Following on from yesterday's post, in the evening the tradesperson returned to the house next door. Our kitchens face each other and there is only a low fence between them. When I was doing the dishes, I looked up and we momentarily locked eyes 😳

I didn't want to close the blinds, as he may have taken offence (according to my warped mind), so I finished the washing up with my head down for the entire time. I simply could not risk making eye contact again! 😬

I made a new crocheted peanut basket for the little birds last night since the one I made last winter got very shabby. It’s made from 18 of those flimsy plastic supermarket produce bags.

i love icewm it's my absolute favorite wm since many years now with several osses.
ok, my puppylinuxes have jwm of course but then with zentile for tiling windows at startx.
but definetely icewm is my No 1. i still use my first configs with few changes depending on os and programs installed.
in reply to HHGΒ²TGΒΌΒ²Β°

@toot Absolutely agree. πŸ’― #IceWM is the only one that being extremely lightweight also has system monitors (network, RAM, CPU) implemented by default at sight all the time in the taskbar. For some reason, that tool has become hard to find. It's really a perfect WM for the minimalist ones. ❀️

okay, so, Warner is the definition of a centrist squish. having him say he's voting no is good. this compulsive talking point about the 30 day extension is garbage though. just vote fucking no! let the GOP figure out a bill you can vote for.

RE: bsky.app/profile/did:plc:ri2qk…

in reply to Noah Berlatsky

If it's "we won't vote for cloture on the main bill but we would on a 30-day extension to keep things going, and for some reason Republicans won't," it's a good talking point once the lights go out in a shutdown. If it's "we'll vote for cloture and ask realllly nicely for 30 days," that's a fail.

"New Quinniac poll:

If there's a #shutdown...

32% blame Dems
31% blame Republicans
22% blame Trump

That's a majority blaming Trump and/or the GOP. Hang tough, Dems.

Note that only 22% of independents would blame Dems for a shutdown. 34% of them would blame the GOP and 22% would blame Trump, a total of 56%. A shutdown is clearly likely to be worse for Republicans.

In short, the vast majority of those who would blame Dems are Republicans already."

I know there’s a lot going on close to home, but if you can, keep half an eye on Syria which is in an incredibly fragile place of transformation right now.

Tools are continually evolving - what are some of the oldest tools or techniques you use and what are the newest?

A3: Hitting things with hard heavy things is probably the oldest tool technique I use, closely followed by poking things with a pointy thing. The newest has to be relocating electrons in a semiconductor as I design something for 3D printing.

A3 Oldest tools and techniques? needles and thread, hand sewing: prehistoric.

Newest tools and techniques: anything digital, including hand drafted PostScript polygons for piecing, all the social sharing and learning streams from Mastodon to YouTube to fabric art blogs; petroleum based fiber for fill and felt, Clover needle threader cutters (20th c I'm sure).

That's not an either/or situation. It's a both/and situation.

This is the point at which I stopped reading an article about some guy who is the latest grifter to hop aboard the "Boys/men are having a crisis!" think piece, publishing, and self-help gravy train that is revisited nearly every decade. πŸ™„

Yeah, the irony of the whole "men's issues" thing, is that they're overwhelmingly caused *by* patriarchy and misogyny.

They just don't want to reason a single layer deeper, which would reveal that the thing they are upholding in supposed furtherance of their interests, is in fact *the very thing* that is causing the issues *they* are complaining about.

This is one of those things that once you see it, you can’t unsee it, so most people just refuse to see it. It’s the thread that unravels the entire tapestry.

Q2: @MakersHour
What 21st Century development in tools, materials, or other equipment, has changed your making the most?

A2: I think the biggest change for me has to be the huge improvement in cordless power tools. It doesn’t feel that long ago that I was using a hammer and rawlplug tool to make little holes in masonry for fixings, and carrying a 110V transformer around job sites to run corded power tools when hand tools were not quick enough.

For some time, I've mainted this:

xteddy.org/gcc-analysis.html

It updates daily, quite happily.

But it uses mongodb. which when compared to something like #duckdb blows.

So I'm going to migrate the backend, and rewrite it. From Perl -> golang (most likely).

The frontend uses c3js for it's charting library. If anyone has any suggestions for alternatives, do say!

I am also aware of evidence.dev which looks interesting...

I should say that the page I maintain is static.

in reply to Thomas Adam

Re: charting libraries, I like this one a lot: github.com/leeoniya/uPlot

Not sure if it fits your needs, but take a look. It is quite small, fast and simple. Coincidentally, I used it with Go, which is a language I appreciate a lot.

I expect I won't be the only person here to say: #3DPrinting

It's pretty revolutionary being able to turn out small custom parts for all sorts of things.

Also an honourable mention to modern #microcontroller platforms and tool-chains. The fact you can just grab something like an ESP32 module for a couple of quid and rapidly have custom code hooked up with sensors, relays, etc and wifi connected is pretty amazing.

A2. Sulky laser printable self adhesive water soluble transfer paper for sewing.

I am not 100% sure it's 21st century but I learned about it in the 21st century.

Also social media, for showing off, sharing, and occasionally learning techniques from video posts.
