As a lot of people like @pluralistic were talking about gig work for nurses lately, I realized I did not yet share my recent publications here, which makes my phd research finally available in English. I research care platforms in Germany and talked to care workers about why they work self-employed and combined this with data from a web crawl with data of 2000 worker's profiles. My findings show: who actually uses platforms and why. It's available open access: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.11…

Just been to the Danish premiere of "Ada & Zangermann" - the movie. (ada.fsfe.org)
It struck me it had quite a bit of similarities to @pluralistic 's "unauthorized bread".
Turns out, not only was that story part of the inspiration. Cory also helped in the initial production of the book.

So if you're looking for a version of Unautorized bread, targeted from about 5 years (and with a much lighter view of the future) check out the book and/or movie!

Move Slowly and Build Bridges, by @rwg, is available for preorder global.oup.com/academic/produc…

I don't think I'm quoted heavily in the book (my own doing) but I have talked with @rwg a lot about this book and believe that nobody else has done or could do a better job recording the history of the fediverse

@rwg literally read through all the old Social Web Working Group meeting minutes to make sense of what happened and interviewed a lot of people

It's gonna be a hecc of a read

Glyn Moody reshared this.

in reply to Christine Lemmer-Webber

FYI, there’s a pretty awkward-looking typo in the book description there. Not sure whether that’s something @rwg can control, but might want to point it out to OUP.

Everyday life in Arpora, Goa: At the same time every night, this cow comes to the same shop down a side street off the main road, where the owner gives her som vegetables. It’s been happening for years and the owner gets dirty looks if the food doesn’t come out.

The State Department has said they have revoked visas of more than 300 students. They have been terrorizing hundreds and aim to terrorize hundreds, if not thousands more.

Faculty on here: how are you protecting your international students? Are you connecting with local immigration defense groups? How are you protecting them from being snatched off the street?

Your students aren't safe in little blue enclaves. This is happening in NY, Boston, LA. What plans are you making? How are you using citizen and white privilege to ensure your students aren't abducted by ICE terrorists?

Faculty, postdocs, and other grad students are going to have to protect your international colleagues. We certainly can't expect most universities to do so.

This is the way everyone should be thinking about everything. Instead of pointing out the dumb ass lies, mistakes, hypcracies, etc. of the admin, THIS should be the conversation. What are people going to do and how? There's so much we can do. The underground railroad took time to setup. We should probably be planning (within reason) for complete collapse tho tbh. What could we do if we really believed that's how this was gonna go?

this is the surface of a hard drive platter. on the right side, lasers have been used to apply a microtexture, forming a region where it is safe for the read/write head to land without crashing or sticking (stiction).
in reply to Tube Time

Oh, interesting. I was musing a few days ago that it has been decades since I'd had to park the heads of my hard drives.
I'd noticed that some modern drives had an unloading ramp, and they all seemed to automatically swing to it when the drive stopped spinning. I figured there was some magic going on there.

What happens when you think you recycle but local service just dumps it in an open #landfill where it ends up in the soil or flushes out to the sea?

Thinking that individual consumers can solve global problems is very misleading. The vast majority of pollutants comes from institutional neglect not individual.

The Abandon Harris Crowd Is All Of A Sudden Very Quiet

dailykos.com/stories/2025/3/27…

in reply to J H Libby

@jhlibby "If Hussein hoped Abandon would sway the Dems' stance, did he think through the downside for Muslim Americans if he failed?" This assumes Hussein is done attempting to sway the democrats. DKos shows he is no longer attempting to influence the 2024 elections. Well, of course he is! Hussein may be fighting a longer fight in which pressure on the 2024 election was only one step.
in reply to mcc

@jhlibby I think your logic— describing Trump winning as "the consequences if [Mr. Hussein] failed"— also assumes the collapse in Harris's support is due to Hussein's mesmeric influence, and not Muslim voters in Michigan simply reading the news (and for that matter, Harris's own statements) and reaching a conclusion negative for Harris.

The image features a meme with a top section containing text and a bottom section with an animated character. The top text reads, "me when I encourage my players to search for alternative solutions and they start seducing everything." Below this, there is an image of an animated character with a shocked expression, blood coming from his nose, and a mustache. The character's eyes are wide open, and his mouth is slightly agape. The background is a clear blue sky with some clouds. The bottom text reads, "I am a victim of my own success." The character's expression and the blood suggest a humorous exaggeration of the situation described in the top text.
