Here are my notes on putting the brand new Gemini 2.5 Pro through its paces - I'm very impressed: it did extremely well on image recognition, audio transcription and returning accurate bounding boxes for creatures in a complex photograph, plus it rendered a pretty solid SVG of a pelican on a bicycle

New: Fediverse Report 109

This week, an essay about #Bluesky's proposal for setting user preferences on their accounts. This allows people to indicate how they want their data to be handled off-protocol. I wrote about how the #fediverse can improve on this, using its strengths of many different communities, each with its own culture and values.

Also:
- Next week is the digital conference @fediforum
- A research dataset to compare Threads and Mastodon users

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron yeah, but that does not cover everything. Especially such more interesting cases as the mastodon threads research dataset that was just released.

Regardless, the essay is about who sets the default values, and that this decision should be delegated to server admins, and not made by software platforms such as mastodon itself

in reply to Connected Places

Mastodon asks the user after sign-up what their preference is. And of course different platforms can handle this differently, e.g. if Threads has no expectations of being able to participate without appearing in discovery feeds, they would default to true.

@kr0n
in reply to Ernesto Acosta

@iam @kr0n
in reply to salvari

in reply to Gabriel Viso Carrera

@iam @kr0n
in reply to Ernesto Acosta

in reply to Gabriel Viso Carrera

in reply to Ernesto Acosta

@iam @kr0n
in reply to salvari
