@martin I tried swapping out the trackball on my Pocket Reform for a silicon nitride one but it didn’t track as well as the one it came with. I think a woo woo crystal would be a bit too big for this use case.

It was always true that Judge Dugan was going to be able to complain about the politicization of her case, but here Trump 1) claims as fact that she "protected a criminal," which is not charged and stated as proven and 2) ties it repeatedly with his complaint that judges uphold the law.
in reply to emptywheel

Note, Trump IS increasingly having political appointees argue these cases, w/a top political appointee getting routinely humiliated in the law firm cases. That exposes some senior people to ethics complaints, IMO.
in reply to emptywheel

Note: I should clarify something. Dugan was charged w/concealing a person from arrest, so not far off from Trump's description. But she would have treated the immigration warrant as misdemeanor (it may have been felony bc he was deported once); she was presiding over criminal trial.

The ONS is struggling to account for prices at the checkout that are reduced by loyalty schemes such as Tesco Clubcard;

this matters because if such data had been included (as ONS has done for one month last year) Consumer Price Inflation would have been 2.8% not the reported 3.1%.

I am sceptical that the BoE really shapes its policy on the basis of headline rates of inflation, but still this overstatement may have impacted interest rate decisions!

@chewie

Well, that's sort of the point, Tesco which has a major part of the supermarket sector also has a high take up of their loyalty scheme - when taken along with other supermarkets' schemes, this is not an insignificant segment of consumers, it mat account for over half of them....

So those prices are actually 'enjoyed' quite widely

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May

Maybe, but that's still showing an artificially low price, as loyalty card users are in effect "paying the difference" in other ways (their habits / data).

❗️Almost 90% say they don’t trust him, frustrated with how he’s handling the war and his reluctance to offer real security guarantees.

I don’t really like supportive tooling for writing code. I work in vim and prefer bazel (with occasional support from a language server client for things like large scale renames).

I’m a reasonable person I swear to god. I know that’s just a preference, my coworkers who prefer IDEs or whatever are equally valid, and I try to help them where I can. If they say they can’t use generated files because they don’t autocomplete with their IDE, or if they want 4 repos instead of 1 because they can’t have multiple languages at once, I’m cool with that, really, I try to be accommodating, I try to help where I can.

in reply to Natalie

that said, my coworker who writes his code with chatgpt is just not working out for me. I mean for one thing the code is just a mess: meaningless parameters passed everywhere, error checks that can never trigger because the implementations of the interfaces don’t throw the errors that are being checked.

but the main problem is that it’s not *designed* at all. every single one of these things is like Alton Brown used to say about unitaskers. this code passes the (generated) unit tests and that’s it. trying to use it for anything that it wasn’t explicitly and specifically designed and tested for is like trying to use a pork puller bear claw when what you want is a fork.

it’s not extensible, it’s not maintainable, if you want to add a parameter or tweak an implementation detail the only reasonable call is to rewrite it from scratch.

And what’s so frustrating about that is that it LOOKS fine at a glance. It even looks fine in code review, one chunk at a time!

Just 101 days into Trump's presidency, 52 percent of Americans now say, Trump is a "dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys American democracy".

— That even includes 17 percent of Republicans.

Remember the “sleeping giant” ascribed to Admiral Yamamoto in the wake of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor? Something like: “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant.”

There’s also a great image from LotR: The Ents waking up and finding they are strong.
