This is what autocracy looks like:

US Senator Jeff Merkley asks Trump's pick for ambassador to Canada, if he believes in freedom of speech. He does.

Merkley then asks if people inside Canada should be able to disagree with the Prime Minister of Canada. He agrees.

Merkley then asks if people inside the US should be allowed to say something Trump disagrees with, and you can immediately sense, that the ambassador gets uneasy, because in an autocracy, that is not allowed.

Holy hell, this guy is in SO far over his head. He's not a lawyer, but he's demonstrating here a complete failure to articulate probably the most basic principle of US democracy. He's not originally from the US, but he was raised here, from age 3, and should fucking well know better.

So which is he? Appallingly ignorant? Hopelessly immoral and not honest enough to admit that? Or a gutless coward?

@jimcarroll I'm not getting into Vim vs Emacs, Gnome vs KDE, Debian vs Rhel vs Arch or any of their siblings and children fighting amongst themselves.

But systemd is the most cursed, bastardized, overcomplicated and overcompensating crock that has ever been forced upon Linux users. (AI is still a choice, after all.)

So those of you who've known me a while might remember over on twitter the whole #makergate thing where I threatened to take legal action on a UK company trying to trademark the term "makerspace" for a product... the product was a storage cupboard... all these years later I am in a #makerspace and

Another aspect of the housing crisis:

For newly qualified teachers & nurses living in a flat share is often the only viable option; across England in around half of Council areas, a one-bedroom flat is unaffordable on their pay.

If you want to retain newly qualified staff, they need to be able to move from a model of student accommodation (a shared house) to something reflecting their privacy & welfare needs... we need better (affordable) housing for key workers.

Useful piece. Solar panels are largely cloud managed, and now in The Netherlands alone create the same power as 50 of our nuclear power plants. If you switch this 25GW on/off remotely, the consequences could be huge. And we do not regulate these cloud platforms at all: dw.com/en/how-hackers-capture-…

I was afraid this would happen someday, so I took my solar panel installation off the WiFi. No more pretty pictures on how much power I generated, but the solar panels work fine without.
in reply to Bas Haenraets

My panels are also offline, but I still monitor them. And it is a bit sad that this requires you to be a geek, because we could have also built it this way that you don't have to go via the cloud. berthub.eu/articles/posts/the-…

#WritersCoffeeClub March 20. What was the most writing-related fun you’ve had?

Visiting assorted locations that appear in the German folk tales I have translated Some examples:

1. The Hibichenstein rock pinnacle in Bad Grund, said to be the home of the dwarf king Hibich.
2. The Teufelsbad ("Devil's Bath") near Osterode, from which the Devil and other grotesque figures occasionally emerge to prey on sinners.
3. The Wegsmühle mill near Clausthal-Zellerfeld, where a lone maid allegedly killed 11 bandits who sought to plunder the place.
4. The Brocken, the highest mountain in the Harz range where witches gather on each Walpurgis Night.

And if you support me on Patreon, you can help me reach my dream of becoming a full-fledged adventurer-folklorist and combine my translations with travel writings and photography of these places! 😁

I translated an article on Bernard of Clairvaux from the original Klingon (German) to English for a pastor friend of mine. He needed it for his PhD thesis. I learned about a fascinating piece of church history and theology. Fun was had by all!
