Would it have made much difference to history ? Sadly no, probably not. There's also an extensive look at medieval attitudes to gender which is interestingly nuanced : sometimes, it was every bit as discriminatory as you'd expect, but not always. Even among the head-lopping Norman magnates there were plenty of supporters who would have been fine with having a woman on the throne... though there were also many who simply couldn't stomach the idea.
