Speaking of sidewalk ice, here's a treacherous street corner. In March there are block-long stretches of ice like this. Once I slipped and fell on one of them. I caught myself with my hands, got up, and kept walking. Then I smelled something gross. I was sniffing at the air trying to identify it. I brought my (gloved) hands to my face and sniffed, and they smelled like shit. That frozen meltwater included a full winter's worth of uncollected dog poop from the adjacent park. I tossed the gloves

A Rare Sighting of the Pelican Eel...

The pelican eel's most notable feature is its large mouth, which is much larger than its body. The mouth is loosely hinged, and can be opened wide enough to swallow a fish much larger than the eel itself. The lower jaw is hinged at the base of the head, with no body mass behind it, making the head look disproportionately large. Its jaw is so large that it is estimated to be about a quarter of the total length of the eel itself.

So, practically. If Canada were to join the EU, what steps would be required? We'd obviously need to apply, like other countries. Certainly greater presence in Brussels.

Would we need to adopt the Euro? I'd think so, but not sure if that is a good idea.

My jointer restoration project, still sitting at the old place. Paused for now, but not forgotten. Was in the middle of this when we finally found the right homestead.

Need to make space for it here first. Preferably with a foundation, so I don't have to move it again.

And then find about six strong elephants to help me load it onto a trailer.

An old semi-DIY jointer built made from very solid steel plates, angle iron and a huge 3 phase motor. The spindle has been rebuilt with new knives and bearings and fresh yellow and green paint. The rest is still old and rusty. A few small parts are resting on top of it. A metal tray for catching some of the shavings sits below.

A web browser should *NEVER* be able to look inside your clipboard without an explicit user action (such as ctrl-v). Honestly, this should not be a controversial statement. Microsoft Edge is one of the browsers that ships this dangerous capability. Here is the dialog you need to hunt for to turn this API off.

The cherry log is resting on the workbench. It's going nowhere on it's own. And it's filling the workbench completely. It's about 30 cm in diameter and 90 cm long.

Two logs and another broken screw extraction later. One log to go. 😤

Somehow my body aches a lot today. I can only imagine how people must have felt after sawing logs to boards 100 years ago. 😫

The large log sits in a cradle made from a long board of plywood on the bottom and two "book ends" which hold the log vertically with screws at each end. The contraption rests on the bandsaw table and a roller stand.
A wooden mallet, a 13 mm chisel, and a slotted screwdriver lying on top of the sawn-off log. In its endgrain, a screw sits inside the wood with its head snapped off, but the wood around it has already been removed with the tools, so it can easily be taken out with pliers.
Seven cherry boards, still with bark, each about 3 cm thick and 90 cm long, stacked with spacers in between them for air circulation on top of the workbench. Another log is standing vertically, resting on the side of the workbench.
The shorter log has been stacked up similarly, and held together with two ratched straps. The ends of the straps are long enough to be tied together, and the log is just about light enough so it can be carried around the neck in front of the body.
