studies show that when a frog attempts symbiosis with a scorpion to carry both across a river from a wildfire, the scorpion stings it and they both drown

studies show that when grasshoppers sit around and make music all day, they do not survive the winter as well as the ants that spend that same time collecting food to store in their nest

studies show that employers prefer employees who double their original investments, and when they terminate the one who keeps the investment undisturbed for years that portion is given to the employee who had originally been entrusted with the most assets

Welcome! A friend’s brother gifted me his extra cards a few months back (probably acquired via similar eBay listings!), and I’ve been totally sucked in. To make use of all the common cards I have, I’ve been building decks for pauper commander: pdhrec.com

Q5: @MakersHour
Most supply chains are pretty long these days. What would have to change to make your making more local?

A5: When I need to buy hardwoods I go to TreeStation. They only take down trees if that have to come down for safety reasons, and then the timber is planked for sale. As they are local, and only work locally, I know that the timber is also local.
I could improve my supply chain by only sourcing my timber from them, but that isn’t always practical.

Q5: Most supply chains are pretty long these days. What would have to change to make your making more local?

A5. This is a difficult one. I’d love to be able to go more local but when I can find whatever I need online and in-stock, without having to traipse around multiple shops, it saves so much time. Even just being able to check stock online and go directly to one store to collect is fab.

If I’m out and about, I do like perusing local shops to see what I can find though.

Q5/A5 long supply chains? To make my making more local I would have to source tools and thread from local surplus or reuse like Seattle ReCreative.

Trump saying his goal is to eliminate taxes for anyone earning less than $150,000 per year is like me saying my goal is world peace. Both are nice goals. And both are equally impossible.

Trump is turning into a department store Santa Claus. He keeps promising benefits without having any idea if and how to deliver them. Heck, he doesn't even care if it happens, provided the MAGA child on his lap leaves with a smile. "Sure, Tommy, I'll deliver a pony on Christmas night."

in reply to Augie Ray

This is like the incredibly wonderful stupendous "Only I Can Fix It" "I Have Concepts of Plan" better healthcare plan and "Infrastructure Week" that he promised during is first stint in the White House and never delivered.

How can anyone vote for or support Trump knowing that all of his promises are hollow? I get the MAGA rage but do any of them really believe he will deliver anything he promises other than pain for others, tax breaks for the wealthy, and power for himself.

The irony of calling someone "tankie" when your entire political project at the moment is to ship as many weapons into Ukraine as physically possible.
in reply to Nick Poole

I wasn't insinuating that being pro Ukraine makes you a tankie, that would make no sense. And I wasn't comparing the conflict in Ukraine to any particular action in the Eastern Bloc. I was claiming that being an anti-communist NATO dick-rider makes it a little silly to call other people a tankie.

in reply to Nick Poole

@JoshuaACNewman fwiw, I don't think tankies are real. I've only ever seen the term applied to internet LARPers or to MLs by people who haven't read Lenin. Which is to say I think there are people that some anarchists would call tankies, but I don't think the people they imagine when they're using the word actually exist.

By all accounts, I'm a tankie 🤷

Danke!

ok so @timonsku visited and soldered his custom multitouch trackpad design for the MNT Reform Next. and it works! i just had to bring my windows 10 VM up to date to run azoteq's config/debug GUI which you can see here, and figure out the correct rx/tx col/row mappings. next step will be integrating the new chip in our open source firmware.

This is a corrupt, dishonest right wing guy with authoritarian streaks who held no political office before.

The big names are struggling

The bookies are having a great Cheltenham Festival. Fact to File is the only big name to win so far this week. Only two favourites won today which has been the trend for this week. It may change tomorrow of course but there is value in looking at the 7/1 shots that will run tomorrow. Today wasn't as successful as yesterday as I only had 1 winner today, ironically that was the other favourite that won today.

Q4: @MakersHour
What is the most technological part of your making and what is the most "low-tech"?

A4: I suppose the most technological is going to be either 3D printing, or the plasma cutter and welders, I have. They are all tools that I couldn’t easily replace if I had to create their purpose from scratch, with no plans.
The lowest tech is going to be a hammer. Interestingly, I seem to have 4 or 5 big sledge hammers and 6 club hammers, as well as the other smaller claw, ball pein, cross pein, and metal forming hammers.

most of it is very high tech really, #3dprinting, modelling, coding, microprocessors and neopixels, all that jazz. But low tech is probably the hammer and paints! #makersHour

in reply to WokStation

@wokstation I wouldn't qualify paint as «lowtech» given the chemical complexity of modern compound.

@webshinra the concept of slapping something that stains a material onto something for decorative purposes is truly ancient, though

in reply to ZoLo 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇳🇴🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️♾️

@zoelocke @wokstation Yes, putting color on stuff is very ancient (cave painting).
But: it's far from what we today call paint either in durability (renaissance belive greek statuary where white because the color disappear completely, and we practically don't have any painting remaining form those times) or aviable color.
I would also add that steel nails require blast furnace, which are not really «low tech».

makershour group reshared this.

in reply to webshinra

@zoelocke @wokstation To answer the original question, I think in my practice, ceramics and charcoal drawing are the most «low tech» stuff I do. Even if as I mostly draw on modern paper, which is not as simple to make as we would thought.

Q4/A4 most and least technological parts of making?

most: digital photography and image manipulation to draft and adapt patterns.

in between: measuring, sizing patterns, reinterpreting pattern instructions

least technological: cutting and stitching.

Look on the bright side: If we bring liquor smuggling and rum running back, then we're going to produce a new generation of Kennedys! The current ones turned weird on us.🤔

And we'll get some more Al Capones! OK, I admit, that'll be painful for NYC and CHI, but in 30 years we'll get new rap artists!
