American biotech company Regeneron Pharmaceuticals announced today that it's buying 23andMe,
the bankrupt consumer-genomics company that sold take-home DNA kits.
Regeneron is to pay $256 million in cash to acquire "substantially all" of 23andMe's assets,
including its massive biobank of around 15 million customer genetic samples and data.
Put simply, the genetic information of millions is now in the hands of a drugmaker seeking to mine it to make new therapies,
per the Washington Post, which could be a data privacy nightmare in the making.

Nowinski is the co-founder of the #Concussion Legacy Foundation, a nonprofit group that supports #athletes & others affected by #concussions & #CTE. He recalled many cases of former #football players found to have CTE after experiencing a drastic change of personality leading to erratic #behavior, poor decision-making &, in some cases, #violence that included #murder.
But he warned against prematurely blaming #CTE for anyone’s actions.
“#MentalHealth issues come from a lot of different places, not just from #brain injuries or CTE,” Nowinski said. “But I also know the history of this issue, & it’s something that keeps me up at night.”
Regarding the gunman & his request that his brain be studied for CTE, Nowinski said: “It is critical that his brain is studied because this is a #pattern, right?”
A positive diagnosis would not mean that #CTE necessarily caused the gunman to be violent, experts said. Though people with CTE often have problems with #thinking, #memory & #behavior, there are many factors involved when a person decides to commit a heinous act, said Dr. Daniel H. Daneshvar, chief of #brain injury rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School.
“I would never draw a direct line between someone’s #brain pathology & any specific #violent act because the majority of people who have #CTE never committed anything like this,” Dr. Daneshvar said.
He added that “the majority of people with CTE never engage in violent #behavior at all,” & that just “a fraction of a percent” of people with CTE displayed the type of violent behavior seen in the #shooting on Monday.

Dr. Ann McKee, the director of the Boston University #CTE Center, who has studied thousands of brains of #athletes & others exposed to #brain #trauma, said very little is known about the link between #violent impulsive #behavior & CTE, & that more studies must be done.
“There is damage to the frontal lobes, which can damage decision making & judgment,”she said. “It can also cause impulsivity & rage behaviors, so it’s possible that there’s some connection between brain injury & these behaviors.”
