In the wake of news that the New York senator had postponed his book tour amid controversy over his vote for a spending bill, dejected Chuck Schumer superfan Sean Angston told reporters Monday that he couldn’t believe he had dropped $10,000 on a VIP party package.

could be worse, little duck; I recently learned farm ducks have had their immunity system bred out of them for countless generations because an immune system "wastes" calories. So whatever the duck equivalent of the sniffles is an immediate death sentence lest it spread to the whole flock.

Windows is blocking… the Internet… from using the Internet? 🤔
in reply to mcc

AFAIK these are entirely because it's attempting to open a listening socket on a non-localhost address, which may be needed depending on the specific VPN protocol in use? (if you disable it, it's the same as the edge router blocking unsolicited connections, which is probably the case: the VPN has to do keepalive/hole-punch or fall back to TCP)

We’re hearing that Republicans will soon bring back the SAVE Act for a vote. This bill is a blatant voter suppression tactic that could block millions of Americans from voting by imposing unnecessary and harmful citizenship verification requirements. so i got this little guy on loan. someone wants me to dump it. what do you think it is from? 🧵
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

here they are, nestled into their proper sockets. i've also moved W2 and W4 to configure the board for this.
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

with the Kickstart Eliminator PAL installed in the daughterboard, my modifications have worked! we've skipped the Kickstart screen and the computer is waiting for the Workbench disk!
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

now for the hard part, reverse engineering this PAL. i wonder if the PAL equations *for the original, stock A1000* have been published...
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

and they have; looks like Commodore published them. there are a few scary typos, so I'll have to read through this carefully.
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

my idea is to use the DuPAL "Peeper" mode to manually walk the PAL through various states. but since i already know the original equations, i just need to look for anything that *has changed*
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

after a few hours of work, i've figured out that the differences are fairly minor. i've probably made mistakes, though.
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

the tricky part is that this PAL doesn't just control the write protect feature of the RAM, but it also controls the chip select of the motherboard's ROM chips. so by changing this chip, you can tweak the Amiga's memory map!
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

the Kickstart Eliminator PAL uses this as part of a clever trick to move the kickstart RAM down to a lower address (by 256K). this lets you use the RAM for programs while making room for the new 256K of ROM installed on the motherboard.
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

ok, i've programmed up a test PAL. i'm using a GAL16V8A. i've checked it out briefly with the DuPAL to make sure it behaves reasonably. (earlier i tried it with a different GAL16V8 and it didn't work at all, and i'm not sure why.) perhaps it has to be a 16V8A. speed grade should be 25ns or faster.
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

it works! it is asking for the Workbench disk now, totally skipping over the Kickstart disk prompt!
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

so this is very cool. i still need to test that the RAM expansion feature works. to do that, i need to track down a program called "Addmem" because the RAM shows up at f80000 and is not contiguous with regular system "chip" memory. (oh yeah and the custom chips can't use it. but at least it can be used as a RAM disk or for software that knows about fast RAM.)
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

someone reminded me to try and dump the PAL the traditional way, by putting it in a device programmer and selecting the "READ" option. d'oh! this one wasn't even locked. 🤦‍♂️
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

so that gave me the JEDEC file, but i kinda want to see the equations, so i'm feeding it through AMD's PALASM.
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

that just dumps out the raw equations like this. i need to do search and replace so that it makes sense.
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

minor differences. these would have prevented the RAM expansion feature from working, so i'm glad i checked.
in reply to Tube🏳️‍🌈Time

and here it is: the Amiga 1000 Kickstart Eliminator!

Tesla dropped LIDAR from their cars and is relying on just camera visuals for their self-driving feature. That’s a big problem. Watch this comparison between a car that incorporates LIDAR vs a Tesla, and see the Tesla slam into the “pedestrian” again & again.

The tests include a tromp l’oeil wall, which is probably silly, but the other tests are valid.

The image depicts a woman seated on an ornate chair, dressed in a vibrant red tunic with long sleeves and a white undergarment. She wears a white head covering and holds a large sword with a cross-guard, resting it on her lap. Her right hand is raised, and her eyes are closed, suggesting a moment of rest or contemplation. She has a checkered pouch with tassels hanging from her waist. The woman's legs are crossed, and she wears brown boots. To her left, a partially visible figure in an orange and red tunic stands, holding a sword. The background features a banner with triangular flags in various colors, adding to the medieval ambiance. The overall scene is rich in detail, with a focus on the woman's attire and the surrounding elements.

Good read. Argues that renewable energy is expanding rapidly, especially in China, and less energy is needed for more modern devices such as LED bulbs. Fossil fuels are on the way out.

"The US is taking a big risk by doubling down on fossils and combustion cars. It may find in the 2030s that it has achieved the worst of all worlds: left on the sidelines of the global electro-tech economy, while at the same dependent again on imported oil and gas.

The image is a four-panel comic strip featuring two characters. In the first panel, a character in red armor with a hood is holding a device with a skull on it, and a larger armored figure stands behind them. The red-armored character says, "So many millennia has already passed... And yet its machine spirit still... SCREAMS!" In the second panel, the red-armored character repeats, "And yet its machine spirit still... SCREAMS!" The larger armored figure asks, "What does it sound like?" In the third panel, the larger armored figure's helmet is shown with a speech bubble saying, "RAGE." The final panel shows the red-armored character and the larger armored figure standing next to a large bulldozer with a speech bubble saying "RAGE." The background is a simple gradient, and the comic strip includes a Patreon link at the bottom right corner.

@TJHob Ah, for people like you (and us), there's plenty of abandoned farmsteads in the area, very similar to ours. Those cost (a little) more, because the land is valued more than an old log house. Few here want to restore those, they all want fancy new plastic houses with circulating hot water so you don't have to wait 5 seconds for the water to get warm when you turn the tap on 🤦‍♂️

Those usually appear on the market in a few weeks when the weather gets more photogenic 😀

ha, well it's not like ai can do this, so we're saf... what?
