets away with fascist gestures.
