RFK Jr.: It Would Be Better if ‘Everybody Got Measles’

“It used to be, when I were a kid, that everybody got measles. And the measles gave you lifetime protection against measles infection,” he said, then taking a swipe at the vaccine. “The vaccine doesn’t do that. The vaccine is effective for some people for life, but for many people it wanes.” 🤦‍♂️

Can we please NOT give nazis megaphones? I mean, ~probably~ most of your followers know those are lies, but rather than quoting him directly in a way that might get amplified to people who don't know better, even just sticking in someone's head subconsciously, report on what they lied about:

"RFK called for everyone to get measles, citing a lie that getting it provides lifetime immunity and that the vaccine does not. In reality, getting measles destroy's the immune system's memory of past infections, rendering one susceptible to other deadly diseases."

The act of encrypting things *always* makes them (seem) more interesting.

You can use encryption to keep secrets, but, in using encryption, may let others know that you even have a secret at all.

So, the very best kind of encryption is both un-openable without a very large securely transported key AND not obviously (or even unobviously) encrypted at all.

Dear Canadians,

I have learned that you can make the federal government mail you tax forms for free.

canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/se…

I have asked for English AND French. I wonder if this counts as malicious compliance.

in reply to 🔥Cassandra🔥

I'm finally beginning to do my taxes.

So far I've learned that you can only claim medical expenses if you have at least $4275 of income.

in reply to 🔥Cassandra🔥

Okay, I completed and mailed my taxes today, perhaps just in time for another Canada Post strike.

I included a note for the feds about how I’m doing it on paper this year because way too many “approved” services store Canadians’ personal tax info in the US. (I also circled in red ink the bad translation job on their envelope.)

I had to mail two separate larger-than-normal envelopes, so I slapped two “permanent” stamps on each one and am hoping that works out to $1.94 or whatever the current in-store postage amount is.

Will both packages arrive? Maybe. Are my numbers correct? Maybe. Are my principles and supporting documents correct? I’m confident in my case.

I empathize with this neighbor aversion. The place where I lived as a child had an unwritten rule. You keep your head down and mouth shut. We moved when I was a teen. For a while, we had some nice neighbors. Some questionable business practices caused the apartment complex to go downhill. Police became a common sight. We moved again in my college years. A few neighbors became more than sharing pleasantries. Sadly, they left. A few retired, one passed, and one left because of severe racism. They were a great family. It hurt to lose them, but we wish them the best. I'm still afraid to get to know my neighbors, but I try to be kind.

The amount of AI-generated robo-voiced ads now on Serius XM is a bit nauseating, just wow. You can even tell, most of them don't take a breath and say the numbers repeatedly the same way. True, true. It could be edited, but I'm also hearing the same voices across multiple ads, like that one female lady who sort of sounds like Ivona Sally. I bet a lot of ad agencies have jumped on the AI train. WI've even heard ads on there referencing the new tarifs, so just the update interval for ads is also much higher now as a result, an ad can change from one day to the next. Interesting side effect.

Seeing a bunch of devs on bsky saying not to go or that they've canceled their plans to go to GDC

Given how many people are being detained for weeks/months for stretched interpretations of "they're working illegally" and how basically everyone goes to GDC for work I can't say I disagree

Wonder what this kind of thing will do to the US economy over the long term

@deshipu Yup, I was about to say (and still am going to, sorry), we will be in a recession long before the effects of this particular thing are felt. Hell, we might be in a depression by then.
in reply to Eniko (moved ➡ gamedev.place)

Long term, I think this is very destructive to the US economy.

I forget where I saw it first, but others have mentioned that some of the big attractions for capital are the rule of law, a decent regulatory environment, a free market, a sense of fair play, and a history of honoring their commitments.

That's all out the window now.

I think there's no good reason why any company would choose to do business here rather than somewhere like Canada, Mexico, the UK, France or Germany. Even if they have an inside connection with the political power currently in office, it's a fragile and subject to the whims of the despot.

80 years of goodwill destroyed in a few weeks.

Neato feature of the sidebar in Firefox is that when I'm F11'd the vertical tabs are still there, while hiding the URL bar.

This feels more intuitive and less "jarring" than horizontal tabs, which disappear and reappear when using the mouse to switch tabs in this mode.

in reply to vkc (Veronica Explains)

Oohh nice, I just enabled the sidebar and I already really like how pinned tabs are displayed. It still feels weird after havig tabs at the top forever, but I think I give it at least a few days.
in reply to vkc (Veronica Explains)

Hi Veronica. You can choose not to have the horizontal tabs disappear in fullscreen by disabling the browser.fullscreen.autohide parameter in about:config .

in reply to Danpiker

The surface shown in my last few posts can be described as a diagonal on the hypersphere. In this 🧵 I'll expand a bit on what I mean by that.

On a sphere we can trace 'loxodrome' curves of constant bearing, diagonal to the longitude/latitude directions, spiralling from one pole of the sphere to the antipodal one.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhumb_li…

Stereographically projecting from the top pole onto a horizontal plane gives logarithmic spirals, where one of the poles projects to the point at infinity. However, if instead we turn the sphere on its side before projecting we get a family of beautiful double spiral curves which reveal the true symmetrical nature of the 2 poles.

in reply to Danpiker

What is the equivalent of these curves in one dimension up?

Instead of the familiar sphere in 3d space a.k.a. the 2-sphere (which can be parameterised with 2 coordinates, longitude and latitude) we now have the 3-sphere or hypersphere in 4d space.

One particularly nice way of parameterising the 3-sphere is using Hopf coordinates (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3-sphere…).

Stereographic projection which maps the 2-sphere to the flat plane can also be generalised to higher dimensions, and it conformally maps the 3-sphere to our familiar Euclidean 3d space.

This projects Hopf coordinates to a triply orthogonal system composed of spheres, planes and nested tori. At one extreme the torus becomes a horizontal circle and at the other a vertical line (or circle through infinity) through its centre (see toroidal coordinates here mathcurve.com/surfaces.gb/trip…).

Gender, HRT, dysphoria/euphoria

in reply to Non binAmy

re: Gender, HRT, dysphoria/euphoria
passing is something that isn't really important to us either, partially because we've kinda internalized that because of our height and proportions, we'll never pass, so there's not really any use in stressing over it. And in terms of gender, I believe that gender is unique to every individual in how they feel and express themselves. I grew up forced to conform to one gender, and the idea of transitioning just to conform to another feels restraining. Like, I'm waaaayyy more like a girl than anything else, but I'm not going to do or not do anything just because "girls do that/girls don't do that". I am myself, that's my gender, and I'm going to express it however I see fit, and not worry about passing or fitting in.
