I despise American commentators like Scott Jennings who peddle the Trump lie that tariffs are helpful, because they force companies to move factories to the US to avoid tariffs, and then there will be no price increase.
When a factory is placed in Mexico instead of the US, that is because it is cheaper to make a car in Mexico. If the same factory is then moved to the US as Trump wants, the cars produced will become more expensive to make. This will obviously raise consumer prices.
Perhaps economists on the thread can chime in with their favourite #FreeTrade and specialisation arguments. For the rest of us, we have to dig out #AdamSmith et al.
