"Since the start of the pandemic, 1.2 million people in the United States have died due to COVID-19, and 7.1 million people have succumbed to the disease worldwide."

In context, USA has 4.2% of the world's population, but has had 16.9% of the deaths from COVID-19. With about 4 times the global death rate, ours has not been a first-world response.

This is a graphic from a paper on ants but it looks like something I drew in a boring meeting.

(The point it's making is an interesting one, all ants can do all jobs, and you don't need to inject them to make it happen, they will just switch if the job isn't being done. But, I think they found a way to trigger this switch in the paper which would be ... huge, honestly. )

I will not comment on the "ant muscles"

Is everyone interested in ants just... weird?

Test fitting boards in a STEP export of the current rack chassis using Dune3D for the first time.

It's definitely got some rough edges but I think it has potential. Doesn't feel as polished as SolveSpace but the STEP import is a key feature I've found missing in other tools.

But I can't figure out how to do boolean operations on imported step geometry, even if I say it's part of a solid body I'm not able to e.g. do an extrusion to cut off the lid of the chassis so I can see inside (somehow setting to wireframe did this, which I think is a bug but lets me see what I need lol)

in reply to Andrew Zonenberg

Ooh, I've been wanting to hear how Dune3D is from someone actually using it to make stuff!
in reply to Cassandrich

@dalias Initial impressions: running it via flatpak is a pain because flatpak is evil, but it depends on a GTK version too new for my debian so that's currently the only way I can use it. I have to set an environment variable to override some OpenGL initialization to make it start and not fail to compile shaders for some reason.

It's very heavily keyboard/context menu driven, the GUI is quite minimalistic so you kinda have to know what you want to do which makes for a bit of a learning curve.

Many of the default keyboard shortcuts are multi-key sequences which is not something I'm used to. Guessing the main dev is a vim user lol.

Join us every day, at 9am (Kyiv time), as Ukrainians and others stand and observe a minute’s silence in honor of the soldiers, men, women and children who perished in this savage war.

A touching day. Transported a man who, for the last 18yrs, has been in institutions, hospitals, & shelters. Today I took him to his apartment.

He cried when he entered.

He had his own bathroom, and a table. But his biggest thrill was an alarm clock."I can set my own bedtime and wake up when I want to."

Pepper spray on your shit? When you get home strip that down and drop it straight into the wash. Scrub you and anything you didn’t put into the wash with detergent. If your eyes have it, gently run clean cold water over them for a while.

Pepper spray comes in a few forms. Bear spray is often oil. It offgases for hours (days IMHO). Gotta use detergents to get it out of stuff, or flush it for a long time with water. Pepper balls are often pepper dust, so rinsing and brushing can help.

in reply to McNadoMD

Not speaking from experience, but if it's oil based, automotive/industrial degreasers should remove it fast and are safe on most clothing. Pick up Purple Power at Advance Auto, similar stuff most auto parts or box home improvement stores.

I'm finally going back to edit my (rejected) paper that proved my first (joint) paper was wrong. The referee (whose report led to rejection) was sorta helpful, pointing out some better references, but also in ways that didn't make it easy to insert the new ones quickly. The references are in an area I'm not technically competent in, I was just doing due diligence and pointing to sources for claims. I'm not so fussed whether I was pointing to the original paper or not, or if there wasn't a complete proof in that specific paper of that author set. But it's also a bit of an indictment on the literature of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras and groups that it's sometimes highly unclear where to find things and point to them.

Anne Wojcicki's nonprofit will acquire substantially all of 23andMe's assets for $305 million, the company announced Friday.

Many believe the move will protect the privacy of customers and further genome research vs Regeneron, private equity, or another company buying it. #23andme #privacy #dna
