Is it "AI" or do they think it's a solid decision to give their customers a dose of freakish body horror whenever they finish a lesson? I couldn't get a picture of it, but the last time I opened the app, there was a brief flash of Duo the owl screaming and looking like this emoji 😱 . I wish I were joking.
@secretsloth They updated the app literally as I was talking to you, and when I logged back in to do my daily lesson, now you can't practice to earn hearts at all anymore, you have to watch ads. I am not down with this. I've got a 3000+ day streak like an anchor but I need to give up the habit and figure out some other way to learn I guess.

It's unbelievable how routine surveillance in private spaces has become for so many people, I really don't get it.
And it doesn't take much imagination at all to consider these recordings (soon) being used by an autocratic government in bed with the surveillance companies, for exactly the same purposes as the bad old days of the DDR.

In other pinball news there's a sub-$1000 home-use two-thirds-scale pinball up on kickstarter which, honestly, they're probably not gonna pull that off. But if they did, it'd be REVOLUTIONARY. Like, that would be SO good for pinball.
Pinball's big problem is its cost, everything flows from that.

Now this new $1k machine is made by one of the Arcade1up people (y'know, those cheap-feeling toy arcade machines at costco) so it might well suck, but the crucial question is HOW MUCH is it gonna suck? 'cause if it only sucks a little bit, if it's like 60% as much fun as a $5k machine but it costs $1k, then honestly we're cooking
And if we can harden a $1k machine to be an arcade-ready $2k coin-op, then that can go out at 50c play rather than $1 (increasingly $1.50) and that REALLY opens things up for pinball to become more accessible to more people

had a friend that sold some random 90s Bally pin he got out of an abandoned bar for like $15k to some dentist. This guy then sent it to an old guy that runs a straight up arcade machine racket, who charged him a bunch more money to make it look slightly cleaner, and then added a bunch of gaudy LEDs in it. That went into his freshly built pinball annex on his mansion. Pinball machines deserve to be free, not in some secret lair.

Yes. It is an absolutely necessary part of Rust maturing as a language.
Currently I have no issue - I'm not using Rust yet generally wish it well, but some of the issues hindering adoption are that it hasn't been standardised, and there is only one compiler.
Of course, C/C++ is (mostly was) not any better here - some compilers as you well know were better at parsing and were more feature laden than others.
Still, it amuses me that Rust will inevitably run into exactly the same shortcomings as every other programming language in existence.
Trump talking about dividing up “assets” between Ukraine and Russia is, in part, a conversation about transferring *human beings* from the rule of one state to another like chattel.
I have yet to encounter anyone arguing for peace through concessions to the aggressor, Russia, who grapples with or even admits that those concessions entail the transfer of human beings as “assets” from one state’s rule to another without their consent, as if we’re talking about European princelings deciding the fate of Silesian peasants over glasses of claret and not actual living human beings with their own desires.
