Welp. It had a good run.

Some pictures of the ride. I would have documented it but after taking a somewhat speculative side path after getting kicked out of the construction site I accidentally barged into, I discovered that it was not in fact a path. It was actually a jungle made of poison oak and thorns.
in reply to mhoye

I recorded the ride, hilariously. I’m really looking forward to watching this nonsense.

I’ve made better decisions in my life, but I’ve probably also made worse ones also.

Two paths diverged in the woods, and I, I took one that wasn’t a path at all, and now my entire lower body itches like crazy which is not the difference that needed making.

My best experiences of walking through the woods are walking cross country. Off the beaten track.
Enjoy your itchy legs.
Signs of life, as I say.
in reply to mhoye

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less travelled by,
And I should have worn long pants.
in reply to mhoye

Watching this recording now that I'm home and hopefully disinfected, this is the part of the exercise where a reasonable person might have said, hmm, hmmmm.

Getting here was an escalative exercise from "path" to "overgrown path" to "no path" to whatever this is.

Not sure where this was but the mosquitos loved it.
in reply to mhoye

A wise man once said, never step on anything soft in the forest, never step on anything hard in the jungle.

This was the "get up this hill, I can see something resembling a trail up there" and "ok we're gonna make it" part of the exercise.

If you look at this area on Trailforks, I'm 90% sure that where I was was trudging through that dotted line there where Catalyst used to be, that just... no longer exists. As experiences go, I can't wholeheartedly recommend it. I'm looking forward to my legs not itching, and I should probably look into a bike with gears if I'm going to be stranding myself at the north end of these black-level trails. Doing this on a high-ratio singlelspeed is very difficult.
in reply to mhoye

a reasonable person might have pondered their next steps at this point.

But me, I’m fully with you on the “I bet I can go just a little further” path.

in reply to mhoye

You're definitely getting your heat acclimatization in (cf that GCN video on modern performance you linked to a while back which had one guy riding a stationary bike in a 40C room for an hour, and the pros do this regularly to prepare for races).

Hey, German-speakers! Through a very weird set of circumstances, I ended up owning the rights to the German audiobook of my bestselling 2022 cryptocurrency heist technothriller *Red Team Blues* and now I'm selling DRM-free audio and ebooks, along with the paperback (all in German and English) on a Kickstarter that runs until August 11:

That is absolutely understandable why the text was upsetting. Healing takes time, it is seldom a straightforward process and being in pain and so limited in your usual activities has mental and emotional impacts which add to an already hard struggle. 💕🧡

Actually, my experience is that most drivers are too courteous. They often stop when they have the clear right of way, not realizing that the car in the next lane isn't going to stop, and making the cyclist feel obliged to cross when it's clearly not safe to do so.
in reply to Ormand

@ormand.bsky.social Agreed, many are as you say, courteous to the point of infuriating in the manner they endanger the biker by their ignorance, or unwillingness to act on right of way. But the two guys in the video are anything but courteous and I love to see them get their comeuppance.
