I wrote about how the user experience of encrypted messaging tools is sometimes just as important as the underlying tech. PGP, Jabber etc were not accessible. Signal makes it seamless. But the UI still has issues that can lead to mistakes 404media.co/behind-the-blog-fo…
This case shows a rare instance where a more modern encrypted communications app has a Ul which can pretty easily lead to mistakes. A solution as | highlight in the piece is people using the nickname feature, which admittedly | need to make more use of. Maybe there's a way Signal could prompt someone to add a nickname once they start communicating with someone who shares a display name with someone else they've already spoken to? | have no idea on the feasibility of that, and presume Signal has thought about it. And if not, they probably are now after this big mess from the natsec officials. Or, as Jason did after we published that piece, he changed his profile picture to a photo of himself so it was much easier to see which Jason Signal contact corresponded to that Jason. That requires more people uploading profile photos to Signal though, something that privacy conscious people may not do, even if it's probably fine to do in most contexts. Maybe that should be a good bit of etiquette to help others if you are something of a Signal power user?

Years ago now Signal founder Moxie Marlinspike once said (paraphrased) that he used to be happy getting PGP-encrypted mail, because it meant getting email from somebody who cares about email security, but now it just saddens him because it means he's getting email from someone willing to tolerate the entire PGP experience.
