#TIL about @frequency, a federated photo-sharing app;
"I'm trying to be very upfront. Like, OK you're going to have to pay for this service. But I really want to make it as affordable as possible. I want to give you options to pay for your family and friends, to bring everybody in if there's someone that can't pay for it ..."

What I find intriguing about Frequency is that Jesse isn't building an app in the sense of a client for existing fediverse servers. She's not building an app in the sense of a server stack like Friendica or Pleroma that's intended to be the base software for many people's servers.
What's she's building is an app in the sense of a commercial social network service, with its own branded client, revenue model, etc. But interacting with the rest of the fediverse, like FlipBoard now does.
(3/?)
I'd like to see source code published under a libre license for the Frequency iOS client app, before I'd recommend it to anyone. Hopefully that will come as the software reaches a stable state.
But this is an approach I think has legs. Only enthusiasts want to dive into the minutiae of choosing software, host, and client. What most people want is to join a service that combines all 3 with a sustainable organisational model, and get on with using it.

no one trying to break in to your phone gives a single fuck about an 11 year old case in California about warrantless searches

Just discovered a second podcast called Decentered (the name of the @wedistribute podcast). Listening to their fantastic interview with @rabble from Nos. social. Where he talks a lot less about the history of Titter, and a lot more about the history of Indymedia, and his more recent work with decentralised social media;

"A lot of people came off X and went onto BlueSky, and said 'oh this doesn't accord with our values', and I thought that was a huge mistake. Because you've given up the ground, and the good people need to be in the place where people are."

20 years ago similar arguments were being made for appealing to legacy corporate media for coverage, instead of publishing on the web. In both cases, corporate media platforms are being framed as neutral agora, which they are not. They gatekeep who gets to see what, in both explicit and covert ways.
Because of the power of network effects, the "ground" is the *people*, not the platform. Everyone who moves from a corporate platform to a community-centric network makes it easier to do.

There are now exactly 365 posts on my blog. So, considering I've been writing it for twenty years, I have a long term average of one post every twenty days, over all that time.
Some of them are good. I'd go further. Some of them are excellent.

"Money is, then, a necrotising parasite on social relationships, systematically sucking out transactions of kindness and generosity from the economy and replacing them with a winner-takes-all, zero sum game of competitive meanness.
Money is a disease."

Manifesto for a Good Society
"who, precisely, is 'the commune'? Well, exactly the same people as 'the natural, informal society,' of course. What a person is doing when asking 'the commune' for help is not applying to a higher authority, but saying, formally, to the people among whom they live, 'hey! I have needs that aren't being met. Can we fix this, please?'"

"As AI agents powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) become increasingly versatile and capable of addressing a broad spectrum of tasks, ensuring their security has become a critical challenge. Among the most pressing threats are prompt injection attacks, which exploit the agent’s resilience on natural language inputs — an especially dangerous threat when agents are granted tool access or handle sensitive information. In this work, we propose a set of principled design patterns for building AI agents with provable resistance to prompt injection. We systematically analyze these patterns, discuss their trade-offs in terms of utility and security, and illustrate their real-world applicability through a series of case studies."

I’m so excited to see papers like this starting to appear. I wrote about Google DeepMind’s Defeating Prompt Injections by Design paper (aka the CaMeL paper) back in April, which was the first paper I’d seen that proposed a credible solution to some of the challenges posed by prompt injection against tool-using LLM systems (often referred to as “agents”).
This new paper provides a robust explanation of prompt injection, then proposes six design patterns to help protect against it, including the pattern proposed by the CaMeL paper."

Springsteen wrote the song following the killing of an unarmed 23-year-old Guinean student, Amadou Diallo in the early morning of 4th February 1999. Diallo was fired upon by four NYPD plainclothes officers, part of the City's Street Crime Unit (SCU). The officers had mistaken Diallo for a suspected rapist and Diallo had reached into his pocket to produce his wallet containing ID.
