Today:

- was one of those beautiful autumn days, cool at night, still and sunny during the day (especially welcome after 2 cold wet days)

- for the first time I wore the jersey I finished knitting over summer and it was so soft and comfortable

- I had my weekly scone and pot of tea at the garden cafe and it was lovely there as always

Sometimes its easy to lose sight of the individual stories behind the callous 'hostile environment' that the British state presents to migrants... so here is a BBC story about two cases, which show the impact of the policy on individuals & the difficulty of proving their British status.

Its heartbreaking but will also make you angry with the faceless bureaucrats & smug politicians who cause so much pain needlessly!

As someone wrote in a post AI is 90%hype and 10% useful. We have human intelligence. Using AI to compose a letter or write a book is sheer laziness and turning us into zombies. Apart from specialist data mining purposes AI serves little purpose.
in reply to iveyline

@iveyline
Where mindless form is required "AI" is just as well an answer as non-compliance. In other words, LLMs can be a high-tech tool of sabotage for Luddites in the socio-technological realm.

so turns out the reason i feel like shit a lot and literally feel like im dying when i exert myself like at all is just high blood pressure

systolic of 143 at rest (mild hypertension) and went up another 30 after just walking up and down the stairs 4 times

and mind you, i only walked the stairs long enough to *start* feeling bad. most times i push myself way beyond that point (other times i only stop once i literally cant anymore and feel like like im about to pass out and/or throw up)

in reply to beanzip2

probably psychosomatic considering when its not triggered by exercise the agoraphobia tends to do the trick

Hey smartwatchgebruikers! Dragen jullie 'm 's nachts?

in reply to Bart Groeneveld

in reply to Gadgetbridge

@gadgetbridge

We cannot fathom operating 2 separate bodies because 1 body is overwhelming as it is.

We operate our body with a single processor, the brain. Our organs are also managed by the brain. The brain is highly optimized to operate each of our organs, control motor functions, and allow us to think.

1 brain cannot control 2 bodies, there's simply too much going on. Likewise, 2 full brains cannot control the same body, they would fight for resources. Organs keep the brain alive, the brain keeps organs alive. It's a 1:1 ratio, sometimes less than 1, but never double (some have been born with extra controllable appendages but it's few and far between).

Therefore, only a higher, more generalized, processor could handle operating 2 or more distinct beings.

If only our cells could talk.

in reply to Oka

Until a certain brain body ratio - You can remove half of a brain and it can rewire itself to control the whole body. If you connect two brains to the same body what will likely happen is they will redistribute the work of controlling the body among themselves and work like one brain.

As Labour continues to plan on cutting benefits, a new National Institute of Economic & Social Research report concludes that the UK has one of the weakest social security 'safety nets' in the developed world... alongside a low-wage labour market, the economy ensures the poor stay poor. Now Labour plans to make that worse!

As Max Mosley, one of the reports author sums it up: 'We are neither delivering prosperity through high wages nor security through welfare'!

Disgraceful!

I wonder how many will delay their start date at their new job long enough to collect back pay and then quit.

Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone. Hugs all round. Happy Thursday.

It looks like being a promising (if cold) day here today, which is a good thing for us as we have a family funeral to attend.
We will also be seeing the nephew who got married last summer, & who has already walked out on his new wife to have an affair with someone he met at his job. We don't know what we will say to him - all our sympathies are with his poor wife. She is a lovely young woman and doesn't deserve this.

in reply to Will šŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆ

@AncTreat5358
Thank you. We canā€™t get our heads around it all. The next time we see the nephew will be Christmas. We want to tell him what an idiot he is, but itā€™s not our place to say it. Thatā€™s for his parents.
He didnā€™t even try to stick around & make it work. He will be a bad bet for anyone, going forward. And yet - in so many other ways we couldnā€™t think of a nicer, kinder young man. Itā€™s confusingā€¦.
They must have spent many thousands on their big flashy wedding , & are now saddled with the debt & no marriage to show for it. And it will take his poor wife a long time before she can trust anyone again.
in reply to Lydia T. Pott

It certainly sounds like a confusing situation where it's difficult to make the best choice.

A perfect example of good software. Enter email, enter password, welcome to federated encrypted chat messages. Simple. Easy adaptation too. Invite a friend using either a friendly invite URL (referral link) or Qr Code, they enter their email address, and password, done. This is easier to use than WhatsApp or Signal. It is called, Delta Chat, and it works with your own email. #WhatsApp #Signal #DeltaChat #Fediverse

I believe I can confirm that Vivaldi Webmail works with Delta Chat. šŸ˜‡

in reply to Linux Is Best

The 1 thing I would change is when clicking on "new profile" is the option to use your own email, instead of signing up for a new Fedi provider, should be viewable right away, and not hidden under "other".

Make it transparent and obvious. It truly is the best feature. Keep this simple. You want someone's Grandma with zero technical skills to have this front and center.

Update: That Ugreen cable worked like a charm to connect the PC to the XDR. Full 6K and HDR

And yes Cyberpunk looks other worldly even though my PC sounds like a jet engine

I admit I am jealous.
I am not a fan of Cyberpunk. But now I think about it playing favorite games on 6K Pro Display XDR looks pretty sweet.

You should make a proposal. If you see they need turning around maybe they see it too just donā€™t know how. They might be just desperate enough to accept your tenner.

WELL...in a surprising turn of events, I will own a brand new (paid, nothing weird) Bambulab X1 Carbon.

I won't be using it until February, but I wanted to enjoy the christmas discount (I know they have other discounts during the year, but now it was a good time to buy, rather than reaching february and discovering I have to wait until agust maybe?...)

In any case, I can't fucking believe it.

Then it was a bit of Fusion time:

Adding the twist after making the piece flat was tricky, took me a while to figure out the sweep WITH twist.

But there it is.

in reply to Nixie

There we go.

The AMS will be fully extraible for excellent access (no chance for the whole thing to topple, with the 20+kg of concrete in it)

I only need to find a carpenter with a rable saw that can cut this plywood into my required size.

That plywood has emotional value/attachment, so I want to use it, rather than get new one. I brought it with me from my old-old job, as a gift of sorts from my boss (can I take this? - "sure thing")

It has been used as table for years and I appreciate it.

in reply to Nixie

šŸ™‹ Not a carpenter here, just a guy who moved into an old house that needed lots of care and owns a jobsite table saw as a result.

If you're anywhere near Southeastern PA, US - reach out.

Regardless, watching this thread progress has been cool. Keep up the awesome.

in reply to Peter

@phpete Thanks a lot! shame I am in southern Spain, but it would have been cool. šŸ„²
in reply to Nixie

šŸ˜†
Yeah, I suppose even meeting halfway would be... problematic šŸš£.

Be well!

in reply to Nixie

In the end, I wasn't able to find somewhere I could carry the big panel to cut, so I ended buying some half decent 15mm plywood for this, because I could get it cut in the shop.

Also bought one ikea monitor riser so I can tuck the keyboard under it when I take out the laptop. Somehow I thought I remembered those being sold already varnished, and got surprised when I found out they weren't.

Just gave everything a varnish coat so tomorrow I can install it.

This entry was edited (1 day ago)
in reply to Nixie

Everything is a spacer if you have enough copies of it.

The first supports are glued AND screwed down (I already removed the eccess glue, no worries).
Then, attach the rails tho those (that had been previously drilled) and using the improvised spacers and double sided tape, adhere the top supports.
Drill and remove the tape, then install back in place.
Aply some glue to the top supports, fit the top then drill, countersunk and screw in place.

This shit ain't going anywhere.

This entry was edited (14 hours ago)
in reply to Nixie

I'm really glad I used a thinner plywood. After finishing the install, there were about 5mm of clearance between the top part and the AMS.

I may end up adding a front cover, even if just for the aesthetics of it.

youtube.com/watch?v=BHvYN1Xvpsā€¦

in reply to Nixie

As per the monitor supports, I had bough some little feet for the left one, not realizing it would then make both parts sit flush, so I added one of the screws for that bit of extra safety (so it can't be pushed sideways and off the table).

Being able to hide the keyboard and mouse inder that feels really nice, altough I would really like to cut 30mm off of that depth, and maybe some form of aesthetic trim, but I have no wood router to try the latter.

It's good enough for now, tho.

in reply to Nixie

Ooh, nice risers!! 8- o

I like the bent-wood look & the light-colored grain!

And connecting the two makes a sturdy work & storage area!

in reply to Saguaro Lynx

@SaguaroLynx I wish I had the tools to build them myself, unfortunately I don't so I had to buy an ikea Vattenkar laptop stand, and just mount it in an unusual way.
