in reply to Simon Willison • • •I'm attending one of the best academic AI conferences (ACL) this week, and the vast majority of papers presented are now from China. I've been to one session where, out of 8 papers, every single one was presented by somebody from that country.
This is my first time at ACL, but other attendees have said that this is not how things have been at previous editions.
The fraction of Chinese participants also went up, from ~30% last year to 51% this year. The US is at 18%, everybody else is single-digit percentages if that.
