When I first heard Leonardo da Vinci’s words in a PBS documentary this past winter, “The thing that was given to me by the universe was the chance to question it, and that is my divine duty”, I paused the film.
Not just to write it down. Not just to let it resonate. But because in that moment, I felt the full weight of what it means to never have been allowed to see questioning the world as my “divine duty.”
That kind of freedom, that kind of assumption that your thoughts matter, is the kind of privilege we rarely talk about.
I often wonder what my life, our lives, might look like if we, too, had been allowed to treat exploration as sacred. If the brilliance that comes from pattern recognition, survival, resourcefulness, and intuition was valued in the same way as the brilliance that comes from lineage, legacy, and access.
What books were never written?
What art never made?
What systems never questioned?
What futures never built?
All because too many of us were taught that our duty wasn’t to question the universe, but to survive it quietly.
Now, as I move through the world, learning, unlearning, re-learning, I realize that what da Vinci called divine duty, I’ve only ever known as an act of resistance.
