"Google refuses to deny it received encryption order from UK government"

The UK’s encryption-breaking order for a backdoor into iCloud isn’t a one-off.

The secret hearing happening RIGHT NOW is bigger than just Apple. If the government wins, our right to privacy and security falls.

Other services will be hit.

‘They goggled and gawped’: #Bahrain gives its pearl-divers a sci-fi wonder – and four ‘filo pastry’ car parks - theguardian.com/artanddesign/2… "The kingdom’s capital is a world heritage site – and it has now honoured its once-biggest industry with a ‘pearling path’ wending through two miles of architectural marvels. But did its car parks really have to be so lavish?" #architecture

Tutorial: Custom Toolbars
When you use any tool for a while you often build a more personal connection to it. Perhaps you have that old screwdriver in a drawer that’s become polished with years of use and fits your hand perfectly. In this tutorial we'll look at modifying existing toolbars and creating our own custom toolbars to personalise our #FreeCAD experience.

Far too many people in my industry still think we're somehow special and thus immune to what's happening to the rest of the labor world.

Grumpy because still sick and also getting stung by customs fees on a water descaler.

So here's some nice snowy plants from this morning.

The galanthus I saved from the concrete beam operation. Can't just drive your tractor over the first thing sprouting!

The blue spruce cuttings are hopefully sprouting roots. Want to propagate them as I have to fell the trees they're from.

Oops, I’m becoming a dactylonomy nerd!

I made a system where you can count to 50 by putting your thumb in different places. Hope you like base-seven!

in reply to Matthew Miller

Now that I think about it, this must be what Roman numerals represent — except using the thumb for 5 and 50

I, II, III, IIII — fingers
V — thumb
VI, VII, VIII, VIIII — fingers and thumb

X, XX, XXX, XXXX — fingers on other hand
L — that thumb
LX, LXX, LXXX, LXXXX — and so on

in reply to Matthew Miller

I've seen explanations of V being the full hand with thumb extended and X being arms crossed, but that doesn't really make any sense, because that's just an unnecessarily complicated way of counting to ten with ten fingers — why bother?

Apparently the Romans got the system from the Etruscans, and the actual origin is lost to time. But my idea makes sense!

Waybackify-WP.

I've finally cleaned up and posted something I've been using for a few years: wayback-wp.php is a script that you run from cron to replace any old links in your blog posts and comments with contemporaneous Wayback Machine URLs. I do this on all of my posts older than 5 years...

Curious How Trump’s Cost Cutting Could Affect Your National Park Visit? You Might Not Get a Straight Answer.

National Park Service staff have received talking points ordering them to describe layoffs as “workforce management actions” and to reassure visitors that changes resulting from the cuts won’t impede “memorable and meaningful experiences for all.”
