Art can help remind US and Europe of special relationship, says director of reopening #Frick Collection - theguardian.com/culture/2025/m… nice try, but no....
in reply to Glyn Moody

With Greece asking the BM to return the Parthenon Frieze, perhaps USA museums might anticipate being asked to repatriate some of the Barons Robbins.

I've always been a fan of z80-based releases of Gauntlet. However, both the original collection of mazes and those in the "Deeper Dungeons" add-on were a bit limited (most dungeons were duplicate of others).

Now I've created a tool that allows adding your own mazes and creating a new collection that can be loaded from the original game.

@Linux Heard. It was life and death for me. Though I suspect our food may cost less with Harris right now. These tariffs will fuck up everything for everyone, even the ones that voted due to high prices.

@Linux You see he is now threatening companies affected by his tariffs to not raise prices, and eat it from their bottom line?

@utopiArte @myrmepropagandist @Yogthos I didn't consider this, but I think the tilt is 45 degrees. This would mean the right slope is actually mostly flat and the left slope is actually about 45 degrees which is still tricky to navigate, but doesn't defy gravity.

There’s misinformation in one of the quotes.

“Similar story today in Cincinnati. Gay couple arrested for abusing 5 foster boys.” — the couple is not a gay couple. The wife’s name is Matthew, probably making the commenter assume that she is a man.

This is cool. The Guardian recreated a searchable climate future risk tool (wildfire, extreme heat, drought, hurricane, and coastal flood) for the US that was developed by FEMA but deleted by the Trump administration’s ‘climate’ purge.

Irony: the deep sea mining scam is based on a 1974 CIA cover story—Project Azorian, the attempt to recover the sunken Soviet nuclear missile submarine K-129. They built a ship, the Hughes Glomar Explorer, which was described so convincingly as a mining ship for seafloor manganese nodules (not raising sunken missile submarines!) that it spawned imitators and grifters.

Just like the CIA hunt for Osama bin Laden killed Polio vaccination in Pakistan.

Fedi.Video's PeerTube site has been updated to the latest version, hopefully it is now easier to navigate and more accessible:

:PeerTube: fedi.video

There are three tabs at the top of the screen:

🏡 Home - Default page, it has lots of info about PeerTube as well as handpicked playlists

📚 Discover - Videos organised into random topics

🆕 Browse videos - This has two smaller tabs, recently added videos & trending videos, pick whichever one you want and start scrolling 🙂

We're not big on Mother's Day in our house, but I did receive this.

Me in Pokemon form. How wonderful and strange to be captured so completely in two sentences.

P.S it usually says 'retreat' on a Pokemon card 🤣

My post about #Newpipe is now available in English!
If you're interested in using a free and #OpenSource app instead of the official youtube app, that doesn't track you, doesn't show you adds, allows video and audio downloading, and even playing with the screen off (great for saving data and battery), go and install it now!

You can follow content from #YouTube, #Peertube, and more.

So youTube is doing the serving in the end? That's neat, but they will probably break it eventually if it's popular, yes?
in reply to myrmepropagandist

yes exactly.
Well actually YouTube is trying to prevent such tools to work but then patches come out shortly after to counter that.

You can also try #freetube on desktop that does the same thing as #newpipe.

I made a video about it recently, it's in French but you have English subtitles available if you want to have a look: videos.ikacode.com/w/sBiBSgidz…

Plastics are amazing materials. Plastics can do things that were impossible before they became common in manufacturing and design.

In some ways this solution (where they use a little less plastic and lie) is better than the much more common plastic laced paper that tries to pretend to be "green" At least with this mess, you can still separate the plastic and paper.

Our school tried to replace plastic cups only to buy fake "green" paper ones with a plastic micro-lining.

Ideas:

* Offer refill service at your store. Let people bring their own container and fill it up for a modest discount.
* Make the bottle a nice object that people will want to reuse and take returns.
* pay your store employees more, train them more, offer more on-site services make the value of your brand more about service than objects. "the people there KNOW skin care"
* Close the store and make an education center for ants and local insects instead.

My heart isn't in it in the same way as of late.

"How can we do better?"

Just stop. That's how.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

@futurebird Is there anything useful that can be made with old grocery bags? They don't appear to recycle well.

Can't this crap at least be made into 3D printing filament or something? Is it too low polymer? What do we need to blend in some cornstarch?

in reply to myrmepropagandist

@futurebird
My partner found a hair care line that sells their products in the usual little pump bottles, and also in giant 1L refill bags. The idea is you buy the bottle first, then keep refilling it indefinitely.
Way less plastic waste, I have seen it a few times but I wish everyone did it.
The Curl Shoppe.

@futurebird waaay back (in the 1990s) the Body Shop offered this for their best selling shower gels.

@futurebird I think there's a store here in Sacramento that just has bulk products and refillable bottles to use with them. I keep meaning to look and see if they have a big refill drum of Dr. Bronners peppermint soap

in reply to myrmepropagandist

so if the object is not Instagramable you will trowit away?

Stop using paper. Plastic is almost eternal. The solution is very easy. Stop throwing away plastics. Use it until they last, inherit them is possible. If you switch to paper, have you think about how much paper will be wasted? Do you even know where paper came from? If that resource is done, we will al be done; instead, once the fossil fuels are done, we at least will have plastics.

This entry was edited (3 months ago)
in reply to myrmepropagandist

@futurebird Yeah, plastics are amazing - so much so, in fact, that if they disappeared overnight millions of people would die; we'd be unable to maintain things like food & medicine logistics. This is why "just ge rid of it!" is overly simplistic; we need new materials & processes to replace them.

Also, molecular-recycling plastics is easy, i.e. pyrolysis, but environmentalists hate it for perpetuating plastics & oil & plastic industries hate it because of course they do, so... 🤷

in reply to myrmepropagandist

@futurebird Plastic lined paper is so much worse than well-chosen pure plastic. (Though nothing beats reusable, even if that is also plastic.)
in reply to myrmepropagandist

Properly recycled plastic is not all that terrible. Nor is say aluminum cans (which are dirty to mine, but exceptionally easy to recycle since they melt easily and are reformed into other aluminum objects easily).

Also most brown paper is actually colored, since non-bleached paper is more gray than brown (speaking of greenwashing again).

very thorough post, but confusingly uses HSV for many of its examples, which has a lot of perceptional issues itself... OkLab would've been more appropriate I think
