Is this a good time to mention that even among the left, people *rampantly* use ableist terms like "stupid", "dumb", "moron", "idiot", etc.? These are just the r-word, lite. Try to tell someone it's ableist and they will blow you off, argue with you, call you stupid, or block you -- even people who vociferously oppose the various -isms including ableism. Never mind that most of these synonyms have a long history of being used in particular to describe, insult, and dehumanize non-verbal autistic people and people with intellectual disabilities.

@hosford42 Getting people to reconsider this is gonna require getting people to deconstruct intellectual ableism in general, which is a much harder task than just making lists of no-no words. The latter isn't convincing to most; people need to understand *why*. Gotta get people to question why comparisons to disabled people are considered so insulting in the first place. Similar to making people realize that so many insults towards men are actually insults to women (eg son of a bitch).

I've started using "IQism" as a way to sum it up nicely. Drives the point home with minimal explanation. But yeah, people still have to do the work of understanding why treating disability as inferiority is problematic, in general.

Every person has value. Every life has value. We all matter, no matter what we can or can't do. What we can do only matters because of the human beings we can do it for, not the other way around. Only the choice to willfully harm or belittle our fellow human beings can detract from the value intrinsic to being a person.
