I have a trip coming up with 30+ hours of train time. I'm planning on bringing two knitting projects: a shawl and a sweater. (I'll also have downtime on the not-train part of the journey, hence two chonker projects.)

Indeed! My first pair of socks are too big, they are used solely as slipper-socks. That is, in fact, my only pair of socks.
However, I am working on my second pair of socks, and my Cunning Plan is: spiral tube socks. These are socks without heels, done with 4x4 ribbing, which, every five rows, you move one row over, so that it spirals. These were apparently popular to knit for soldiers in WWII, because (a) one size fits most, and (b) when the "heel" area starts getting worn, you can just turn the sock with the worn side up, and keep wearing it.
My thought is, that once I've made them, I'll either make more of the same, or I'll use them to get a better idea of how to make socks that fit my feet (with heels).
