It would be fascinating to extend this research to people who don’t believe the diseases portrayed are communicable, and to animals that presumably don’t grasp germ theory.
My guess is that it would be independent of beliefs and culture in humans, but I might be wrong. And either way, it would also be interesting to know how widely different species can visually, innately recognise and respond to infection risks.
presumably there is a cost to firing up immune cells otherwise your body would always have them present. So watching a movie of sick people has some cost on your body.
So is it good for you to watch medical movies? If you watch too many do you normalise and so become more vulnerable when a real sick person walks past?
Definitely something to think about, but the fact that are bodies do it isn't too surprising. We're always predicting things. We vomit when people all around us vomit, we yawn when people around us yawn.
