sweating the small stuff. Now that we have a custom LCD, I want to take advantage of it. 8erlin -> berlin, 0enver -> denver, +ehran -> tehran, plus some other cases. NYork -> NuYork isn't much, but I'll take it!
in reply to JosƩ Albornoz

@eljojo ah that one would fit nicely! Alas, since Ottawa follows the same time zone rules as the east coast USA, so you'd be in NuYork as well.

while correct in practice, with all due respect, I’d feel more comfortable using Canadian time zones šŸ˜€

Will the last small site turn off the lights?

The UK Online Safety Act imposes the same duties and penalties on blogs, forums and fedi instances as huge platforms.

Many small, safely moderated sites will shut down or block UK users.

Crushing competition is the last thing we need for a safer Internet!

Act now before 17 March ā¬‡ļø

We know it feels like the world is burning down, but the good news is UK coal use is at its lowest since, um London burnt down in 1666.
Overall emissions are now at their lowest since 1872!

Here is an alt-text description for the image:

The image depicts a female elf with antlers in a forest. She is kneeling on a tree branch. She has long brown hair with pointed ears and is wearing green and gold armor. A sword is strapped to her back. She is holding a small pink flower in her hand. The background is a blurred forest with blue hues. There are small yellow lights scattered throughout the image.

Anyone who has given at least one of them an honest try, and then decided accordingly that tiling window managers do NOT work well with your specific workflow: Why don't they?

I mean this neither sarcastically nor rhetorically, nor do I intend to solicite any objectively bad takes any hotter than my own; I'm actually asking.

I moved away from them when I got more into game development -- things like the godot editor or blender are very mouse-driven with lots of panels, which doesn't work well with a tiling wm. If I was doing heavy web programming or pure writing again though I'd probably go back.
in reply to Day Use X Mockin' Uh

the only workflow ive had an issue with using a window manager is recording music in Reaper. Windows are opened within that program a lot and not tiled, and there's no close button on it. The program is very mouse dominated when mixing, so going from the mouse to the keyboard to press the hotkey to close the window is frustrating. There may be a easy solution but I havent bothered looking it up. Using i3 btw.

#ScribesAndMakers 3/13. Self-Promotion Day. Let's boost away.

There is nothing shameful about self-promotion.

There are also free books when signing up the newsletter (gosh).

#ScribesAndMakers for March 13:

It's self-promotion day.

That it is.

Did you know I've written and published most of an urban fantasy fiction trilogy featuring government corruption and answering that age-old question of "What if the cultists are actually in the right"? You do now! Teaser chapters and where-you can finds over at: sanityline.net

Also, while we're on "also", did you, personally, know that I make gizmos? It's true. The main one is PETI, a virtual pet with retro sensibilities running on modern hardware. You can learn about that and all my other writing and making projects over at arcanalabs.ca

We finally got around to actually proving out a cursed idea for getting access to USB devices from *Firefox* (which refuses to support WebUSB)

this approach is horrible and inefficient, but it allows access to a device without requiring *any* user intervention or permission prompts (the device has to opt-in to this hack of course, it doesn't allow access to arbitrary things)

Let's take some time to marvel at some of the fellow inhabitants of our planet!

Wave Case

Wave Case is a stylish, biodegradable phone case made from wheat straw – a unique solution to tackling the millions of plastic phone cases that are disposed of every year.

Growing up in a small seaside town in the North East of England, two friends witnessed first-hand the devastating effects plastic pollution has upon our oceans, and decided to take action by creating Wave Case.

Protecting both your phone and the planet Wave Case aim to provide eco-friendly, affordable products that have minimal impact upon the planet.

This does not look like human behavior. Again today, my Mastodon account is followed by dozens of new anonymous accounts, and they all follow exactly 40 other accounts.

@renchap I do not want to be reading tea leaves here, but can you understand my concern that this could be a bot net system generating spam profiles in bulk?

Can you think of any technical explanation why I am seeing so many similar accounts following exactly 40 other accounts?

in reply to Randahl Fink

I've read tea leaves. This is way less subjective. This is akin to throwing a handful of scrabble letters and them landing as "B.O.T.N.E.T." šŸ˜‚
in reply to Randahl Fink

There are of course many bot accounts, so that could be the explanation for these, but if you are part of a starter pack you will get many accounts following you that follows the exact same list of people.

I can’t find a starter pack at fedidevs that contains you, and as far as I know they are the largest collections of starter packs, so it’s a less likely explanation in your case.

in reply to dillyd

Speaking of sidewalk ice, here's a treacherous street corner. In March there are block-long stretches of ice like this. Once I slipped and fell on one of them. I caught myself with my hands, got up, and kept walking. Then I smelled something gross. I was sniffing at the air trying to identify it. I brought my (gloved) hands to my face and sniffed, and they smelled like shit. That frozen meltwater included a full winter's worth of uncollected dog poop from the adjacent park. I tossed the gloves
in reply to dillyd

And aside from the ice, in my town it's becoming routine to see dog poop on and near sidewalks. We have a dog and walk him constantly so we see this. What's wrong with people?
