What boggles me more is that even stone-age people knew Vitamin A is toxic. The livers of grizzly and polar bears contain so vitamin A they will kill you if you eat them. This is pretty well known to anyone who hunts/forages... Like, you know, the kind of people who are into 'simple homespun solutions'.
What they've actually proved here is that even as science-hating narcissists they are moronic failures who have only survived because society has taken care of them.

Indeed, and that's just the storage medium for the bits side of the problem. As I know you know, successfully interpreting them will be another question even if the bits themselves survive.
Jpg and TIF are simple enough that they're probably safe for some small number of decades. Camera-specific raw formats, maybe less. But beyond that, it's a crapshoot.
I think of the print as the finished product for my artwork, but not for snapshots, which makes them especially vulnerable.
@mattblaze Over the past couple of years I've been scanning a few thousand photos taken by my ancestors, going back to around the year 1900. The B&W prints and negatives are straightforward (other than some of the negatives being larger than my neg scanner width).
But the color negatives are much more difficult: apparently the dyes for the different colors fade at different rates, and I have to manually fiddle with the RGB brightness/contrast/gamma to try to make them look right.
@mattblaze Photos can degrade over time. One of the glass plate negatives was broken into two pieces. This one includes my grandfather and great-grandmother, as well as some great-uncles and great-aunts.
The line of fracture is apparent. I don't remember if I scanned the two pieces separately and stitched them together with the "gimp" program, or if I put them together on the scanner.
These glass-plate photos are cropped top-to-bottom to the width of my negative scanner.
