Today, I went to an open AA meeting with my brother, David. I don’t know if I’ve ever witnessed something more beautiful in my entire life.

In so many ways it is what the Church ought to be.

Welcoming, kind, honest, gracious, and authentic. This was no cheap grace either. I am still processing.

Is it weird to be a writer when you have no inner monologue? 🤔

Cuz I’ve always thought the whole “hearing a character’s thoughts” in novels and movies was a narrative device. Not an actual thing ppl hear?

in reply to Victoria Song

I am not a writer, but I don't "get" characters who have an inner narrator in the books I read.
in reply to Victoria Song

The idea of an inner monologue seems so weird to me. I have the thing that I’m thinking, and that’s about it.
I also have aphantasia, so no pictures or sounds in here either.
I write a lot (technical writing) but not sure how an inner monologue would help, but I’m also not really clear on what it actually is. The descriptions feel like they are making it up as a joke.

Top Democrat Schumer backs Republican spending bill to avert shutdown bbc.com/news/articles/cdx2j8n7…
There is a double-stranded in America. If there is a shutdown, while Democrats run the government, people claim they're lacking leadership. If there is a shutdown, when Republicans run the government, people claim Democrats are preventing government from functioning.

This double-standard allow Republicans to get away with anything, while Democrats are blamed for everything, including when trying to help the people.

I'm proud to share a research article our research team recently published. It examines health insurance and non-medical challenges Vietnamese Americans faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Disaggregating data unmasks disparities within different populations. We wouldn't see this if we included this group within the broader Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander umbrella.

The first step to suppressing dissent is to instill fear. Make an example of someone. Someone visible. Someone vocal. Someone whose punishment will send a ripple of terror through the ranks of those who dare to think, to organize, to speak. Mahmoud Khalil is that someone.

A thread: 🧵

in reply to The Index

This is the line in the sand. Crackdowns do not end with one case; they metastasize, emboldening those in power to stretch the limits of what the public will tolerate. Every equivocation, every glance away, permits the machinery of state violence to keep turning.
in reply to The Index

There is no neutral ground. Either people stand against this or watch it grow, knowing full well that it will come for more and more of them next.

Because it was time, I have -- finally! -- created a FAQ for the church, to answer most of the questions that come up whenever I mention that indeed, I own a church. The FAQ also has lots of pictures so you can see what it looks like now. Check it out:

New York needs to get rid of Schumer. i will never forgive him for helping Rupert Murdoch get citizenship and change media laws so he could take that Saudi money he’s always had access to, and buy up newspapers, radio & tv stations.

Schumer helped create a FOXNews world while he was still a Congressman. it’s exactly the kind of corruptocrat move that got him bumped up to senior US senator ―a post that actually runs longer than POTUS. senior US senators get elected for 6 years.

I agree. One thing 2025 has proven, Schumer’s gotta go. I wish I still lived in NY so I could vote against him.

I never ever thought I could develop such a uhh.. "dislike" against the US (gov)..

In the past i've always defended it and living there was my dream but it's all ruined by a hand full of people

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Americans here on the Fedi and I only want the best for you

But with all that's happening right now in the United States, it's no longer a local issue but a global

Big time..

We need to unite together to fight the fascist overtake, I don't see what else we can do

in reply to stux⚡

I don’t think the international community can trust the US government again for a long time. Even if Democrats get back in, what’s to stop Republicans from getting back in later and doing all this all over? Democrats have had chances to fix Citizens United and other causes of Republican rot. But didn’t. So why would they start now? That means a long stretch of very unstable behavior no matter who takes control. Don’t trust us. Make a better world yourselves and leave us behind.

Welp.

“Schumer privately told fellow Dems that he would help advance a House GOP funding bill — a strong indication that Senate Democrats will ultimately back down from forcing a government shutdown.”

The events of the last 24 hours made that impossible. He had to put his cards on the table. Very very hard to ever forget that happened. As I said, there's still a chance the tide cld shift here again. I wonder how much the level of voter anger of this will register over the next 18 hours.

I recently read an analogy that characterized Trump and the Republicans as the Uvalde shooter, and the Democrats as the police outside the schoolhouse. Seems fitting to me.

Our provincial liquor stores buy on consignment (the store doesn’t pay until the goods are sold). They have pulled all US liquor off shelves and are returning to sender.

Chuck Schumer is the XKE in McCarthy of Mitch McConnells.

Wait, scratch that. Mitch was actually effective.

This just in: Bernie says on MSNBC that Chuck refuses to block the Republican “Kill America/Elon Musk Empiwerment Act” aka SS/Medicaid cutting Continuing Resolution.

During the Vietnam War, Pierre Trudeau famously welcomed American draft dodgers and conscientious objectors to Canada. It created many (unique!) communities in this country that continue to be unique and valuable to this day.

Should Canada actively welcome American immigrants/refugees, or is it different this time?

Was looking forward to reading this article by @bemyeyes and, lo and behold, there is no heading markup for the title, no landmarks, no nothing to make it easy to get to the actual article. The first heading is some bottom menu thing and the only landmark is the navigation bar. Come on, guys. Your company literally exists to help with accessibility. Headings are as basic as it gets, at least for screenreader users.Do better.

I certainly don’t want to bury my head in the sand and I’m very aware how horrible things are, but dear *lord* if I ever need to fill up my anxiety meter all I need to do is open BlueSky for 3 minutes.

TLDR: I still love you #fediverse.

in reply to Operation: Puppet (he/him)

I only lasted one week on BlueSky. It had all performative nonsense of the bird site. Blocking is their version of dunk-tweeting, which still amplifies the voices I want to ignore. I'm much happier here in the #fediverse

Non-Americans abroad: Don’t come here, for any reason, until Trump is deposed. IT’S NOT SAFE. REPEAT, IT’S NOT SAFE.

Conference organizers: If it’s an international conference, don’t host it here. IT’S NOT SAFE. REPEAT, IT’S NOT SAFE. If it’s a domestic conference, don’t schedule it in a red state. IT’S NOT SAFE. FFS, IT’S NOT SAFE, DON’T DO IT.

What are your thoughts on these for hosting?

1. orangewebsite.com
2. libertyvps.net
3. eurovps.com
4. icyevolution.com

in reply to Retro Tech Shop

They're all resellers, two of them hide themselves behind Cloudflare, and one of them is surprisingly hosted in the United States, itself (Euro VPS, actually, which I find funny).

Here are two (2) sites I use to track down sites

1) whoishostingthis.com2) search.censys.io
I avoid resellers, because you'd have to worry about both the company you're dealing with, plus their parent company. I have seen what happens when they end up conflicting.

NASA is arguably the most successful part of US soft power diplomacy.

Not just thanks to flying humans to orbit & on to the Moon: its achievements in exploring the solar system & wider universe, & monitoring Earth & our environment are legion & admired worldwide.

So, if true, rumours predicting huge cuts to NASA science & gutting HQ would be a monumental act of sabotage only to primp the ego of one ignorant narcissist & to place US space ambitions narrowly & privately in the hands of another.

in reply to Mark McCaughrean

@apLundell@timeloop.cafe I agree but also a huge part of NASA's budget goes to Isaeli tech companies so on the plus side there's less genocide funding

LGBTQI+ people aren't welcome on my account. No one is welcome on my account. I'm not even welcome on my account. I strive to be as esoteric, abrasive, and stupid as possible to everyone, so I wouldn't want LGBTQI+ people to feel any different. I'm an acquired taste.

For that matter, non-people too. I will be equally obscure to furries, therians, plural systems of robots, whatever (I'm sorry, I'm old and I don't know all the different things, but it doesn't matter because you're all valid whether I know about you or not). You're all unwelcome here. I'm sorry, I don't make the rules.

However, fuck with my LGBTQI+ and/or non-people homies and I will gut you like I would gut a fish if I didn't like fish substantially more than I like human bigots. I will make you extremely unwelcome. There's a mat and everything.

@DanMorgan @talia_christine

lol morph

That’s the first time I’ve seen that word used for people that turned into what they already are

I’m not totally gonna go for that game because there is a difference however when someone is beholden to their donors they are beholden to their donors it’s not like there’s a real moral push behind it… There are still people that absolutely are different from Republicans even with corporate money but few and far between

'Bad idea': AOC warns Schumer and other Dems poised to make a 'tremendous mistake' - Raw Story

rawstory.com/alexandria-ocasio…

in reply to Sue Stone

i do not understand why AOC does not leave the Democrats and start her own party with Bernie. The same way Jeremy Corbyn and the non-genocidal classwar MPs in the UK should have left the Labour party. I think it is now a tactical mistake. If they can't hear now that people reject the traditional 2-party system, they'll never hear it and will never win.

#AOC #Corbyn #Democrats #Labour

in reply to sheislaurence

@sheislaurence We need a progressive/liberal option. Democrats today are far to the right of Republicans of just 30 years ago. The Republican/MAGA party is a fascist party. "Not the fascists" is not a winning strategy, but the Dems still insist on marching ever rightward.
