Ha! This is interesting. What it's basically saying is that Malay lost the word for earthquake (which is still extant in other Austronesian language cousins eg Indonesian languages for example, like Javanese) that we had to re-import it from Sanskrit because we have so few of it 😅

I can't think of many good examples now but a lot of stuff from Lenovo for example comes to mind. Things like Project Crystal* or all those rollable/foldable OLED laptop/phone prototypes etc. Often it feels more like a technology showcase/exploration rather than something they'd plan to sell.

in reply to lucie lukas "minute" hartmann • • •japan got a lot of unique hardware in the 90s/early 00s. even their cell phones were specific to that market until like the 2010s. it must have made some financial sense to target stuff to the home market and then if it's a hit try it in other regions.
but then again sony was riding high. they probably didn't mind losing money on some weird new concepts because other divisions were making so much money.
