Contagious Ideas

I have to say, the AI bracket isn’t doing half bad this year. Its Elite Eight is one pick off from perfect, and that’s only because it hallucinated San Diego State winning a first round game between two schools that aren’t San Diego State.

Georgia's "foreign agent" law, modeled after Russia's, has been used to persecute opposition and arrest dissidents in just one year. The ruling party is replicating Putin's playbook, but at a faster pace. buff.ly/LcC6nZ0

“A Wholly Inaccurate Picture”: Reality Cop Show “The First 48” and the Wrongly Convicted Man

Edgar Barrientos-Quintana spent 16 years behind bars wrongly convicted for a shooting featured on “The First 48.” The Minnesota attorney general’s office effectively alleged that the show shaped the case instead of the case shaping the show.

Yesterday I went to visit the site of the Hardy Tree, in Saint Pancras Old Church yard. The author Thomas Hardy was an architecture student in the 1860s when the station and railway lines were being built, disrupting multiple graves. Hardy was tasked with doing something with the gravestones, so built a strange circular monument with a tree at its centre.
I read a year or two ago that the tree had either died or been damaged and had to be removed - this was the first time I'd been back since. Its roots are still entangled between the headstones.

I love this, and I am in awe at the community getting behind this grueling work, instead of fun hacks.

This is the kind of things companies can mandate but is harder to convince a community to do.

Saw this poster the other day and thought of my recent advice to the kid. "If it's an important photo you want to keep, print it out and put it in a box."

Arbitrariness begins where we accept that anyone at all can be sentenced without a fair trial and denied their basic rights to humane treatment.
The moment we begin to see such a procedure as anything other than a fundamental breach of civilization and only individual cases cause us to lose our temper for a moment because we feel they are unjust, we have already fallen into the trap of not fundamentally questioning the violent abuses.

Got it backwards.

Cruelty leads to incompetence.

Hate addles the brain. On average, subscribing to bigotry costs a person a third of their cognitive capacity.

I was literally locked in a mall at one point, though I made sure it did not last overnight.

I was in the restroom at closing time and someone locked the restroom door without bothering to check if anyone was in there, so I was trapped. After beating on the door and yelling with no response, I turned to plan B: I took a lighter out of my purse, made a wand out of toilet paper, lit the end of the wand and held it up to one of the overhead srpinklers. The firemen let me out.

I’m old enough to remember when Mozilla had a Mastodon instance.

That's nothing, I'm old enough to remember when Mozilla promised to never sell my data.
in reply to Michael Stanclift

Seriously though, what does Mozilla the organization need to advertise a Spotify page for?

Who’s sitting around wondering what they are listening to?

Edit: oh it’s their podcast. Well that’s even more infuriating. If only there was an open standard that enabled that technology 🧐

"Yo, we're like Open Source n' shit, check out this long list of corporate monopoly platforms we support!"
in reply to slyborg

@slyborg "Expect we don't support Mastodon, those people criticized us like Proton, man."
in reply to Shadow, First of His Name

@shadow @slyborg the frustrating thing is Mozilla did indirectly support Mastodon for a short period, aside from running an instance. They funded a code security audit a couple of years ago — that’s probably wasn’t cheap.
in reply to Michael Stanclift

@shadow The dreaded pivot. Baker's gone now, and they loaded up with ex-corporate types that are thinking about how to do the OpenAI thing and monetize so they can cash out somehow. For all the vaunted "disruption culture" in Si Valley, it's been groupthink there for really decades, right now you make money with ads and AI training data (maybe crypto depending on where you are on the grift scale). It's more likely Mozilla will put in a crypto wallet than a federated social media interface.
in reply to MrCopilot

@mrcopilot yeah, and have a way to have clients subscribe to a feed of data and syndicate the data to them.

It’s too bad nothing like that was ever invented.

I saw a jar of black olives marked as “Product of #Canada” on a grocery website last night.

I somehow doubt that 98% of that product was made in our borders.
