Fedi, I write to you today with worry. I'm beginning to think I've skipped down a dark, slippery slope that there is no escape from. I just finished my first piece of art containing a mousegirl.

I can only hope I'm strong enough to resist the inevitable slide into drawing tons of cute human/animal girl hybrids, but I doubt it.

Please provide your condolences below; or let me know if you like the piece :neocat_happy:

Y’all, one of my students brought Violinist Barbie* to their lesson this week, and we were laughing so much at how bad her posture is! There’s literally no way to get her to hold the bow correctly

*not actually Barbie?

in reply to Violinknitter

That's not even a viol bow hold - which would have been impressively niche, admittedly!

This is the way.

I mean, it’s a real and terrifying possibility that we don’t even have elections by the time Schumer is up for reelection. Things are moving fast, way too fast for electoral solutions.

But, if democracy in the US survives until future election cycles, we need to primary the hell out of the wavering half of the Democratic party. Take every one who’s been weak opposing Trump and primary them •hard•, then vote whoever’s more anti-fascist (however pathetically) in the general.

That’s down the road, heaven willing. Now: the phones, then the streets.

or, if the DNC isn't willing to do that, organize a new party in its place.
in reply to i.grok

@igrok In principle, in the decades-scale long term, sure. In the near future, it's just frantic sandbagging.
in reply to i.grok

@igrok It would take too long to get a new party going. The Dems are ripe for taking over.
in reply to Old Hippie Ⓥ Resistance!

@igrok
New party in the same body does seem like the more tractable and realistic path right now. Heck, Republicans pulled it off twice in living memory (once with Souther Strategy, once with the Tea Party).

Does anyone in here have any experience of electric cargo trikes? I'm looking at amcargobikes.co.uk/product/del… - does anyone have experience of this machine or have any comments or recommendations in general? It will be for transporting me and the small humans on short runs to and from school, and doing shopping/errands in town. Boosts appreciated for the breadth of advice.

in reply to Andrew Lewis Workshop

I've got just shy of 4000 km on mine. I'd recommend against a trike, as they handle so poorly, and cargo bikes actually can be fun to ride! (...just don't expect it to make any tight turns.) That one has a hub motor, which can be okay, but mid-drive will usually give you a better pedal assist experience. The price on that one is low enough to make me a bit suspicious. I'd check out your local used market -- at least here in Seattle you could find a pretty nice used model that has barely been ridden at all for about that price.

But really, whatever you get, I bet you'll love it!

in reply to Matthew Dockrey

@attoparsec I agree, that price is very low. I'd expect that as a lower end for a non electric bike. A roughly comparable Christiana without motor seems to be around ~2200£ and a long John style bakfiets seems to be around ~3200£. And bakfiets in my experience is more in the mid to low end regards pricing. Tricycles also have a very different driving style compared to a normal bike. I'd always recommend to test drive and to look at different vendors and models.

I wish Pelosi had just hung up her hat after the ACA, a fine place to rest on one’s laurels and pass the torch.

Whole lot of missed opportunities for sure. And ample blame to go around. But for now, we’re fighting a fire and I’ll just take the help of anybody who’s bringing water.

Some context on this from @jeffjarvis:

One of the purposes of these on-again-off-again waffling tariffs, as well as the chaotic slash-and-burn nonsense of “DOGE,” is to create both damage to businesses •and• the possibility of exemptions, so that the Trump admin can squeeze them.

It’s basically a mafia protection money racket: “Nice business you got there, shame if it got tariffed.”

So yes, I expect direct harm to corporate allies of Trump, and I also expect too-convenient carve-outs. Both. mastodon.social/@jeffjarvis/11…

in reply to Paul Cantrell

but does that actually work? Even if Tesla gets a carve out, its suppliers won’t. I’m sure they use many standard components.
in reply to 🔏 Matthias Wiesmann

@thias It doesn’t work •well•. But all they need is a sort of “your windows will on average be smashed slightly less than your competitors” belief on the part of businesses — not even a fact, just a vibe — for it to work.

So remember how a few days ago I shared this official Starlink document that just casually mentions that they found a piece of a Starlink satellite on a farm in Saskatchewan? starlink.com/public-files/Star…

I had really convinced myself it must be some kind of chatgpt gobbledygook. But... a reliable source confirmed that this really happened.

in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

SpaceX dropped potentially lethal debris from TWO DIFFERENT SPACECRAFT onto Saskatchewan within 6 months. And as far as I can tell, they just waltzed in and picked up the second piece without anyone official knowing about it. This is a very big problem for a lot of obvious legal reasons.

It mostly terrifies me because there are 7,000 Starlinks, and if each one leaves behind debris after demise, that's... a lot.

How is it is that the word 'Web' does not show up in this article? Facebook still has web access, so they still need to police that, as it is not an app. I have to assume that Meta is also thinking of getting rid of its remaining 'web' products, or at least tying them to having an app, as they do with whatsapp and instagram.
