I really do not love the type of advertising that, rather than trying to make people want the product, tries to make people surrender to the product. Rather than trying to work on greed, it reaches for despair.

"ooh our LLM can blackmail people"
"ooh our CEO is afraid of the product"
"ooh our thing is inevitable"
"oopsie tee hee we invented Skynet" you very much did not.

It's software. Can we maintain some perspective here?

in reply to hexamander

Software, even very fancy software, requires hardware to run on.

Hardware requires electricity, cooling, and maintenance. People work around the clock to keep those always-available systems available.

Software is neither inevitable nor autonomous. It is not self-creating nor self-maintaining.

It works because people make it work.

Trump’s claims of “damage” ring especially hollow given not only that Kamala Harris interview transcript showed nothing irregular about the edits but also, of course, the fact he won the election.

Yet Paramount’s woes extend much deeper than a few rough weeks.

One of the nerdiest things I'll ever say is this:

There are multiple small malls here in Bangkok that specialize entirely in electronics and IT equipment, and I'm looking forward to visiting them.

in reply to Mystery Babylon

having been to some of these in Taipei and Hong Kong, I can say they are _hella_ fun
in reply to I am Tully's fierce justiciar

I'm down for recommendations for those two cities, too!

Eventually Taipei is where I might like to live, and Hong Kong is on the "visit as soon as possible" list, with Tokyo and Osaka.

Please, hit me up with malls and stores and sights and places to eat/drink/dance, whatever you know.

I think what I love most about #Superman (2025) is the portrayal of tender, wholesome masculinity.

Gunn’s previous characters like Star-Lord and Peacemaker are compelling precisely because of their "toxic" masculinity. They are trashy macho dumbasses, but their personal growth can be an inspiration.

Superman is the opposite. He starts off sincere, caring, and hopeful, but he's forced to question the source of his wholesomeness, because the world outside is toxic.

More like this please.

Omg what movie is that? Preteen / teenage me feels Seen af. (28:50 "nukyuler". Reminds me of when I saw the pronunciation of sexual reproduction in, of course, a McGraw-Hill textbook as "sek-shul".) youtube.com/watch?v=eqsJAEnHPn…

"Thank you for making this. I hadn't even heard of the first org, the rebranded one. Also gov.uk/government/publications… For anyone else horrified. This is just the Snoopers' Charter again, Is2g.

Literally goes against info security advice over the past 30 years, ffs. Not that the Online Surveillance Act addresses any of its asserted aims, anyway! We need infographics aimed at parents and carers: explain how to active Parental Controls, and describe how their lives will be harder from the Act.

Teach the parents and carers you know how to activate Parental Controls on their devices and networks.
Teach the kids and teenagers (and adults!) you know that their body is their own."
You are allowed to say "no", it's not your fault if someone ignores that, and whatever you feel about your own experiences is ok.

Proton's CEO kinda went MAGA half a year ago, btw. I recommend Mullvad VPN instead.
Keep signing the petition tho. If nothing else, it boosts morale and wider attention on public opinion.

Also... It's nobody's favorite topic, but...

Teach the parents and carers you know how to activate Parental Controls on their devices and networks.
Teach the kids and teenagers (and adults!) you know that their body is their own.
You are allowed to say "no", it's not your fault if someone ignores that, and whatever you feel about your own experiences is ok.
If your story is different, then that's okay too. If you have better advice or resources, please share them.

"Finally, Microsoft is tweaking the so-called 'Second Chance Out of Box Experience' window (also called 'SCOOBE,' pronounced 'scooby'), the setup screen that you'll periodically see on a Windows 11 PC even if you've already been using it for months or years. This screen attempts to enroll your PC in Windows Backup, to switch your default browser to Microsoft Edge and its default search engine to Bing, and to import favorites and history into Edge from whatever browser you might have been trying to use before."

This is another attempt by the MAGA cult to give law enforcement unfettered and unregulated power over the public.

Storing binary data in birdsong is cool and all, but I can’t help but think it would be more efficient if it was encoded in tern-ary

Why do homosexual women have all these fun words like lesbian and sapphic, and yet those of us with expansive attractions are still just bisexuals and pansexuals?

I submit to this queer corner of the fediverse that we should come up with a fun alternative term for those who are attracted to multiple genders or regardless of gender!

Ugh, friends, I’m trying to inspire some fun here. Yes, a bi person can call themselves sapphic and I am one of them. I don’t need a bunch of people informing me of this.

I meant people who are bisexual and pansexual regardless of their own gender identity and regardless of the identities they are attracted to.

The same observation applies to how homosexual men are also generally called gay. I’m wanting fun alternative terms that don’t sound like someone is diagnosing a person with their orientation.
