New babies! Toulouse (orange), Marie (white), Duchess (tortie with a tail), and Beriloz (tortie with a little nubbin).

They are about 1 week old and even though they can't really see or hear, they are very fierce and hiss at everything!

Our household has been sad the past couple of days because our kitten Marilyn snuck out of the house on Tuesday and was missing for two nights. We were overjoyed this morning to hear her little meows at the back door! Welcome home Marilyn!

Would be awful if hair happened to these beautiful bedsheets, innit?

The top-rated non-Bosch model on the Consumer Reports list is from Ikea, of all places. No app or internet required — and I bet if they did add that, it would use open-standard, local-control Zigbee like all their home automation.

I'm not sure who actually makes it for them, but it's also worth noting that it's the only one on the list rated 5/5 for "gets dishes clean".

OpenAI is using Studio Ghibli-style memes as an ad hoc promotional campaign for its new image generator—despite Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki's famous hatred of AI. Sam Altman even made his X avatar a 'Ghiblified' portrait.

Disgracing Miyazaki is part of the point: It's more proof to the industry's biggest boosters that they have won—that they're free to use, appropriate, and commoditize art however they see fit.

I realize that language is strong, and for a long time I have been skeptical of this notion that 'AI bros hate artists' or such—but seeing the response to this critique, which on the other site really actually has too often been literally 'Fuck Miyazaki', what other conclusion are we to come to?
in reply to Brian Merchant

Here's how one artist, Reid Southen, told me he feels about the AI Studio Ghibli trend:

"Just a short drive outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, the quaint city of Kannapolis is seeing a rapid economic revival. The city, which was traditionally known for its textile mills, has recently transformed into a research hub in the for Southeast."

Telling. Quantity of male versus female dialogue in best picture films of recent decades

(by @puddingviz)

in reply to Information Is Beautiful

One interesting line on that is that The Hurt Locker had no women speaking (or too little to show up), and was directed by a woman.

Anora, which just won Best Picture, probably did pretty well on this scale, but still had a lot of male dialog.

in reply to Information Is Beautiful

As for the years being off by one, some people refer to the year of the Oscar ceremony rather than the year the movies were made. Not that I have carefully checked this chart.

New from Rumeysa Ozturk's lawyer:

Rumeysa hasn't been accused of any crime

And "DHS has not produced any evidence" that she did anything unlawful.

Rumeysa wasn't able to speak to her lawyer for 24+ hours & not until after she was in Louisiana
— despite a court order that she not be moved from Massachusetts

@pluralistic : "Any good investor knows that anything that can't go on forever eventually stops. The only question is: will that halt is a controlled braking action, or a collision with reality's brick wall?"

Given the aggregate overarching greed permeating the CEO class coupled with the collective venality of the politicians profiting from granting those CEOs carte blanche, my money's on Brick Wall.

I don't think we make it out of the 2020s without some form of 1929 crash.

A Pandemic, a gilded age with high stock prices, a Smoot-Hawley style president, rise of fascist governments... It's not the same song, but man does the tune sound familiar.

And a president willing to ride this through pain. Willing to tank the US dollar and stock market to make these tariffs work. An ailing superpower.

I don't see away this ends smoothly.

in reply to Gaëtan Perrault

@gatesvp There is one critical difference. Most of the world will no longer give a toss. China will spin a US crash into the excuse for their self caused economic pain, Europe will be quite content to see a crashed USA become a Russian style low value resource export economy and India simply doesn't have to care any more.
It's going to suck but for Africa, India and to a fair extent China it's not a big deal once the waves die down
in reply to Gaëtan Perrault

@gatesvp The major difference between the coming crash and the previous one is that in 1929 the wealthy threw THEMSELVES out of windows.

Excellent piece from @zephoria from Tech Policy Press arguing for "interventionism" - a form of pragmatism that seeks to recognise the uncertainty in socio-technical systems while ascribing importance to legal, policy and social mechanisms that counter-balance techno-solutionist narratives.

Needed a barrel to usb cable for a solar powered camera I installed at the new place. (Not solar powered by default) Not my proudest work but it that will be the first soldering done in the new place. Yes it looks like I forget the heat shrink but I had to electrical tape it either way because I haven’t moved over the (surprisingly large) heat shrink box yet.

Oooh - Jesse Welles is new to me - very talented!

"Red"
youtu.be/TPHafKOd9A4

[Edit - Lyrics]:
[Verse 1]
I got me a red house and a red car
Runs on big red batteries
It used to be blue 15 minutes ago
But it turned red just for me

I got me a red horse, and I ride it
I got some blue friends, they’re the best
We used to fly around the world on a big jet plane
They called the Lolita Express

[Verse 2]
I got me a red tie, and it’s 10 feet long
And it matches my red hat
I got me a red bird, and a red fish
A red dog and a red cat
And I got me a red pen, and I use it
I got a big red chainsaw too
My red friend likes that white powder
It makes his arms do weird salutes

[Chorus 1]
When the war gets here, we’re all gonna hold hands
All the Baptists and the Catholics
All the Marxists and the Fascists
When the war gets here, we’re going get on the level
Everyone looks a little bit nicer
When you finally meet the devil

@scruss so much talent, and such quick turnaround with songs/lyrics for timely events - amazing, my uncle who has been a lifelong musician (from the 60's, writes his own protest/commentary songs) who also didn't know about Jesse says he definitely evokes Dylan and Prine "feels" for this era.

In all seriousness. this mural was done by Mel Depaz, AngelOnce, and GoopMassta.

Depaz is quicky becoming my favorite mural artist in LA, and it's so cool to start to recognize aspects of her visual style when I'm travelling around Los Angeles!

Here's a short documentary on this mural being made: vimeo.com/477296008

And I've never had the privilege of meeting the chick, but you can find her site over at meldepaz.com

So, after some inspiration from Polymaker and Alex Swavely on the birdsite, I decided to fix my PolyDryer plug that was chewed by Bentley the bunny by designing my own in @FreeCAD, complete with an attached plug and an opening that holds the PTFE tube nice and tight.

Used Recreus filaflex 82A.

FreeCAD reshared this.

in reply to Dan the 3D Printing Dad

I'll likely try another in 95A TPU, since a lot more people have that than the really soft stuff. I suspect it'll be a lot tougher to install it (the 82A gave some resistance), but if that is the case, I could tweak the parameters in my CAD some.

Once complete, I'll release it on Printables - watch my account for updates.

in reply to Dan the 3D Printing Dad

Okie dokie. The replacement Polymaker PolyDryer plug model is now published to Printables. #3Dprinting #3dprinted

thats actually a very useful tool! Its pretty awesome its now possible to build it without real coding knowledge.
