This is really concerning, not just the raid but that Indiana University has literally disappeared XiaoFeng Wang (a full professor with a named chair position) from their web sites. The attacks on Chinese-born faculty were bad in Trump 1, but this I worry is way way worse.
Yes. We have no idea what crime he's been accused of (or if he was even accused of any crime), so it's hard to comment on the arrest and raid. But the university instantly memory-holing him is just weird, and definitely concerning.

Hosting the public at Makespace today as part of the Cambridge Festival. Observing people trying out my light sabre I think an electronics improvement would really benefit it. People keep switching it off by mistake while exploring the buttons. They also often turn it off and put it down as soon as they realise it plays a tune on boot up.
I think if I replace the power on/off switch with a latching power circuit so it can’t be turned off then people will play more. It could power itself off automatically when it no longer sensed movement for a short time. This would stop kids who explore all the buttons turning it off mid play, and I think if there is no way to turn it off when it starts up people would be less likely to hit the off switch and run away as soon as it fires up.
for some background, this was built in the 90s for the Atomic Weapons Establishment and was used as the light source for a high speed drum camera. it was sold off to a dealer who thought it was worth millions, sat on eBay unsold for 8 years, until the price got slashed. it has been in a warehouse all this time and we're getting it up and running now.

Hey I got TrueNAS Scale up and running, added three old crappy disks, created a pool, dataset, SMB share, and connected to it. I only glanced at the docs and mainly figured things out. Took a while though...
TrueNAS is definitely a lot more complex than OpenMediaVault, but also seems much more powerful, but will I need/use that power?
I definitely needed more help during my first setup. Installation however was quick. Then I searched and watched about 2 h youtube videos. Especially the plethora of access rights settings is still confusing as hell for me.
The HP Z420 has enough space for 6 drives so not counting the boot drive I could put 5 large hard drives in this thing... and always add some USB drives for additional backup or whatever.
I also surprised how quiet the Z420 is. The fans (3 of them) are not loud at all. (Granted, it's mostly idle I guess.)
I'm still debating between TrueNAS, Proxmox and clean Debian + Docker. I have experience only with the latter and I would need some software that helps me add software raid that is flexible enough to add disks to the pool in the future.
@Andres I'm still confused by Proxmox... I got OpenMediaVault right away, it made sense. TrueNAS is a bit more complex but I /mostly/ get it, but should read up more for sure.
I do run a few containers on my OpenMediaVault NAS, which was pretty simple to get set up.
and if it goes sideways how much effort is it to recover? I did a diy NAS once. I also did a synology nas. I now just have a desktop with a big drive in it and no special hardware/OS/software. Backup/ restore/ maintainence/ understanding are all simpler and better matched in complexity to the needs I have.
@poleguy Right, good question! The thing I do like about OpenMediaVault is that the drives are just ext4 so I could mount them on any (Linux) computer. For the drives in TrueNAS I don't know how recovery would work... still learning this stuff. That's why I do plan to have external USB backup drives as well as redundant systems. (Including one off-site.)
I have been looking at a FOSS replacement for my Synology NAS.
#truenas scale was definitely recommended but I am inevitably drawn to a code-as-infrastructure fetish.
I also considered #nixos with ZFS but I think it’s time for high-availability capabilities in my homelab. So I COULD do NixOS with a k3s service.
Ultimately, I’ll probably instead run a cluster of machines with #talos Linux and get that lovely NAS functionality back (and then some) by running a #rookceph image.
I built a NAS running TrueNAS Core a couple years back. Just recently went through the upgrade to SCALE and it was a breeze. The machine probably has more power than necessary for basically just being an NFS that my Proxmox host connects to. But it is nice having those extra resources since my Proxmox machine is old and running up against its limits.
*What if you actually BUILT fake generated, halllucinatory objects like these, and then had a "survival" TV show where human beings tried to use these pseudo-devices to survive

Is it normal for a university to memory hole a former professor's pages? I thought the norm was to keep scholarship present, but possibly mark it as an inactive page.
@adamshostack This is the part that's especially concerning. We don't know what the arrest was about (and whether it was even for a crime or an immigration matter), but it's hard to imagine what reason there could be for the university to scrub its website as if he never worked there.
Either the government put pressure on them or the university was involved in whatever it was about.

If there's a criminal case associated with any of this, I can't find it in the docket for the Southern District of Indiana (or the DC or Eastern VA Districts, either, which are also venues for this sort of case).
It's possible that I missed something (damn you, PACER search), that it's not yet listed, or that it's still under seal. Or that there's no case filed.
I should also note that there seems to be essentially no confirmation of anything, and the rapid pace at which this is moving suggests quite a bit that's yet to be explained.
- Accepting a tenured job elsewhere, failure to disclose grants, etc, all can be grounds for involuntary revocation of tenure, but that process is lengthy.
- A professor voluntarily resigning to go elsewhere isn't usually kept secret.

He has always been a hard-working play by the rules colleague. I do not know what he is charged with. I am not confident that he is being provided full due process for a named chair by the University. I may be wrong, but I do not have the information that would provide that confidence right now.
He has been an excellent colleague for 20+ years. Being under investigation is not a crime. I have been asking for information. I do not have it. Unless he is found guilty in a court of law or I get significantly more information, I would like to say I am standing with him. But I do not know how to. So right now, I will say that I have been proud to have been his colleague for two decades. I do not even know if he is still my colleague? He is on administrative leave.
