Coming up on Friday June 20th is the opening of my exhibition "a workshop for everyday technology", the outcome of my residency at the Leitrim Sculpture Center in Manorhamilton/Cluainín, County Leitrim, Ireland.

I love these sculptures. I expect someone has told you about the "Norwich keyboard" already... but just in case there is a concrete keyboard in Norwich, a bit of public art and it's rather beloved. It was made by Molly Sole in 1999 who intended it to be a mystery which for years it was.
It's interesting to think about what these works will look like as they age, and depending on if they are exposed to nature.

Since taking that photo I have since slightly polished the keys which spell my password. I suppose these will eventually corrode, but love the idea that radical openness will exist until then 😀

By working in a factory I mean line work or cleaning, not management. And by factory I mean an operation manufacturing large runs of product, more than could be used in your home town.

When I was a kid, Dad was a Millwright (industrial mechanic); he worked on machines in a lot of factories, as well as things like HVAC and steam systems for hospitals and prisons, etc. Not sure if that counts as factory worker, though.
I did work in a TV factory as my 2nd job, but it was as a junior software engineer, so neither proper factory work nor management. Parents were the first in my family to go to university, so I'd answer chemistry lab for both of them, and going further back, plumber/builder and furniture shop assistant, so I think my recent ancestors sort of avoided manufacturing somehow.
My dad was a chemist too, he worked a night shift in the steel mill to pay for college.
But the mill also helped him get some lab experience since part time he got to work in their lab ... where he discovered he didn't want to be a metallurgist which was his initial idea. He stuck with college longer to get a more serious degree because "metallurgy is boring" ? He's never really explained this I ought to ask him about it more.
I'm the downwardly mobile generation of my family. Multiple generations of my family have worked white collar jobs in manufacturing: R&D, designing manufacturing equipment, etc. I'm the only one that did assembly work & shipped product. The manufacturing job went away; I'd characterize the rest of my career as service industry, primarily in support of R&D.
my mother didn’t. While I don’t think my father did I know he worked as labor in a lumber yard and probably did other manual labor before getting his engineering degree in night school (took 8 years).
My maternal grandmother worked in a factory that wove cotton cloth. That was in Scotland, before she came to the US. Not sure how long, but she talked about it so obviously long enough to leave an impression.
Paternal grandfather learned to be a shoemaker in Sweden. When he came to the US he had difficulty finding work that wasn't mass production; he wanted to work as he'd learned, making a pair of shoes beginning to end. Eventually he found Spalding and made baseball shoes.
in some ways, I miss assembly line work. Once I got used to the routine, I could follow it robotically and use the other 80% of my brain to think about something interesting.
Mom worked at the trumpet factory for a while. Her parents weren’t factory workers but some of my great-aunts and uncles were, and at least one of my great-grandparents.
The closest I’ve gotten was working on the donation processing line at a big thrift store, which involves a conveyor belt and at this particular store was pretty dehumanizing, but I don’t think it counts.

I selected "Other" as in "None of the above", but then I realized: Does farming count? Both of my parents grew up farming, and my grandparents all spent their career "manufacturing" (growing) grain and livestock to sell to food producers. I suppose it could be considered a type of outdoor factory.
