@TheGibson I can't even imagine. Except that unfortunately I kind of can these days.

We often complain that modern products do not last. However, I bought an Apple keyboard in 2009, and I have typed on it close to every single day for 16 years, and it still works.

This is the way. πŸ’š

@mookie yes. This model is with AA batteries. The newer Magic Keyboard from Apple has a built in lithium ion battery instead.

About 15 years ago, I watched as Scientologists gave an award to a guy who claimed hyperbaric chambers could cure autism. A few weeks ago, a 5-year old boy was incinerated in a hyperbaric chamber while getting treatment for ADHD and sleep apnea skepchick.org/2025/03/child-di…
in reply to Rebecca Watson

A expensive private high school here in Australia recently purchased a second hyperbaric chamber, so the kids could recover quicker from their Rugby Union games.

We reminds me of aa nice anti-vaxer lady who sell scuba "Therapy"

"Scuba Therapy to people with special needs, such as Quadriplegics, Paraplegics, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Lyme’s Disease, Dandy Walker Syndrome, Hypotonia, Fibromyalgia, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Motor Neuron Disease, Spina Bifida, Autism, Down Syndrome, PTSD, Amputees and all others who have the desire to learn to scuba dive.

We have seen autistic children concentrate, focus, gain confidence and do activities their parents thought they would never do."

Similar sorts of claims and conditions. We don't even have the bacteria that causes Lyme's disease in Australia ticks.

in reply to Rebecca Watson

It does have legitimate uses like for helping burn victims heal. Unnecessary time in an oxygen chamber is basically tempting the same fate as the deceased Apollo 1 astronauts. It really needs to be regulated for legitimate reasons in a highly controlled safe environment. If I owned a retail space, a tenant wanting to put in a 02 bar would get a stern no from me.

Thanks for the explanation. It's actually cool that you have an impact report.

I haven't read it yet though, because `Ctrl-F palestine` returns nothing. What am I missing?

No reporting on Palestine whatsoever from May to Aug 2024 tells me I don't need to read the rest, yes offense.

You are the cable / fiber internet installer, and you are asked to use the pre-existing drill holes. How do you feel?

All these wholes were previously made and used by Charter Spectrum cable in the past. The outside hole goes into the basement, and the inside hole comes up from the basement into the living room.

Possibly one of the most important machines you've never heard of. This is Vaucanson's metal cutting lathe in the MusΓ©e des arts et mΓ©tiers in Paris.

This is credited as the first precision metal cutting lathe. From this device every modern metal cutting lathe can trace its history back. From the prismatic ways, to get carriage, lead screw, and cross slide. Even the interchangeable cutter on the end of the cross slide.

From this lathe, modern precision mechanisation began.

One of those days when I'm really happy with how a story turned out! I worked hard to understand the crippling effect of DRM on your right to back up books and audiobooks you've purchased and wrote an in-depth reported piece about it: lifehacker.com/tech/you-can-re…

For this piece, I interviewed @cyberlyra, whose blogs on opting out of Big Tech are just awesome. And I was also able to interview one of the strongest voices against DRM, Cory Doctorow @pluralistic. (1/2)

Bot or not? To prove you're human, look into this 8-inch orb from a Sam Altman-funded startup: pcmag.com/articles/bot-or-not-…
in reply to PCMag

Looks less trustworthy than the Linux-based voting machines we got here.

For the voting machines there are a lot of measures made to confirm their security, like no internet access, limiting what each machine have access (like one machine only have access to voter info and other only have access to vote info), and even a black box testing event open to all parties to scrutinize and verify.

For this machine, you just need to believe that it's not just encrypting user info using a key only the developer knows and even if they can make the code open-source, there is absolutely no way machines you can be sure those are running the code analyzed (same for voting machines). While black box testing could remediate this limitation, it doesn't look like it's possible in this case.
