I went to Japanfest this weekend in support of a friend. He does pottery based on traditional Japanese folks techniques and imports and blends teas.

I mostly didn't have time to walk around, but what little walking around I did was somewhat disappointing.

The other artists were great.

There were a lot of imported snacks (Good! I liked that!) but I didn't see much there that I couldn't find at retail in at least three shops local to the venue for a better price.

My friend had some specialty teas, including a high quality Sencha, a Genmaicha, and a Hōjicha. No one else there had teas.

There were a fair number of Anime things related to franchises that are popular in the US: T-shirts, statues, some figurines.

I know, more or less, how I would source the above if I was to pursue this.

I have a lot of these kinds of things as one off items, but not in the quantities or at the margins it would take to stock a booth at a con.

The current tariff situation complicates sourcing some of this stuff a bit, but it complicates things as much for me as it would for anyone else.

It'd be a big time investment to stock up on these things the first time, and then it'd take a commitment to keeping them stocked after the fact. I can't imagine it'd be worthwhile if I was only selling at Japanfest, but if I was going to AWA and Momocon, I could probably make that work.

(I have no intention of doing this, it's just what I thought of after having been at the show.)

Alright, so back to the topic at hand.

My buddy sells tea, pottery, and books. A lot of the books he sells are english translations of Japanese lit, folklore, history, etc.

Mostly these are hard-to-find used books. He does pretty well sourcing these, but it's a fairly high effort task.

One of my recommendations to him was to start picking up some new books (of course, as a bookseller I could help him do that.)

I also recommended that he try to find some vintage Japanese language manga and art books through his existing channels.

Beyond that, though, I'm trying to figure out why things would meet the tone of his existing work while attracting an audience beyond tea drinkers, you know?

in reply to Andrew (Television Executive)

that's why I stopped going to the DragonCon vendor rooms. Everything they had was mass produced crap.
in reply to Shae Erisson

@shapr I'm very much thinking about it from the perspective of "could I make this work better for him" and then also "could I make this make sense for me"

And I think in both cases the answer is "yes, but there are probably other shows that make more since for me to put this energy into."

in reply to Andrew (Television Executive)

what about custom furoshiki? I have a real made in Japan furoshiki but I'd like something a bit larger and slightly more American.
I like the whole cheerful multipurpose wrapping cloth idea.

Relatedly, I'm looking for copies of or scans of vintage Japanese magazines (and, frankly, pop culture magazines from all over the world!)

I'm especially interested in 1970s issues of テレビマガジン (Terebi Magazine) and たのしい幼稚園 (Tanoshii Yōchien) from 1974 - 1976 because they'd have had some Himitsu Sentai Gorenger recap strips which I'm looking for.

But any manga magazines, shonen or other shojo or whatever, would be appreciated.

I've found a fair number of later scans (like this one: archive.org/details/TV-Kun-197… ) on the internet archive.

But yeah, if you have any of these you want to sell, or you have some you want to keep but are willing to scan, or if you have scans of them, I want 'em.

I'm also looking for old wrestling magazines from any country. I'm less interested in those scans than I am the physical magazines. "Old" in this case is pre 2000.

in reply to Andrew (Television Executive)

Hell, if you've got any of the Beetleborg or Masked Rider magazines that littered walmart shelves in 1997, I'd like those too.
in reply to Andrew (Television Executive)

nope, it's been down since yesterday.

Steam and Instagram were also down yesterday, and today I'm seeing outages for Roblox, Discord, and others, idk if related or not.

There's a serious set of outages happening, actually.

in reply to ParenTessaLation

@jakimfett the archive was up intermittently when I shared the link. I had just taken those screenshots and sourced those scans.

It's up and down a lot these days. Ai scrapers, I assume.

CTV did a journalism! In this excellent report, Kevin Green remembered Smith’s 2022 promise to fix health care in Alberta in 90 days. That was 1,070 days ago—are things any better? “Alberta’s health-care wait lists have swelled beyond half a million patients, and the province has stopped counting how many people die while waiting for treatment, creating a lack of disclosure that leaves families and analysts examining the system without answers.” #ABPoli #healthcare

yeah; we could use this money to help children dying of aids, who we've senselessly cut off. instead we're giving it to an authoritarian stooge to boost his poll numbers.

I see the "How One Bad Password Ended a 158-Year-Old Business" story has resurfaced (as a thinly-disguised SpecOps ad).

If a single non-MFA'd password is an existential threat to your entire enterprise ... maybe the problem isn't the intern.

And maybe the fix isn't a single vendor.

In pre-Trump times, something like this from an FBI director would have been accepted without suspicion.

After #Cincinnati #Ohio area Tri-State priest placed on leave due to a "list" of URLs to sex sites found of his computer, police and church officials say no 'criminal activity or wrongdoing' found on computer.

The search of the computer found the configuration file of a malware program meant to block such sites on church computers which had those sites and others in it.

The Cincinnati Archdiocese have been extra vigilant of late after several incidents regarding bad, and even criminal, sexual behavior of some of its priests.
